Twenty persons sipped and judged overall perceived magnitude, odor magnitude, and taste magnitude of various concentrations of the odorant citral, the tastants sodium chloride and sucrose, and odorant-tastant combinations. In a second experiment, the same twenty persons sniffed and judged perceived odor magnitude for the same set of stimuli. The investigation probed two primary questions: Does the apparent harmony of an olfactory-taste mixture dictate the degree of additivity in that mixture? Does harmony of the components influence the production of any taste-smell confusion? The data from both the harmonious mixture (citral and sucrose) and the dissonant mixture (citral and NaCl) imply absence of sensory inhibition or facilitation between taste and olfaction. Nevertheless, both types of mixtures led to substantial taste-smell confusion whereby olfactory stimulation evoked sensations of taste.  相似文献

Adult male and female Wistar rats maintained on ad lib diet were given a choice between tap water and a solution of glucose in the concentration of either 5 or 12%. Both sexes exhibited a marked preference for glucose solutions. With the 5% solution the volume intake was similar in both sexes and the total calorie intake was normal. With the 12% solution the volume intake was higher in females than in males, while in both sexes the total calorie intake was increased to a similar (maximum acceptable) level. Treatment with Protamine Zinc Insulin (PZI) in a daily dose of 40 U/kg b.w. markedly increased the intake of the 5% solution in both sexes, but significantly more in females than in males, thus revealing sex differences which were not manifest in untreated rats. PZI treatment had little effect on 12% glucose solution intake, presumably because with this solution the total calorie intake was increased to a maximum already in untreated rats.  相似文献

Broiler chicks were provided choices of synthetic diets (a) adequate or low in lysine, and (b) adequate in or devoid of lysine. In each case, chicks consumed some of each diet offered, but preference was shown for the adequate lysine diet. Growth rates of chicks given choices ranged from 80% of that of chicks fed an adequate lysine diet with no choice for two weeks, then growth rates fell to about 60% of those fed adequate lysine. In another study, chicks were fed a diet devoid of lysine but were offered pure L-lysine HCl in a separate feeder. These chicks selected some of the supplementary lysine, but their body weights were only 68% of the body weight of chicks fed an adequate lysine diet after 21 days. Chicks given a choice of diets prepared with an adequate quantity of either L- or D-lysine preferred with L-lysine diet but did not select sufficient quantity to reach normal growth. These observations indicate that chicks can discern the presence of L-lysine in diets or separately, but will not select sufficient quantity for maximum growth potential. A diet prepared with D-lysine was more acceptable than one completely devoid of lysine, suggesting some sensory recognition for lysine.  相似文献

Behavioral indices of taste discrimination have been used to study gustatory physiology and psychophysics though they are often biased by taste and position preferences and offer limited stimulus control. In the present experiment five rats were trained to discriminate distilled water from 0.9% NaCl using a discretetrials go-no go procedure. When two rats were further trained on a series of 0.1% saccharin/NaCl discrimination reversals, correct responding occurred more rapidly following saccharin presentations independent of its stimulus property (SD or SΔ). The results are discussed in the context of experimental methods and the usefulness of the present technique for studies of gustatory physiology.  相似文献

In the present study, electrical stimulation of medical or laternal septal areas and total or restricted lesions of these were conducted to observe the effect on ingestion of primary taste solutions in a free-choice situation. Stimulation induced a specific decrease in the intake of NaCl solution and had no effect on saccharin, acetic acid and quinine solutions and water. Total septal lesion or restricted lesions of medial or lateral septal areas induced hyperdipsia in rats. The lesioned rats, in a free-choice situation preferred NaCl, saccharin, as well as acetic acid solutions. This increase in acetic acid intake after lesion suggests that sour taste is also affected. Furthermore, there was no consumption of quinine solution before and after the lesion. This might be due to the presence of sweet tasting saccharin solution in this free-choice situation. These results indicate that the septal area causes aversion to NaCl intake, probably by inhibiting lateral hypothalamic neurons responsible for NaCl ingestion. The consumption of large quantities of saccharin, NaCl and acetic acid after the septal lesion suggests that the rats become overresponsive to taste factors in a free-choice situation.  相似文献

Summary A total of 311 units, responsive to natural stimulation of the oral cavity, were isolated from the rostral part of the solitary tract nucleus (NTS) of rats. Of these, 169 taste neurons, activated by taste stimulation, and 142 mechanoreceptive units, exclusively sensitive to mechanical stimulation of the oral cavity, were found. Most taste units (62.3%) were also excited by mechanical stimulation. Forty-three (34.1%) of the 126 taste units examined were identified as solitario-parabrachial relay (SP) neurons by antidromic stimulation from the ipsilateral dorsal pons, while only eleven (12.6%) of the 87 mechanoreceptive units were SP neurons. Taste SP neurons could be divided into two subgroups according to their antidromic latency; the fast SP units with an antidromic latency shorter than 9 ms and slow SP units with a longer antidromic latency. These two subgroups were not differentiated in any physiological properties except that the fast SP neurons were frequently excited by sucrose. Taste neurons were classified according to the best stimulus of the four basic taste solutions to produce the largest number of discharges in each neuron. All types of taste neurons were found among the SP and non-SP neurons, but only a small number of quinine-best neurons (n = 2) were found in the SP neuron group compared to the number of quinine-best neurons in the non-SP neuron group (n = 10). A histological examination of the recording sites revealed that taste relay neurons were found at the central or dorsal part of the nucleus but mechanoreceptive relay neurons were found at the peripheral part, although relay and non-relay neurons of either class were intermingled in the nucleus.Supported by a Grant from the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of Japan (No. 58106008)  相似文献

Recent evidence suggests that kappa opiate receptors may play a key role in the regulation of appetite. Such evidence implies that kappa receptors might be localized within specific brain areas known to regulate ingestive behaviors. On the basis of this implication we employed an in vitro film autoradiographic technique using 3H-ethylketocyclazozine as ligand to identify putative kappa receptors within CNS "taste" nuclei and surrounding areas. Coronal cryostat sections of rat brain were incubated with ligand in the presence of D-Ala2, D-Leu5-enkephalin (DADLE) and morphine, apposed to LKB Ultrofilm for 60 days, processed and kappa receptor densities evaluated with the aid of a hand held photometer and video image analyzer. Highest kappa receptor densities were found within various gustatory and feeding sites including the rostral pole of the nucleus of the solitary tract, parabrachial nuclei, ventral posterior and medial portions of the thalamus, medial hypothalamus, medial nuclei of the amygdala and bed nucleus of the stria terminalis. Various other midline and medial limbic areas also showed significant kappa densities.  相似文献

Adult male hooded rats with parasagittal knife-cuts between the amygdala and temporal cortex (n = 8), with electrolytic basolateral amygdala lesions (n = 8), and sham-operated controls (n = 8), were tested for neophobia and LiCl-induced aversion to a 0.1% saccharin solution in a one-bottle forced choice paradigm. Both types of lesion produced equal deficits in neophobia and conditioned aversion. It was concluded that severing the connections between the amygdala and the temporal cortex produces the same deficits as basolateral amygdala damage. Possible anatomical substrates for these effects are discussed.  相似文献

In rodents, gustatory information is transmitted from second order neurons in the rostral nucleus of the solitary tract (rNST) to the parabrachial nucleus (PBN) in the pons. The chemical nature of this projection is unknown. Therefore, the goal of the current study was to determine if rNST neurons that project to the PBN express glutamate-like immunoreactivity. Projection neurons were retrogradely labeled following stereotaxic injection of rhodamine-filled latex microspheres into the right PBN of seven rats while glutamate-immunoreactive (GLU-IR) structures were visualized in the same tissue using an immunoperoxidase procedure. The number of single- and double-labeled neurons located in the right (ipsilateral) and left rNST, in each of the nuclear subdivisions as well as their position along the rostral-caudal axis of the rNST was determined. GLU-IR cell bodies were located throughout the rNST. Although the rostral central subdivision contained the highest percentage (33.8%) of GLU-IR perikarya, immunolabeled neurons were most concentrated (number/area of subdivision) within the medial subnucleus. The rostral third of the rNST contained the fewest (20. 5%) and lowest density of GLU-IR cell bodies. The highest percentage of rNST neurons retrogradely labeled from the PBN were located ipsilateral (85.4%) to the pontine injection site, in the middle third of the nucleus (44.2%) and within the rostral central subdivision (52.4%). Overall, 18% of the labeled rNST projection neurons were GLU-IR. The distribution of double-labeled neurons mirrored that of the projection neurons with the largest number located in the ipsilateral rNST (84.5%), middle third of the nucleus (40.5%) and rostral central subdivision (64.7%). These results indicate that glutamate may be a main component of the ascending pathway from the rNST to the PBN. In addition, since GLU-IR neurons were located throughout the rNST and most were not retrogradely-labeled, the current results suggest that glutamate may be an important neurotrans-mitter within the medulla.  相似文献
