Self-efficacy and the maintenance of exercise participation in older adults   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10  
The role played by exercise self-efficacy in the maintenance of exercise participation of previously sedentary middle-aged adults 4 months after the termination of a formal exercise program is reported. Correlational and multiple regression analyses examined the influence of self-efficacy, physiological (aerobic capacity, sex, body composition), and behavioral (past exercise frequency and intensity) parameters in the maintenance of exercise participation. Self-efficacy significantly predicted exercise behavior at follow-up when controlling for biological and behavioral influences. Aerobic capacity, exercise efficacy, and exercise behavior in combination were significantly related to current energy expenditure in aerobic physical activity. The discussion focuses on the need to examine the impact of different correlates of exercise behavior at different stages of the exercise process.This project was funded by Grant AG07907 from the National Institute on Aging.  相似文献

During (January) 1986–(May) 1988, we examined 272 eyes in 136 rhesus monkeys in the closed Cayo Santiago colony of the Caribbean Primate Research Center of the University of Puerto Rico. Seventy-eight eyes were less than 10 years of age. One hundred and ninety-four were aged 10–28 years. The fundi were examined and photographed. Fluorescein angiography was performed in some eyes. Selected cases were evaluated for acuity loss by recording of pattern-evoked retinal and cortical signals. Light and electron microscopy were used to evaluate the pigment epithelium of some animals. Thirty-eight percent of all eyes had posterior pole drusen. Incidence was highly age-related. When late-stage lesions were found, we did not see neovascularization, but late hyperfluorescence was consistent with degenerative scarring and atrophy. Electrophysiology demonstrated moderately reduced acuity in the presence of numerous macular drusen. Electrooculograms were low normal. Histopathology showed changes identical to those reported in human age-related macular degeneration. No eyes less than 10 years of age had confluent drusen or disciform-like lesions. The incidence of drusen in samples of some social groups was much higher than others.  相似文献

P-glycoprotein, a 170-kd glycoprotein encoded by theMDR 1 gene, is a member of a highly conserved superfamily of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transport proteins. It shares extensive homology with numerous bacterial and eukaryotic ABC transport proteins. P-glycoprotein acts as an energy-dependent efflux pump that appears to transport structurally diverse agents ranging from ions to peptides. P-glycoprotein (P-gP) has been implicated as playing a role in multidrug (MDR) resistance in cancer, chloroquine-resistantPlasmodium falciparum infection, and possibly human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) resistance to nucleoside compounds. A number of normal tissues in humans and rodents have been shown to express high levels of P-gp. The expression and function of P-gp in cells of the immune system have been explored in the past 2 years. This review presents a state of the art regarding the expression, regulation, and function of Pgp in cells of the immune system. In addition, its alteration in aging and HIV-1 infection is reviewed. A possible physiologic role of P-gp in cytokine secretion, antigen processing/presentation, and effector functions is also discussed.  相似文献

MRL-lpr/lpr (MRL/lpr) mice spontaneously develop arthritis by an increase in the incidence of agalactosylated oligosaccharides in serum IgG, similar to rheumatoid arthritis patients. However, whether this association has a pathogenic significance is still unknown. In this study, we analyzed the oligosaccharide structure of serum IgG in various MRL mice with or without arthritis, to clarify the relationship between the oligosaccharide abnormality and the development of arthritis. The level of agalactosylation in serum IgG was comparable in both arthritis-free MRL/lpr and MRL-+/+ (MRL/+) mice at 6 weeks of age. In contrast, the incidence of IgG lacking galactose markedly increased in MRL/lpr mice at 6 months of age (the age at which arthritis occurred), compared with that from age-matched MRL/+ mice without arthritis. However, the proportion of agalactosylated IgG increased similarly in anti-CD4 monoclonal antibody-treated MRL/lpr mice at 6 months of age, despite the absence of the development of arthritis, because of depletion of CD4+ T cells. These results suggest that the abnormality in IgG galactosylation of MRL/lpr mice developed in an age-dependent manner, but it did so independently of CD4+ T cell-dependent B-cell activation and is not a consequence of the development of arthritis.  相似文献

用形态计量的方法对老年(30个月)和成年(17个月)大鼠脑(Golgi染色标本)的海马CA3区锥体细胞的树突分支进行分级计数和测量了终末支的长度。结果是CA3神经元基树突和顶树突共有9级分支,衰老时第4级和第9级分支有显著的增多(P<0.02,P<0.03)。基树突终末支的长度衰老时无明显改变,顶树突终末支长度较成年组增加(P<0.05)。提示衰老时海马神经元的树突仍具有一定的增生和分化能力。这可能是对神经元退变的一种代偿机制。  相似文献

运用免疫组化ABC法对不同月龄SD大鼠心脏冠状动脉及其分支含神经肽Y神经纤维的分布及其衰老变化作了详细观察.结果表明:左、右冠状动脉及其各级分支具有丰富的神经肽Y能神经分布.在冠状动脉主干及其较大分支上,神经纤维较稠密,主要呈环状或网状分布,在血管围周形成较多束、丛、网,并伸入血管壁内形成壁内的神经网络分布.部分神经纤维的游离末梢有穿过血管内膜伸向腔面的迹象.在细小的冠状动脉分支上,神经纤维密度减低,主要沿血管长袖是纵向分布.两侧冠状动脉系统神经肽Y能纤维分布形式及密度没有差别.老龄组动物,左、右冠状动脉及其分支的神经肽Y能纤维密度趋于下降,纤维变细,呈断续状,膨体数量减少,免疫染色变浅、此外,在心内发现了神经肽Y能神经节.  相似文献

The hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (ARCN) was examined ultrastructurally 3 weeks after the complete deafferentation of the medial basal hypothalamus (MBH) with the island isolation technique in ovariectomized aged female rats (720-930 days of age). The mean numbers of axodendritic and axosomatic synapses in the ARCN decreased to about one-third of those in the intact controls. However, the treatment with estradiol benzoate (2 micrograms/day) during the 3 weeks following the day of brain surgery brought about a marked increase in the numbers of these synapses. The data suggest that the ARCN neurons of aged female rats still retain plasticity to react to deafferentation under influences of estrogen.  相似文献
