When Following the Rules Feels Wrong

The Covid‐19 pandemic has created a clinical environment in which health care practitioners are experiencing moral distress in numerous and novel ways. In this narrative reflection, a pediatric palliative care physician explores how his hospital's strict visitation policy set the stage for moral distress when, in the early months of the pandemic, it prevented two parents from being together at the bedside of their dying child.     

Careography: Staff Experiences of Navigating Decisions in Neonatology in Denmark

In this article, we explore medical doctors’ moral experiences of being responsible for decisions on the lives and sometimes deaths of infants in a Danish Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Drawing on fieldwork, we investigate how clinicians navigate the tension between exercising medical authority and enabling parental involvement in decisions. Introducing the term “careography”, we call attention to how the doctors steer this tension through care for the infant, parents, colleagues, and society in ways that help them overcome moral ambivalences. We suggest that “careography” holds analytical potential to bridge anthropological theories of power, experience, and care.     

Moral Fiber: Breakfast as a Symbol of ‘a Good Start’ in an Australian Obesity Intervention

What are the symbolic meanings of breakfast in the context of one of Australia’s largest childhood obesity intervention programs? Utilizing a range of theoretical insights into the morality of food and eating and the anthropology of food, we trace how breakfast is packaged and promoted to families in an Australian community as a ‘healthy start’ to the day. Through ethnographic and historic investigation, we argue that eating breakfast and certain types of breakfast foods are symbolic of a classed, healthy lifestyle pattern, embodying parental knowledge and bodily regulation to routinely structure daily life. In communities where poverty and unemployment are harsh realities, well-intentioned programs that encourage people to eat a healthy breakfast are encoded with an assemblage of moral values—of knowledge, foods, families, and times and spaces—that are often difficult to reconcile with the wider sociocultural context in which many people live.

Nursing curriculums strive to prepare students for their role as a professional nurse. Nursing ethics should continue to play a vital role in educating future nurses. Moral courage is one of many important virtues nurse educators should impart on students prior to entering the profession. By using theoretical frameworks and innovative strategies involving moral dilemmas, nurse educators may be better able to foster this complex characteristic in nursing students.

Bricolage in action: learning about,making sense of,and discussing,issues about genetically modified crops and food

Making sense of new technologies and their associated risks entails lay people in utilizing various modes of reasoning and making use of a range of interpretative resources at hand to interrogate evidence. Such sense making is accomplished collectively in ways that are sometimes playfully inventive, and which have regard to ideas of accountability and morally acceptability. In practice, such bricolage-like processes appear to have certain similarities with the work of everyday scientific investigation. This paper examines these processes of lay practical reasoning by adopting an analytic stance that is concerned with examining the fine detail of what people demonstrably do in accomplishing such work. It draws on data generated by number of reconvened discussion groups, which formed a component part of the recent public debate in the UK about the possible commercialization of genetically modified crops.
