The "random burst" theory has recently been proposed as an explanation of the pattern of periodontal disease progression. The theory predicts that the progression of bone loss at individual sites is not dependent upon previous bone loss and age. A longitudinal radiographic study was designed to test this hypothesis, and to describe the changes in bone level over 2 years in a group of 180 subjects (18-68 years of age) who were not under systematic periodontal treatment. The results indicated that 94% of the sites did not show significant changes in the alveolar bone level during the observation period. The mean annual bone loss for the total population was 0.11 mm. By regressing longitudinal bone loss upon age, it was shown that the rate of bone loss increased rapidly between 33 and 56 years of age while a different pattern was shown for the age intervals 18-32 and 57-68 years. Also, the rate of bone loss increased with increasing initial bone loss. This was less evident in the oldest age group. It was concluded that the progression of bone loss in the present material is consistent with a "burst" theory. The role of maternal weight loss and surgery to conception interval is unclear.ObjectivesTo investigate the effect of maternal weight loss, as a result of bariatric surgery, and surgery to conception interval on fetal growth and birthweight (BW).SettingInner London Teaching HospitalMethodsWe studied prospectively nulliparous women with previous bariatric surgery. Information on type, time, and presurgery weight was obtained. Surgery-to-conception interval was calculated as the time between surgery and conception, defined as the fourteenth day of the pregnancy dated by first trimester ultrasound scan. In the first trimester, maternal weight was measured. Assessment of maternal weight change between presurgery and first trimester of pregnancy was defined as total weight loss (TWL) (%). Fetal ultrasound scans were performed twice; 30–32 and 35–37 weeks’ gestation and estimated fetal weight (EFW) was calculated. Fetal growth rate was calculated as the ratio of EFW increase (in grams) between 30–32 and 35–37 weeks divided by the time interval (in days) between the 2 examinations. BW was recorded.ResultsThe study included 54 pregnant women, 26 with a restrictive procedure (gastric band or vertical sleeve gastrectomy) and 28 with a gastric bypass. Surgery to conception interval was not a significant predictor of the offspring’s growth. Maternal TWL was a significant predictor of fetal growth rate (P = .04) and predictor of BW (P = .005), even after adjustment for confounders.ConclusionsMaternal weight loss, as a result of bariatric surgery, has an inverse correlation with fetal growth rate and BW. 相似文献

This study reports that zn-1, a monoclonal antibody, labels hair cells but not supporting cells in the inner ear and the lateral line of the axolotl salamander, Ambystoma mexicanum. Zn-1 immunocytochemically labels the cytoplasm and stereocilia of mature hair cells in the sacculus, in the utriculus, and in the mechanoreceptive neuromast organs of the lateral line. Lower levels of labeling mark newly formed hair cells in the periphery of the sacculus and in regenerating neuromasts. Zn-1 also selectively labels neuronal processes and perikarya in the lateral line nerves and ganglia and the VIIIth cranial nerve and ganglion. Processes and perikarya are labeled by zn-1 in the dorsolateral medulla oblongata, at sites of termination of the afferent octaval and lateral line neurons. Western blot analysis revealed that zn-1 labels one or more proteins with molecular weights of 80 and 160 kDa. The identity of these protein bands remains to be determined. The presence of a specific epitope expressed in both hair cells and neurons, but not in supporting cells, in the vestibular and auditory epithelia of the ear and in the mechanoreceptive neuromasts of the lateral line suggests shared cytogenetic heritages. These findings are consistent with a close evolutionary relationship between otic and lateral line senses, such as that inherent to the theoretical evolutionary scheme outlined in van Bergeijk's "acousticolateralis hypothesis." The protein recognized by zn-1 is as yet unidentified, but its conservative evolution suggests that it may serve an important function in the statoacoustic and lateral line systems. 相似文献

It has been suggested that the renal functional reserve (RFR) defined by the rise in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) after a protein load could disappear in patients with severe nephron loss but with a normal GFR. This study compared, in 17 children, inulin clearance (C
in) measured by the plasma inulin plateau at the end of two 14-day randomized periods differing in protein intake: 100% (low protein, LP), or 200% (high protein, HP) of recommended dictary allowances (RDA). Diets were aimed at maintaining food habits and energy intake. Compliance was assessed by records of the last 3–4 days, an interview with the dietician and by urinary nitrogen measurements. Mean actual protein intake was 109% (56%–139%) RDA for the LP period and 220% (163%–319%) RDA for the HP period.C
in did not change in 14 children with GFR below (n=7) or within (n=7) the normal range.C
in was higher in the HP period than in the LP period (+32, 50, 63%) in 3 children who had a 50% (single kidneys) or a 25% (sclerosed glomeruli) nephron loss. Non-responding children had a GFR below 105 ml/min per 1.73 m2. Nephron loss (70% sclerosed glomeruli) was estimated in only 1 child with no RFR. The results suggest that GFR measurement after prolonged dietary stimulation could help in evaluating the severity of nephron loss in children with normal or borderline GFR. We studied a Dutch family with DFNA2-linked progressive sensorineural hearing impairment (SNHI). Recent audiograms were obtained
from 18 of the affected persons (age 7–81 years) and were used in a gene-linkage analysis. Linear regression analysis of the
audiograms, using binaural mean thresholds, disclosed on average a descending slope of approximately 10 dB/octave at any age
and an annual threshold increase at any frequency of about 0.7 dB/year. There may have been substantial congenital impairment
at higher frequencies, but longitudinal analysis of hearing impairment in the youngest case, who was followed from age 5 years,
suggested that the most significant changes in hearing may have occurred in the first two decades of life. Linkage analysis
was carried out with special attention to the DFNA2 region because hearing trends were very similar to families previously
linked to DFNA2. Linkage to DFNA2 was established with maximum lod scores of 4.7 and 3.2 for the flanking markers of the DFNA2
region (D1S432;MYCL1).
