Reliability and validity of dermatology life quality index： assess- ment of quality of life in human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome patients with pruritic papular erup- tion

OBJECTIVE： To test the reliability and validity of dermatology life quality index（DLQI） in simplified Chinese language by assessing the quality of life（QoL） in HIV（human immunodeficiency virus）/AIDS（Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome） patients with pruritic papular eruption（PPE）. METHODS： A study of simplified-Chinese-versiond from10 questions with the principal component analysis and the contribution rate of the 3 common factors was 59.95%. CONCLUSION： The simplified-Chinese-version DIQL is an acceptable and valid scale for HIV/AIDS patients with PPE. It can be used to evaluate the QoL of HIV/AIDS patients with PPE in China.     

Life quality assessment among patients with atopic eczema

BACKGROUND: Quantification of quality of life (QoL) related to disease severity is important in patients with atopic eczema (AE), because the assessment provides additional information to the traditional objective clinical scoring systems. OBJECTIVES: To measure health-related QoL (HRQoL) in patients with AE; to analyse discriminant, divergent and convergent validity by examining the association between various QoL methods; and to examine the association between disease severity assessed by an objective Severity Scoring of Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) and QoL. METHODS: HRQoL was assessed at two visits at a 6-monthly interval in 101 patients with AE and 30 controls with one dermatology-specific questionnaire [Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) or Children's DLQI (CDLQI)], one generic instrument (SF-36) and three visual analogue scales (VASs) of severity and pruritus. Objective SCORAD was used to measure disease severity. RESULTS: Patients with AE had significantly lower QoL than healthy controls and the general population. DLQI /CDLQI, pruritus, and patient and investigator overall assessment of eczema severity were significantly (P < 0.0001) and positively correlated with SCORAD, while the generic questionnaire showed only poor correlation. A gender difference was found for the mental component score of SF-36 (P = 0.019). CONCLUSIONS: AE has an impact on HRQoL. Patients' mental health, social functioning and role emotional functioning seem to be more affected than physical functioning. A simple VAS score of patients' assessment of disease severity showed the highest and most significant correlations with most of the HRQoL methods used. There is evidence to support the ability of patients with AE to make an accurate determination of their disease severity and QoL.     

Langerin, the "Catcher in the Rye": an important receptor for pathogens on Langerhans cells

Langerhans cells (LCs) are a distinct subset of DCs that resides in the epidermis and other epithelia. They are potent antigen-presenting cells and strong inducers of T-cell responses. Like other DC types, LCs express C-type lectins that serve as antigen/pathogen uptake receptors, with Langerin/CD207 being the characteristic LC C-type lectin. In this issue of the European Journal of Immunology, Geijtenbeek and colleagues [Eur. J. Immunol. 2011. 41: 2619-2631] assign a role to Langerin on human LCs for binding and capturing measles virus. Interestingly, however, this function does not correlate with productive infection or with cross-presentation of measles virus. These authors show that measles virus does not infect the LCs via Langerin, and that LCs cannot cross-present the virus to CD8(+) T cells; however, presentation of this virus to CD4(+) T cells occurs and is dependent on virus capture by Langerin. Thus, cross-presentation of measles virus may be left to skin DCs other than LCs. This highlights the complexity of anti-viral T-cell responses that originate in the skin and also emphasizes the need for intensified investigations into human skin DCs in order to be able to ultimately harness their potential for immunotherapy.     

Comparison of serum IgE determination by radioimmunoassay and by single radial immunodiffusion

Two commercially available methods of total serum IgE determination have been evaluated, viz: the radioimmunosorbent test (RIST) and the assay by single radial immunodiffusion (RID). RIST was found a suitable and rapid method for the wide range of IgE concentrations to be expected in the sera of an allergic population. The RID method has a lower limit of detection of about 1000 I.U./ml; over this value, both techniques provided statistically correlated results. However, for technological reasons RID was considered less suitable for routine application.
