The pleural space is modeled in two dimensions as a thin layer of fluid separating a deformable membrane and a rigid surface containing a bump. We computed the steady-state membrane configuration and fluid pressure distribution during relative sliding of the two surfaces. For physiologically relevant values of membrane tension, shear flow-induced pressures near the bump and far-field pressure gradients are similar to those measured in vivo within the pleural space (e.g. Lai-Fook et al.) [J. Appl. Physiol.: Respirat. Environ. Exercise Physiol. 56 (1984) 1633-1639]. Deformation of the membrane over the bump suggests that the pressure field generated by the sliding motion promotes an even layer of fluid in the pleural space, preventing asperities from touching. Results also suggest a possible mechanism for pleural fluid redistribution during breathing, whereby irreversible fluid motion is associated with the deformability of the membrane. 相似文献

To examine effects of lung motion on the separation of pleural surfaces during breathing, we modeled the pleural space in two dimensions as a thin layer of fluid separating a stationary elastic solid and a sliding flat solid surface. The undeformed elastic solid contained a series of bumps, to represent tissue surface features, introducing unevenness in fluid layer thickness. We computed the extent of deformation of the solid as a function of sliding velocity, solid elastic modulus, and bump geometry (wavelength and amplitude). For physiological values of the parameters, significant deformation occurs (i.e. bumps are 'flattened') promoting less variation in fluid thickness and decreased fluid shear stress. In addition, deformation is persistent; bumps of sufficient wavelength, once deformed, require a recovery time longer than a typical breath-to-breath interval to return near their undeformed configuration. These results suggest that in the pleural space during normal breathing, separation of pleural surfaces is promoted by the reciprocating sliding of lung and chest wall. 相似文献

To reconstruct the evolutionary dynamics of the 2019 novel-coronavirus recently causing an outbreak in Wuhan, China, 52 SARS-CoV-2 genomes available on 4 February 2020 at Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data were analyzed. The two models used to estimate the reproduction number (coalescent-based exponential growth and a birth-death skyline method) indicated an estimated mean evolutionary rate of 7.8 × 10−4 subs/site/year (range, 1.1 × 10−4-15 × 10−4) and a mean tMRCA of the tree root of 73 days. The estimated R value was 2.6 (range, 2.1-5.1), and increased from 0.8 to 2.4 in December 2019. The estimated mean doubling time of the epidemic was between 3.6 and 4.1 days. This study proves the usefulness of phylogeny in supporting the surveillance of emerging new infections even as the epidemic is growing. 相似文献

Nine young infants were followed longitudinally from 4 to 15 months of age. We recorded early spontaneous movements and reaching movements to a stationary target. Time-position data of the hand (endpoint), shoulder, and elbow were collected using an optoelectronic measurement system (ELITE). We analyzed the endpoint kinematics and the intersegmental dynamics of the shoulder and elbow joint to investigate how changes in proximal torque control determined the development of hand trajectory formation. Two developmental phases of hand trajectory formation were identified: a first phase of rapid improvements between 16 and 24 weeks of age, the time of reaching onset for all infants. During that time period the number of movement units per reach and movement time decreased dramatically. In a second phase (28–64 weeks), a period of fine-tuning of the sensorimotor system, we saw slower, more gradual changes in the endpoint kinematics. The analysis of the underlying intersegmental joint torques revealed the following results: first, the range of muscular and motiondependent torques (relative to body weight) did not change significantly with age. That is, early reaching was not confined by limitations in producing task-adequate levels of muscular torque. Second, improvements in the endpoint kinematics were not accomplished by minimizing amplitude of muscle and reactive torques. Third, the relative timing of muscular and motion-dependent torque peaks showed a systematic development toward an adult timing profile with increasing age. In conclusion, the development toward invariant characteristics of the hand trajectory is mirrored by concurrent changes in the control of joint forces. The acquisition of stable patterns of intersegmental coordination is not achieved by simply regulating force amplitude, but more so by modulating the correct timing of joint force production and by the system's use of reactive forces. Our findings support the view that development of reaching is a process of unsupervised learning with no external or innate teacher prescribing the desired kinematics or kinetics of the movement. 相似文献

In decerebrate cats, rotation about the longitudinal axis of the animal, leading to sinusoidal stimulation of labyrinth receptors, produces a tonic contraction of limb extensors during side-down tilt ( responses) and of dorsal neck extensors during side-up tilt ( responses). These changes in posture are mediated, at least in part, by lateral vestibular nucleus (LVN) neurons, with response characteristics to stimulation of macular and/or canal receptors that have so far been evaluated at the level of either unidentified vestibulospinal (VS) neurons or vestibulo-collic neurons projecting to the upper cervical cord. In the present study we investigated the dynamics of the responses of VS neurons projecting to the lumbosacral segments of the spinal cord to increasing frequencies of tilt (from 0.026 to 0.32 Hz, ±10°). All the recorded units showed an average phase lead with respect to position of +25.6±5.5° (SE) at the tilt frequency of 0.026 Hz. Most of these neurons (n=32) were particularly activated during side-down tilt ( responses) and showed either a stable phase or an increase in phase lead of the responses with increasing frequency of tilt. At the tilt frequency of 0.026 Hz, the smaller the phase lead of the responses, the larger was the response gain. Moreover, the smaller the phase lead of the responses at that frequency of tilt, the smaller the increase in gain but the larger was the increase in lead of the responses obtained by increasing the stimulation frequency up to 0.32 Hz. Through this set of finely organized changes in unit response characteristics, the overall output of this population of neurons increased, while the phase angle of the responses reached the mean value of +64.9±2.6° (SE), thus becoming more related to the velocity than to the positional signal. The remaining units (n=7), which were mainly activated during side-up tilt ( responses), displayed an increase in phase lag of the responses to increasing frequency of stimulation, which reached the mean value of-118.9±14.5° (SE) at 0.32 Hz. The differences in the dynamic properties of these VS neurons projecting to the lumbosacral cord, with respect to those of previously recorded populations of VS neurons, are discussed. 相似文献

Summary: The complex dynamics of poly(n‐alkyl methacrylates) is studied by advanced 13C NMR spectroscopy as well as mechanical and dielectric relaxation. Extended backbone conformations are identified as the molecular units involved in structural relaxation. From the variation in the degree of polymerization and a comparison with the presence of stereoregular sequences in the sample, the length of the extended units is determined to involve about five, at most ten monomeric units. Syndiotactic and isotactic sequences behave similarly. These findings are indicative of locally structured polymer melts.
