Experience with Virocult as a viral collection and transportation system

Virocult was used as a supplemental viral collection and transportation system. It compared favorably with tryptose phosphate broth in maintaining clinically important viruses. Advantages of Virocult over tryptose phosphate broth are commercial availability; extended shelf life at ambient temperature; and ease of use.     

Respiratory obstruction in the newborn associated with increased volume and opacification of the hemithorax

Respiratory obstruction in the newborn can be associated with retained fetal pulmonary fluid if the obstruction was present in utero. The chest roentgenogram demonstrates increased volume and radiopacity of the affected lung. Two patients in respiratory distress with these roentgenographic manifestations are presented. The diagnostic approach to this problem is discussed.     

Eye movement responses of heroin addicts and controls during word and object recognition

The eye movement responses of heroin addicts and matched controls were examined while they were engaged in word and object recognition tasks. Significant differences between the two groups were found which could be attributed to motivational or interest factors associated with the importance of the materials shown, and to basic differences in the physiological and central nervous system processes that regulate eye movements. Based on these findings together with earlier observations of differences in cutaneous sensitivity between addicts and controls, it was hypothesized that addiction may lead to an altered sensory capacity in the temporal domain which is concerned with gating and subsequent scanning of stimuli. The potential role of educational differences between the two groups was also discussed.     

Effect of intravenous infusion on development of pulmonary oedema after inhalation injury

Last year, after a systematic search of pathological and pathophysiological changes of inhalation injury in dogs, we recorded severe pulmonary oedema as early as 2 h postburn (the earliest monitoring time designed in experiment) on dogs inflicted with both body surface and severe respiratory burns without any fluid replacement during the whole course of experiment. In an analysis of cases admitted into our burn centre in the past ten years, we also found that there was no definite relationship between the incidence and severity of pulmonary oedema occurring in severe burn patients and the amount of fluid infused in the early burn phase. These facts led us to the following experiment designed to study the effect of intravenous infusion on development of pulmonary oedema after severe burns complicated with inhalation injuries.     

The effect of immediate versus delayed dowel space preparation on the integrity of the apical seal

This in vitro study evaluated the effect of immediate vs delayed preparation of dowel space on the integrity of the apical seal. Twenty human teeth were obturated by lateral compaction of gutta-percha and cement and stored. Two weeks later, 20 more were similarly filled. Using warm endodontic pluggers, dowel spaces were prepared so that either 3 mm or 7 mm of apical fill remained. The specimens were treated in ⁴⁵CaCl₂, horizontally sectioned, and autoradiographs were made. Analysis of the incidence and degree of microleakage showed that delayed preparations significantly increased leakage (P <.01) if only 3 mm of apical fill remained.
