During a winter training season, the effects of 12 weeks of intense training and 4 weeks of tapering off (taper) on plasma hormone concentrations and competition performance were investigated in a group of highly trained swimmers (n = 8). Blood samples were collected and the swimmers performed their speciality in competition at weeks 10 (mid-season), 22 (pre-taper) and 26 (post-taper). No statistically significant changes were observed in the concentrations of total testosterone (TT), non-sex hormone binding globulin-boundtestosterone (NSBT), cortisol (C), luteinising hormone, thyroid stimulating hormone, triiodothyronine, thyroxine plasma catecholamines, creatine kinase and ammonia during training and taper. Mid-season NSBT: C ratio and the amount of training were statistically related (r = 0.82,P < 0.05). Competition performance slightly declined during intense training [0.52 (SD 2.51) %, NS] and improved during taper [2.32 (SD 1.69)%,P < 0.01]. Changes in performance during training and taper correlated with changes in ratios TT: C (r = 0.86,P < 0.01andr = 0.81,P < 0.05, respectively) and NSBT: C (r = 0.77,P < 0.05 andr = 0.76,P < 0.05, respectively). In summary, these results showed that the monitored plasma hormones and metabolic indices were unaltered by 12 weeks of intense training and 4 weeks of taper. The TT: C and NSBT: C ratios, however, appeared to be effective markers of the swimmers' performance capacities throughout the training season.  相似文献

The P300-amplitude evoked with an acoustic oddball-paradigm is considered the most stable late event-related potential (ERP). This amplitude-index has become a standard parameter in electrophysiology. Recently, a robust ERP-parameter (NoGo-anteriorization, NGA) has been introduced, which reflects spatial brain electrical changes in relation to execution and inhibition of a motor response elicited with a Continuous Performance Test (CPT). The current study refers to the stability of this new topographical ERP-parameter compared to the stability of the classical P300-amplitude. For that purpose, 12 healthy subjects were investigated with both paradigms during recording of a 21-channel EEG. Analysis of the resulting ERPs revealed a very high stability for both, topographical and amplitude index: In every single subject, the brain electrical fields were characterized by a more anterior location in the NoGo- compared to the Go-condition (=NGA) and by higher amplitudes after target compared to distractor condition. T-tests, analyses of the effect size and of the power revealed equivalent differences between the two contrasting conditions for the topographical compared to the amplitude index. These results indicate that the stability of the topographical ERP-parameters elicited with the CPT is sufficient for an electrophysiological standard-index. The possibility to elicit a robust and specific spatial brain activation with the CPT is an ideal completion to the classical P300 amplitude effect and, therefore, hopefully will be a useful expansion of the standard paradigms in electrophysiological laboratories.  相似文献

Summary The ventilatory anaerobic threshold (VAT) during graded exercise was defined as the oxygen uptake ( ) immediately below the exercise intensity at which pulmonary ventilation increased disproportionally relative to . Since VAT is considered to be a sensitive and noninvasive measure for evaluating cardiorespiratoy endurance performance, the purpose of the present study was to determine normal values in children. We examined 257 healthy children (140 boys and 117 girls) varying in age from 5.7 to 18.5 years, during treadmill exercise. The data were analyzed in relation to sex and age. In boys the lowest (ml · min−1 · kg−1) was found in the youngest age group (5–6 year). In girls, on the other hand, no significant increase occurred with age. For VAT, expressed as ml O2 · min−1 · kg−1 or as a percent of a significant decrease was found in boys and girls with age. This suggests an increase in lactacid anaerobic capacity during growth. In contrast to observations in adults, only low correlations were found between and VAT (r=0.28 in boys and r=0.52 in girls), which suggests that the development of the underlying physiological mechanism does not occur at the same rate in growing children. These data provide normal values for VAT that can be used for clinical exercise testing in the pediatric age group.  相似文献

This study tested the influence of three ski pole grip systems (pole grip + wrist strap) on peak upper body power output: a traditional system (Swix PC grip and simple strap); a modern system (Swix PC grip and SR94 strap); an integrated system (Yoko 232 grip and Yoko 232 strap). Nine men [mean (SD): 32 (12) years, 177.0 (5.4) cm, 75.1 (6.0) kg] and two women [24 (9) years, 174.6 (3.6) cm, 67.3 (7.7) kg], all of whom were experienced cross-country ski racers at the regional, national, or international level for the U.S., performed three successive upper body power (UBP) tests on a modified double-poling ergometer. Each subject performed three 15-s tests of UBP using stiff cross-country ski poles (classic length; same poles for all tests per subject) and a resistance corresponding to 3% of body mass. Peak UBP was determined as the highest 5-s average power output during the last 10 s of each test. The three grip systems were tested in a counterbalanced order with 3–3.5 min of rest between tests. Peak UBP data were analyzed using a two-factor RM ANOVA and Sheffes post-hoc test at the 0.05 alpha level. Peak UBP for the integrated system [mean (SE): 169.2 (6.8) W or 2.30 (0.06) W/kg] was significantly higher than value for both the modern [164.1 (7.2) W or 2.23 (0.07) W/kg] and traditional systems [162.5 (7.0) W, or 2.21 (0.06) W/kg] for absolute and relative power output (P<0.05). Given that double-poling peak UBP can be influenced by the ski pole grip system, a skiers choice of grip system may also influence cross-country ski racing performance.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a new test of muscle function, termed the isoinertial force-mass relationship, and to determine its relationship to dynamic physical performance in comparison to an isometric test. A group of 13 trained subjects performed an isometric, and a series of iso-inertial maximal upper body tests, in a bench press movement at loads of 30%, 60%, 100% (concentric) and 100%, 130% and 150% (eccentric) of maximum. Vertical forces exerted throughout the movement were recorded by a force plate. In addition, the subjects performed the following three performance tests: a maximal bench press, a seated shotput, and two drop bench-press throws from a height of 0.25 m, with loads of 10 kg and 30% of maximum. Correlation analysis demonstrated that in each instance the iso-inertial force mass tests were the best predictors of performance (r=0.78–0.88) with both contraction type and mass specific effects apparent. Maximal isometric force and rate of force development were significantly related to some performance variables (r=0.22–0.78). However, for all the performance movements assessed, the iso-inertial test modality recorded the highest relationship to performance. The difference in the relationship between performance and iso-inertial and isometric test modalities was particularly evident in the light load dynamic performance of the seated shotput (r=0.86 vsr=0.38, respectively). These results are explained in part by the neural and mechanical differences between iso-inertial and isometric muscle actions and their respective specificity to dynamic physical performance.  相似文献

In order to determine the extent to which distraction disrupts performance when attention is divided, the distribution of attention across five auditory input channels was assessed using the N1 component of the human auditory evoked potential. In addition, the possibility that methylphenidate (Ritalin) affects the distribution of attention across input channels was tested. Sixteen subjects performed a tone discrimination task under conditions of focused attention and divided attention, both with and without the presence of stimuli interposed between the points to be attended. The subjects performed in two sessions during which they received either methylphenidate (10 mg) or a placebo in a double-blind design. The results showed that the interposed stimuli were receiving some attention resulting in a disruption of performance. Methylphenidate did not affect the distribution of attention as reflected in the N1 wave. The data are interpreted as showing that: 1) distraction plays a major role in producing performance deficits observed with divided attention; and 2) methylphenidate does not appreciably affect the distribution of attention across input channels.  相似文献

A persistent problem in stress research has been that some individuals may show impairment, while others show improvement or no change in performance under stress. Attempts to relate this variance in performance to general anxiety or other personality variables have generally not been too successful. Based upon responses to a fear of shock item in an attitude questionnaire, Ss were classified as “high fear of shock” or “low fear of shock” types. Half of the Ss in each group were assigned a perceptual-motor task; the others were assigned a cognitive-interference task. After training, all Ss were informed that they would be required to maintain their training performance levels in a situation in which they would be shocked if performance declined. Performance and heart rate measures taken during training were compared with the same measures taken under the threat-of-shock conditions. Results indicate significant differences between groups in both performance and physiological activity with “high fear of shock”Ss exhibiting relatively greater performance impairment and increased heart rate.  相似文献

The intra-aortic balloon pump has been widely used as a temporary heart-assist device. In this investigation, a nonlinear mathematical model of the arterial system and intra-aortic balloon pump was studied analytically. Thus, the influences of a number of vascular parameters on the effectiveness of intra-aortic balloon pumping (IABP) were determined. The effects of changes in vascular parameters of the model on a number of performance indexes were investigated. These performance indexes (aortic mean diastolic pressure, aortic end diastolic pressure, cardiac output, coronary flow and phase differences between the fundamental Fourier components of aortic root pressure and flow) were used as the criterion for an evaluation of the effectiveness of the assist pump. The following vascular parameters were perturbed by four steps (±10%, ±20%) from the values in the standard model: heart rate, peripheral resistance, left ventricular pressure, aortic elastance, aortic radius, arterial wall thickness, and aortic length. This model was evaluated for a wide range of balloon-pump phase-control settings (assisted case) and for the unassisted case (when the pump is disabled). It is concluded that changes in heart rate, peripheral resistance and left ventricular pressure cause the most significant changes in pump performance. The present study was designed to investigate the relationship between intra-and inter-individual differences in arousal level and performance on both critical flicker fusion frequency and figural reversal tasks. Forty male undergraduate Ss were used. Electrical skin conductance was used as the indicant of arousal level. For the intra-individual comparisons white noise was used to increase the Ss’arousal levels. Significant inverted U-shaped relationships were found between both flicker fusion thresholds and rates of figural reversal and skin conductance between individuals. A significant curvilinear relationship was found between rates of figural reversal and level of conductance within individuals. No significant curvilinear relationship was found between flicker fusion thresholds and level of conductance within individuals.  相似文献
