The paucity of adequate data on dietary and nutrient intakes of school-age children is a barrier to addressing malnutrition and associated risks in Nigeria. This study included 955 children aged 4–13 years from Ibadan, Nigeria, using a stratified random sampling design. Information on family socio-demographic characteristics was reported, and child anthropometrics were measured. Dietary intake data were collected using a multi-pass 24 h dietary recall method; 20% of subjects completed a second 24 h recall to estimate usual nutrient intakes. Means and distributions of usual intakes of energy and nutrients as well as prevalence of inadequacy were estimated. Usual energy intake (kcal/day) was 1345 and 1590 for younger (4–8 years) and older (9–13 years) age groups, respectively. The macronutrient intakes of most children did not conform to Adequate Macronutrient Distribution Ranges (AMDRs), which were characterized by a higher proportion of energy from carbohydrates and lower proportion from total fats. Protein intake was largely within the AMDR. Compared to recommendations, over 60% of 4–8-year-old children had inadequate intakes of calcium, copper, iron, folate, and vitamins A, D, and E. There were more micronutrient inadequacies in the older children. This study identifies nutrition gaps and suggests future research and education to improve child nutrition in Nigeria. 相似文献

Maternal and infant nutrition are problematic in areas of Ethiopia. Health extension workers (HEWs) work in Ethiopia’s primary health care system, increasing potential health service coverage, particularly for women and children, providing an opportunity for health improvement. Their roles include improving maternal and infant nutrition, disease prevention, and health education. Supporting HEWs’ practice with ‘non-clinical’ skills in behavior change and health communication can improve effectiveness. This intervention study adapted and delivered a UK-developed training intervention for Health Extension Workers (HEWs) working with the United Nations World Food Programme in Ethiopia. The intervention included communication and behavioral training adapted with local contextual information. Mixed methods evaluation focused on participants’ reaction to training, knowledge, behavior change, and skills use. Overall, 98 HEWs were trained. The intervention was positively received by HEWs. Pre-post evaluations of communication and behavior change skills found a positive impact on HEW skills, knowledge, and motivation to use skills (all p < 0.001) to change women’s nutritional behavior, also demonstrated in role-play scenarios. The study offered substantial learning about intervention delivery. Appropriate cultural adaptation and careful consideration of assessment of psychological constructs are crucial for future delivery. 相似文献

BackgroundPsychological stress may influence health by negatively affecting dietary intake. However, there are few studies on the connection between stress and dietary intake in Puerto Rico (PR), a population with documented poor diet quality.ObjectiveTo explore the association between perceived stress and intake of macronutrients and diet quality among adults in PR.DesignCross-sectional data came from the Puerto Rico Assessment of Diet, Lifestyle, and Diseases study (2015).ParticipantsThis analysis included data from 238 adults (30-75 years old) in the San Juan metro area.Main outcome measuresDietary intake was measured with a food frequency questionnaire adapted and validated to the PR population. The Alternate Healthy Eating Index (AHEI) score was calculated to measure diet quality.Statistical analysesMultivariate linear models adjusted for sociodemographics, anthropometrics, behavioral factors, and social support were used to determine adjusted mean macronutrient intake and AHEI scores by perceived stress category.ResultsIn models adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics, high perceived stress was significantly associated with higher intake of total energy, added sugars, and saturated fats; lower intake of dietary fiber and vegetable protein; and lower AHEI score compared with low perceived stress (all P < .05). With further adjustment for lifestyle behaviors, central obesity, and social support, high perceived stress remained significantly associated with added sugars, saturated fats, and vegetable protein only.ConclusionsHigher perceived stress was associated with unhealthy dietary intake in adults residing in the San Juan area, PR. Future longitudinal studies with larger sample size are needed to build on these findings and to test the potential mediating and moderating roles of behavioral and social support factors in this population. 相似文献

BackgroundCurrent dietary guidelines recommend avoiding foods and beverages with added sugars and higher sodium before age 2 years.ObjectiveThe aim was to describe daily snack food intake (frequency and total energy) and the associations with overconsumed nutrients (added sugars, sodium, and saturated fats) and child weight-for-length z scores.DesignA cross-sectional, secondary analysis of baseline data from an ongoing longitudinal intervention was conducted.Participants and settingA sample of 141 caregivers with infants (aged 9 to 11 months) and toddlers (aged 12 to 15 months) was recruited in Buffalo, NY, between 2017 and 2019.Main outcome measuresThree 24-hour dietary recalls were used to categorize 'sweet and salty snack foods' or 'commercial baby snack foods' based on the US Department of Agriculture What We Eat in America food group classifications and estimate nutrient intakes. Child recumbent length and weight were measured by trained researchers.Statistical analysisDaily frequency (times/day), energy (kcal/day), and overconsumed nutrients from snack food intake were calculated. Multivariable regression models examined associations between the frequency of and energy from snack food intake with overconsumed nutrients and child weight-for-length z scores.ResultsInfants consumed snack foods on average 1.2 times/day contributing 5.6% of total daily energy, 19.6% of added sugars, and 6.8% of sodium. Toddlers consumed snack foods on average 1.4 times/day contributing 8.9% of total daily energy, 40.0% of added sugars, and 7.2% of sodium. In adjusted models including all children, greater frequency of sweet and salty snack food intake, but not commercial baby snack foods, was associated with higher weight-for-length z scores.ConclusionsSnack foods are frequently consumed by infants and toddlers and contribute to the intake of overconsumed nutrients such as added sugars and sodium. AbstractInformation on children’s diet including bioactive compounds is quite scarce. This observational study investigated the composition of the diet of children living in Parma (Italy; n?=?172, 8–10?years) using 3-day food records completed in winter and spring. Mean daily intakes of food groups, energy and nutrients were obtained using the national food database, while (poly)phenol contents were estimated from Phenol-Explorer or by specific literature searches. Food consumption, energy and nutrient intakes decreased in spring and were partially in line with national data. Adherence to the nutritional recommendations was not satisfied for the majority of nutrients. Main contributors to the phenolic intake were flavonoids (flavan-3-ols) and phenolic acids (hydroxycinnamic acids), while main dietary sources were fruit, chocolate-based products, vegetables, and tea & coffee (decaffeinated). This study provided the first comprehensive analysis of the nutritional composition of children’s diet. Future research should look at the health implications of dietary choices in children. 相似文献

Based on the fact that chemical products such as binding agents are produced by mixing three kinds of phosphates with different
ratios, we mixed metaphosphate, polyphosphate and pyrophosphate. Each was made to Na-phosphate, K-phosphate, and Ca-phosphate
and each was mixed with commercial feeds so that the content of P would be approximately 0.1, 0.15, 0.3, 0.4, 0.6 and 1.0%.
The prepared pellets were given to ICR, CF # 1 and AKR strains of mice at 29 days of age for 680 days and observations were
made through this experimental period at different stages. The observations were also carried out on the mice administered
with the experimental feeds for 1.5 months from 9 to 10.5 months of age. The observations were compared with those of the
control group at all times. As a result, plasma 1 α, 25 (OH)2 D3 and P levels were always significantly higher in the phosphate administered groups relative to the control. Urine P and Fe
increased while urine Ca decreased in the phosphate-treated groups.
The effect of phosphates on the bones was studied taking soft X-ray pictures of hind legs and applying microdensitometry to
them. Through these observations we recognized thinning of the cortex of bones, reduction of marrow trabecules and development
of osteophyte. Histological observations disclosed that changes in knee joint tissues were apparent; that is, a decrease in
or an irregular loss of the number of cells in superficial, intermediate, and radial strata of the joint cartilage, proliferation
of subchondral bone, and the development of osteophytes were noted. As for muscles, diameters of musclar fibers became smaller;
in particular, type II fibers showed greater shrinkage. Regarding kidneys, swelling and atrophy of glomerular capillaries,
proliferation of mesangial cells, nephroselerosis, swelling, thinning, and loss of tubular epithelium, interstitial tissue
inflammation, development of cylindruria, and deposition of calcium were observed. All these changes seem to be a particularly
advanced aspect of the changes which are more pronounced with increasing dose and age.
These changes were found even in the group administered with the feed containing 0.1% phosphorus, and, these changes were
dependent on the concentration level of P. It was observed that administration to older subjects for a short term (1.5 months)
produced effects stronger than those to younger subjects administered for a long term (10.5 months).
The effects of condensed Ca-phosphate on bones were similar to those of condensed Na- and K-phosphates, and, hence, it was
supposed that these effects were caused by phosphate radicals.

Background: This study explored eating habits, nutrient intake, and blood vitamin and mineral levels to determine whether
severely obese subjects (BMI 40-50 kg m−2) post-vertical banded gastroplasty (VBG) or gastric bypass Roux-en-Y (GBR) are at risk of developing compounded under-nutrition.
Methods: A dietary follow-up of 36 VBG and 19 GBR was maintained for 18 months via 7-day food intake diaries and 24-h recalls.
Food intake was analysed for energy and nutrient composition and for its relative amount to recommended dietary allowances
(RDA). Results: Weight loss was greatest during the first 6 months, continued at a slower rate for the next 6 months, nearly
ceasing thereafter. The results following GBR were not substantially different from those following VBG 18 months postoperatively.
The median weight loss at 1 year postoperatively was 48, 46, 48 and 36 kg; expressed as residual excess body weight: 0.2,
16, 13 and 22% for GBR Men, Women, VBG Men, Women, respectively. According to the classification proposed by Reinhold, all
subjects achieved excellent treatment outcomes 18 months postoperatively. Despite the relatively low reported energy intake
(20-50% below RDA), no correlation was found between rate of weight loss and energy intake at 6 months postoperatively. The
intake of most vitamins and minerals was below 50% of RDA during the 18 months follow-up. The increase in energy intake did
not improve the level of the nonenergy-contributing nutrients. Compliance to multivitamin and mineral supplement intake deteriorated
with time. Conclusion: The low to within-normal range of blood vitamin and mineral levels 12 months postoperatively suggests
the slow development of subclinical nutritional deficiency which could jeopardize the subjects' long-term health status. 相似文献
