Electrophysiological mapping criteria were employed to identify visual areas 20a, 20b, 21a, 21b, PMLS, AMLS, ALLS, PLLS, DLS, VLS, and PS in the cat, and to guide placement of tracer deposits. Anterograde tracer methods were used to study the corticostriatal projections of these extrastriate visual areas. The experiments demonstrate that all 11 extrastriate areas send projections to two distinct regions within the striatum, an extensive longitudinal zone within the caudate nucleus, and a more compact region within the posterolateral putamen. Cortical visual projections to the putamen terminate in relatively compact sheets or slabs, and appear to overlap extensively, while those to the caudate nucleus are irregularly patchy and more widely dispersed. Retrograde tracer deposits into the visual recipient zone of the caudate nucleus reveal substantial convergence of other cortical inputs to this same domain. Aspects of visuotopic organization are preserved in the visual projections to both the putamen and the caudate nucleus, but unequivocal retinotopic organization could not be inferred from the available material. Ten of the eleven extrastriate visual area also project topographically onto the visual zone of the claustrum. Area PS does not appear to contribute to the corticoclaustral projections. We have employed transneuronal transport to examine the anatomical relationships between the deep cerebellar nuclei and 2 cortical motor areas: the primary motor cortex and the arcuate premotor area (APA). In the same animals, we have also examined the patterns of labeling in the thalamus and the red nucleus to provide evidence for the potential routes of transneuronal transport to the cerebellum. When the appropriate technical procedures were employed, cortical injections of wheat germ agglutinin conjugated to horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) resulted in transneuronal labeling within portions of the contralateral deep cerebellar nuclei. Injections into the primary motor cortex labeled neurons in the dentate and in the 2 subdivisions of the interpositus. Injections into the APA labeled neurons in the dentate and in only the posterior subdivision of the interpositus. In most instances, dentate neurons were more intensely labeled following the cortical injections than interpositus neurons. The transneuronal labeling observed in the dentate nucleus was topographically organized. The dentate region that was labeled following injections into the "arm area" of the APA was caudal and ventral to the dentate region that was labeled following injections into the "arm area" of the primary motor cortex. This observation provides evidence for two "arm areas" in the dentate: one anatomically related to the APA, and the other related to the primary motor cortex. More than one route of transport may be responsible for the labeling of cerebellar neurons. We propose that the labeling observed in the dentate nucleus reflects the pattern of connections in the cerebellothalamocortical pathways that link the dentate with the cerebral cortex. Thus, our observations support the concept proposed by Schell and Strick (J. Neurosci. 4:539-560, '84)--that the cortical targets of the dentate nucleus include both the primary motor cortex and the APA.  相似文献

Cross-correlation functions were used to study the time delay (a measure of synchronization) in the appearance of epileptic discharges in distant areas of the cortex in the intact cortex and in neuronally isolated cortical strips in Wistar rats. Experiments were performed at different stages of axon sprouting 30 and 90 days after isolation of cortical areas and in intact cortex. Significant increases in the number of synapses in layer V of isolated cortical strips at 30 days correlated with significant decreases in the time delay, while decreases in the number of synapses at 90 days correlated with a significant increase in the time delay. This is evidence that newly formed synapses increase the extent of synchronization and thus affect epileptogenesis. The data obtained here suggest that large pyramidal cells in layer V of the rat neocortex form a neural network in pathological conditions, this supporting intracortical synchronization of epileptic discharges.  相似文献

Usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP), or idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, has been considered to be associated with a high risk for lung carcinoma. To investigate this well-known but still equivocal relationship, we reviewed the clinical features of UIP autopsy cases with or without lung carcinoma (n = 32 and 38, respectively), and compared the morphology and cell kinetics of metaplastic epithelia in the honeycombed areas (n = 11, each group). Thirty-two of 70 UIP autopsy cases showed lung carcinomas. Clinically, UIP with lung carcinoma showed a male predominance (P = 0.001), a higher rate of smoking history (P = 0.001) and a later onset of UIP (P = 0.02), compared with UIP without lung carcinoma. Most of the carcinomas were peripheral in origin (90%), and 65% were topographically associated with honeycombed areas or the border between honeycombing and non-fibrotic areas. Quantitative assessment of the metaplastic epithelia in the honeycombed areas revealed that squamous metaplasia, but not cuboidal cell metaplasia or bronchial cell metaplasia, occurred more frequently in UIP with lung carcinoma than in UIP without lung carcinoma (P = 0.02). There were no significant differences between the two groups with regard to the labeling indexes of Ki-67 and p53 in the metaplastic epithelia, including squamous metaplasia. The degree of atypical squamous metaplasia was not different between the two groups. The quantitative predominance of squamous metaplasia in the honeycombed areas may not be a precursor for lung carcinoma, but might reflect a constitutional susceptibility of UIP patients to develop a lung carcinoma.  相似文献

西部开发地区存在许多虫媒病 ,即昆虫和蜱螨传播的疾病 ,为了保障开发人群的健康 ,首先需要对这些疾病的传播 ,特别是有些疾病的自然疫源地或流行区有所了解。本文列述了 13种虫媒病及其在这个地区的分布 ,对其中值得我们更重视的 4类重要疾病 ,包括鼠疫、莱姆病、疟疾和登革热的病原体传播媒介或有的贮存宿主以及重要性等作了扼要的介绍。本文并提出了这类疾病在开发中和开发后可能产生的危害性 ,以及防止或减少它们危害的建议。作者认为从开发地区的长远利益出发 ,应该重视开发中自然环境改变对上述虫媒病传播影响的研究  相似文献

In human brain imaging studies, it is common practice to use the Talairach stereotaxic reference system for signifying the convergence of brain function and structure. In nearly all neuroimaging reports, the studied cortical areas are specified further with a Brodmann Area (BA) number. This specification is based upon macroscopic extrapolation from Brodmann’s projection maps into the Talairach atlas rather than upon a real microscopic cytoarchitectonic study. In this review we argue that such a specification of Brodmann area(s) via the Talairach atlas is not appropriate. Cytoarchitectonic studies reviewed in this paper show large interindividual differences in 3-D location of primary sensory cortical areas (visual cortex) as well as heteromodal associational areas (prefrontal cortical areas), even after correction for differences in brain size and shape. Thus, the simple use of Brodmann cortical areas derived from the Talairach atlas can lead to erroneous results in the specification of pertinent BA. This in turn can further lead to wrong hypotheses on brain system(s) involved in normal functions or in specific brain disorders. In addition, we will briefly discuss the different ‘Brodmann’ nomenclatures which are in use for the cerebral cortex.  相似文献

Summary The distribution of somatostatin (SRIF)-immunoreactive neurons in the visual cortical areas 17, 18 and 18a of Wistar rats from birth to adulthood was followed in both normal and dark-reared animals. The SRIF neurons show difference in distribution amongst the three cortical areas studied as early as the first postnatal week. Area 17 was distinguished by fewer SRIF cells in the upper layers (I–III), which results in a lower overall density. The SRIF neurons in all areas appeared to increase in numbers up to about 3 weeks and then decline dramatically to adult levels, which were 14–19% of the peak levels. Although this decline was still obvious, it moderated to 25–31% in dark-reared animals. The greatest effect was seen in area 18 where, at 60 days of age, there were twice as many SRIF cells in darkreared as in normal controls. It is suggested that, under conditions of dark rearing, the overall pattern of development of SRIF neurons, being uninfluenced by extrinsic factors, reveals the cells' genetic potential.  相似文献

Summary Visual phenomena evoked by direct electrical stimulation of extrastriate cortex were observed in 30 epileptic patients as part of a presurgical investigation. An incremental sequence of low-level bipolar stimulation trains was delivered at medial and lateral pairs of contacts of stereotaxically-implanted multilead intracerebral electrodes in parietal, occipital and posterior temporal regions. Diffusion of stimulus afterdischarges was monitored by electrodes in temporal and frontal lobes and by the non-stimulated contacts of the stimulated electrode. Localized stimulations evoked few visual phenomena. The strongest anatomo-perceptual correlation was found for stimulation in the medial parieto-occipital fissure which evoked visual motion phenomena in all three patients stimulated in that region. The evoked motion perceptions were not associated with eye movements or any particular localization of the epileptic focus. These perceptions were only evoked once outside of the medial PO region at the 61 sites examined. The results suggest that the medial parieto-occipital region is closely linked to the human visual motion processing system.  相似文献

Summary Using a polyclonal antiserum against neuropeptide Y (NPY; J.M. Allen et al. 1983a) immunohistochemistry was carried out using the PAP method. Neurones displaying NPY-like immunoreactivity are seen mainly in cortical layers V/ VI, adjacent white matter and corona radiata. Only few neurones occur in superficial layers II/III. Neurones are multipolar to bitufted with spineless dendrites; somata are either round (layers V, II/III) or spindle-like (layer VI, white matter) with diameters between 16 and 20 m. Axones were identified by their initial smoother profiles, which are smaller in diameter than principal dendrites, by their typical branching pattern and the occurrence of terminal portions. It was found, that the degree of axonal ramification in proximal parts of axones is rather poor. Most NPY-neurones seem to project intracortically or even locally, except neurones in layers VI and the white matter. The latter neurones have ascending axonal branches terminating in layer VI and V, thus contributing to the dense NPY-plexus in these layers, whereas some layer VI neurones have axonal branches descending into the white matter. The axonal plexus in upper cortical layers is most probably fed by the ascending axones of layer V neurones, passing layer IVc in a strictly vertical direction. Fine smooth fibers of unknown origin which ascend from the white matter in a vertical direction through the grey matter also contribute to the plexus in layer II/III. In semithin sectioned material three terminal types were identified. Firstly, en passant boutons on immunnegative pyramidal neurones, secondly, perisomatically arranged, basket-like terminals, bending around unstained non-pyramidal neurones, and thirdly, about 60 m long vertically oriented rows of boutons exclusively on apical dendrites of layer II/III pyramidal neurones. Due to the unconspicious axonal pattern and the frequently observed basket-like terminal form, we conclude that most NPY-ir neurones can be regarded as a class of unspecific local field basket cells; the origin of the vertically arranged bouton rows has been yet to determined.  相似文献
