This study investigated the effects of 12 weeks of aerobic exercise plus voluntary food restriction on the body composition, resting metabolic rate (RMR) and aerobic fitness of mildly obese middle-aged women. The subjects were randomly assigned to exercise/diet (n = 17) or control (n = 15) groups. The exercise/diet group participated in an aerobic training programme, 45–60 min · day –1 at 50%–60% of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), 3–4 days · week–1, and also adopted a self-regulated energy deficit relative to predicted energy requirements (–1.05 MJ · day –1 to –1.14 MJ · day –1 ). After the regimen had been followed for 12 weeks, the body mass of the subjects had decreased by an average of 4.5 kg, due mainly to fat loss, with little change of fat free mass (m
ff). The absolute RMR did not change, but the experimental group showed significant increases in the RMR per unit of body mass (10%) and the RMR per unit of m
ff (4%). The increase in RMR/m
ff was not correlated with any increase in VO2max/m
ff. The resting heat production per unit of essential body mass increased by an average of 21%, but the resting heat production rate per unit of fat tissue mass remained unchanged. Summary The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of knit structure in underwear on thermoregulatory responses. Underwear manufactured from 100% polypropylene fibres in five different knit structures (1-by-1 rib, fleece, fishnet, interlock, double-layer rib) was evaluated. All five underwear prototypes were tested as part of a prototype clothing system. Measured on a thermal manikin these clothing systems had total thermal resistances of 0.243, 0.268, 0.256, 0.248 and 0.250 m2 · K · W–1, respectively (including a value for the thermal resistance of the ambient environment of 0.104 m2 · K · W–1). Human testing was done on eight male subjects and took place at ambient temperature (T
a)=5°C, dew point temperature (T

Skin wettedness was calculated. The differences in knit structure of the underwear in the clothing systems resulted in significant differences in mean skin temperature, local and average skin wettedness, non-evaporated and evaporated sweat during the course of the intermittent exercise test. The main purpose of the study was to compare the efficiency of the Fishbein and Ajzen and the Triandis models to predict (1) the intention to participate regularly in some physical activities during free time within a 3-week period and (2) the exercise behavior within these 3 weeks among a group of 166 subjects, aged 22 to 65 years. Our results show that the Triandis model was as efficient as the Fishbein and Ajzen model in predicting the exercise behavior. However, the results obtained from the Triandis model demonstrate the importance of the habit of exercising in predicting the exercise behavior. Moreover, the Triandis model was superior to the Fishbein and Ajzen model in explaining behavioral intention. Of particular interest was the salience of the affective, social, and personal belief components of the Triandis model. In addition, from a practical perspective, this comparative study showed that (1) to exercise regularly is perceived as hard work, and (2) individuals believe that it is their own responsibility to exercise or not to exercise. 相似文献

Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a fatal disease caused by mutations in the DMD gene that lead to quantitative and qualitative disturbances in dystrophin expression. Dystrophin is a member of the spectrin superfamily of proteins. Dystrophin itself is closely related to three proteins that constitute a family of dystrophin‐related proteins (DRPs): the chromosome 6‐encoded DRP or utrophin, the chromosome‐X encoded, DRP2 and the chromosome‐18 encoded, dystrobrevin. These proteins share sequence similarity and functional motifs with dystrophin. Current attempts at somatic gene therapy of DMD face numerous technical problems. An alternative strategy for DMD therapy, that circumvents many of these problems, has arisen from the demonstration that the DRP utrophin can functionally substitute for the missing dystrophin and its overexpression can rescue dystrophin‐deficient muscle. Currently, a promising avenue of research consists of identifying molecules that would increase the expression of utrophin and the delivery of these molecules to dystrophin‐deficient tissues as a means of DMD therapy. In this review, we will focus on DRPs from the perspective of strategies and issues related to upregulating utrophin expression for DMD therapy. Additionally, we will address the techniques used for anatomical, biochemical and physiological evaluation of the potential benefits of this and other forms of DMD therapy in dystrophin‐deficient animal models. 相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of maximal arm exercise on the skin blood circulation of the paralyzed
lower limbs in persons with spinal cord injury (PSCI). Eight male PSCI with complete lesions located between T3 and L1 performed
graded maximal arm-cranking exercise (MACE) to exhaustion. The skin blood flux at the thigh (SBFT) and that at the calf (SBFC)
were monitored using laser-Doppler flowmeter at rest and for 15 s immediately after the MACE. The subject's mean peak oxygen
uptake and peak heart rate was 1.41 ± 0.22 l · min–1 and 171.6 ± 19.2 beats · min–1, respectively. No PSCI showed any increase in either SBFT or SBFC after the MACE, when compared with the values at rest.
These results suggest that the blood circulation of the skin in the paralyzed lower limbs in PSCI is unaffected by the MACE.

Aim: The efficacy of a mechanical, gravity‐independent resistance exercise (RE) system to induce strength gains and muscle hypertrophy was validated. Designed for space crew in orbit, this technique offers resistance during coupled concentric and eccentric actions by utilizing the inertia of a rotating flywheel(s), set in motion by the trainee. Methods: Ten middle‐aged (30–53 years) men and women performed four sets of seven maximal, unilateral (left limb) knee extensions two or three times weekly for 5 weeks. Knee extensor force and electromyographic (EMG) activity of the three superficial quadriceps muscles were measured before and after this intervention. In addition, with the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), volume of individual knee extensor and ankle plantar flexor muscles was assessed. Results: Over the 12 training sessions, the average concentric (CON) and eccentric (ECC) force generated during exercise increased by 11% (P < 0.05). Likewise, maximal isometric strength (maximal voluntary contraction, MVC) at 90 and 120° knee angle increased by (P < 0.05) 11 and 12% respectively, after training. Neither individual quadriceps muscle showed a change (P > 0.05) in maximal integrated EMG (iEMG) activity. Quadriceps muscle volume increased by 6.1% (P < 0.05). Although the magnitude of response varied, all individual quadriceps muscles showed increased (P < 0.05) volume after training. As expected, ankle plantar flexor volume of the trained limb was unchanged (P > 0.05). Likewise, MVC, CON and ECC force, iEMG and knee extensor and plantar flexor muscle volume were unaltered (P > 0.05) in the right, non‐trained limb. Conclusion: The results of this study show that the present RE regimen produces marked muscle hypertrophy and important increases in maximal voluntary strength and appears equally effective as RE paradigms using gravity‐dependent weights, in this regard. 相似文献

Aim: Hormone‐sensitive lipase (HSL) has been proposed to regulate triacylglycerol (TG) breakdown in skeletal muscle. In muscles with different fibre type compositions the influence on HSL of two major stimuli causing TG mobilization was studied. Methods: Incubated soleus and extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles from 70 g rats were stimulated by adrenaline (5.5 μm , 6 min) or contractions (200 ms tetani, 1 Hz, 1 min) in maximally effective doses or by both adrenaline and contractions. Results: Hormone‐sensitive lipase activity was increased significantly by adrenaline as well as contractions, and the highest activity (P < 0.05) was seen with combined stimulation [Soleus: 0.40 ± 0.03 (SE) m‐unit mg protein?1 (basal), 0.65 ± 0.02 (adrenaline), 0.65 ± 0.03 (contractions), 0.78 ± 0.03 (adrenaline and contractions); EDL: 0.18 ± 0.01, 0.30 ± 0.02, 0.26 ± 0.02, 0.32 ± 0.01]. Glycogen phosphorylase activity was always increased more by adrenaline compared with contractions [Soleus: 60 ± 4 (a/a + b)% vs. 46 ± 3 (P < 0.05); EDL: 60 ± 5 vs. 39 ± 6 (P < 0.05)]. After combined stimulation glycogen phosphorylase activity in soleus [59 ± 3 (a/a + b)%] was identical to and in EDL [45 ± 4 (a/a + b)%] smaller (P < 0.05) than the activity after adrenaline only. Conclusions: In slow‐twitch oxidative as well as in fast‐twitch glycolytic muscle HSL is activated by both adrenaline and contractions. These stimuli are partially additive indicating at least partly different mechanisms of action. Contractions may impair the enhancing effect of adrenaline on glycogen phosphorylase activity in muscle. 相似文献

(Δ, heavy and severe exercise). Critical velocity (CV) was also determined using four maximal treadmill runs designed to result
in exhaustion in 2–15 min. The
response was modelled using non-linear regression techniques. As expected, the amplitude of the
primary component increased with exercise intensity [from 1,868 (136) ml·min–1 at 80% LT to 3,296 (218) ml·min–1 at 100% Δ, P<0.05]. However, there was a non-significant trend for the "gain" of the primary component to decrease as exercise intensity
increased [181 (7) ml·kg–1·km–1 at 80% LT to 160 (6) ml·kg–1·km–1 at 100% Δ]. The time constant of the primary component was not different between supra-LT running speeds (mean value range
= 17.9–19.1 s), but was significantly shorter during the 80% LT trial [12.7 (1.4) s, P<0.05]. The
slow component increased with exercise intensity from 139 (39) ml·min–1 at 20% Δ to 487 (57) ml·min–1 at 80% Δ (P<0.05), but decreased to 317 (84) ml·min–1 during the 100% Δ trial (P<0.05). During both the 80% Δ and 100% Δ trials, the
at the end of exercise reached
[4,152 (242) ml·min–1 and 4,154 (114) ml·min–1, respectively]. Our results suggest that the "gain" of the primary component is not constant as exercise intensity increases
across the moderate, heavy and severe domains of treadmill running. These intensity-dependent changes in the amplitudes and

response profiles may be associated with the changing patterns of muscle fibre recruitment that occur as exercise intensity
increases.

The fibre-type specific expression patterns of fast and slow isoforms of essential (alkali) myosin light chains (ELC) was analysed in trained, untrained and pathological human muscles. Biopsies from m. vastus lateralis of moderately trained and untrained persons, as well as highly trained endurance and strength athletes were analysed, by in situ hybridization, for the expression of the `fast' ELC 1f/3f and the `slow' ELC 1sb. We wanted to investigate if changes in the fibre-type specific ELC mRNA pattern could be used as markers for training adaptation, especially, if the mRNA of the slow ELC 1sb isoform would appear in type IIA fibres as a result of endurance training (Baumann et al. 1987). We found the fast/slow ELC expression patterns in the fibre types to be remarkably stable. Physiological stress, even high training loads, did not affect it. No IIA fibres expressing ELC 1sb mRNA were found. They could be detected, however, in pathological muscle samples, where fast/slow ELC patterns not found in normal muscles were frequent. Our data suggest that in healthy muscles, only a subset of the theoretically possible combinations of myosin heavy and light chain isoforms are expressed at the level of their mRNAs. 相似文献

The aim of the present study was to compare electromyographic responses during arm exercises with a crank rate chosen spontaneously (TS) or set at 20% below or above (T–20, T+20) the spontaneously chosen crank rate (SCCR). Ten male physical education students performed arm exercises with intensities ranging from 20% to 80% of maximal power. Muscular activity levels were analysed for the biceps brachii and the triceps brachii muscles using integrated rectified surface electromyography (iEMG). All values were presented as the mean and standard deviation. During TS, the sum of iEMG for the two muscles studied was significantly (P<0.05) lower than during T+20 for each power output. No significant differences were observed in iEMG values between TS and T–20. The hypothesis that SCCR relates to a minimisation of muscle activation during an upper body exercise was not confirmed. Variations superior or inferior to a 20% increase of the iEMG responses do not influence it. Moreover, the selection of crank rates depends on the power output and the SCCR increased significantly (P<0.05) with increasing power output. 相似文献
