The effect of hydrostatic pressure (HP) on antidiuretic hormone (ADH) stimulated osmotic water flow (Jv) across the toad urinary bladder was evaluated. Jv for ADH-stimulated bladders was significantly reduced by an elevation of the serosal HP gradient to 1 cm H2O. Subsequent elimination of the HP gradient resulted in a recovery of Jv. Serosal HP also caused a reversible increase in sucrose permeability (P sucrose). For ADH-treated bladders fixed with glutaraldehyde during serosal HP exposure, subsequent exposure to a mucosal or serosal HP gradient caused acceleration or inhibition of Jv, respectively. The reduction in ADH-associated Jv with serosal HP was apparently caused by a back-flux of water through a paracellular pathway. Jv and P sucrose were not affected by mucosal HP during ADH stimulation. The results suggest a specific sensitivity of a paracellular pathway to a small serosal HP gradient in bladders with ADH-stimulated water flow. The reversibility of this effect on P sucrose suggests that the elements comprising the apical junctions are dynamic structures capable of recovering at least some of their permeability properties. 相似文献

Baseline diastolic blood pressure measurements made on a single subject for 120 consecutive days were utilized to demonstrate the use of autocorrelation techniques for the identification of cycles of one or more periods present in the data. Provided only a single period is present, averaging techniques using this period as the base may be used to smooth the data. However, few physiological variables cycle so simply. The effects of thermochemotherapy using cyclophosphamide plus hyperthermia on the malignant pleural mesothelioma in vivo 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The human malignant pleural mesothelioma is related to the use of asbestos in the majority of cases. Though the use of asbestos has been prohibited since the 1990s, the incidence of pleural mesothelioma is still increasing because of a latency period of at least 20 years. This study investigated the benefit of single therapy with cyclophosphamide or hyperthermia or the combination of both on cells of a human pleural mesothelioma cell line, xenotransplanted subcutaneously in the paw of mice. A CONTROL group received the same volume of physiological saline. The oxygenation of tumours was measured, tumour growth was followed over 3 weeks, immunohistochemical studies and a light and electron microscopic evaluation were performed. Chemotherapy or hyperthermia alone was only temporarily effective. The greatest benefit was achieved using combined thermochemotherapy consisting of cyclophosphamide plus hyperthermia: 50% of this group had partial remissions, and 67% responded to this therapy. After 3 weeks tumours grew again. Superior effects could be achieved by performing additional cycles of chemotherapy or adding another drug or radiation for instance. The aim of the present research was to study individual response specificity in 22 male patients having essential hypertension (HT) and to compare these patients with age-matched male normotensive controls (NT). Four stimuli, letter identification, mental arithmetic, cold pressor and isometric exercise, were administered while recordings were made of: systolic and diastolic blood pressures, heart rate, respiration, forearm and hand blood flows, and skin conductance level and fluctuations. After each session urine samples were collected and epinephrine and norepinephrine levels were analyzed. Twelve subjects in the HT group were given beta-adrenergic blocking agents and retested 1 to 21 months (X?= 12 months) after the first session. Each response was standardized, using NT as the reference group. Intraclass correlations were computed to evaluate whether HT males reacted with a more consistent hierarchy of responses than did NT. Intraclass correlations were significantly higher among the patients than in the control group, regardless of whether the blood pressure response was included or excluded in the computation of the intraclass correlations. Thus, we conclude that male HT patients show more individual response specificity than NT controls. Beta-adrenergic receptor antagonists reduced levels of cardiovascular activity and attenuated reactivity but did not affect amount of specificity. Thus, intraclass correlations provide unique and useful information, since they are not related to blood pressure reactivity or to urinary catecholamine levels, nor affected by beta-adrenergic blockade. 相似文献

Increased adrenal cortical activity and hypertrophy of adrenal glands associated with defeat and social subordination have been reported frequently in small mammals; these adrenal changes have been linked to impairments in immune response, glucose metabolism and reproductive performance. Similar studies in primates have produced variable results. The current study was undertaken to illuminate the effects of social status on the adrenal gland and to examine concurrent effects of social variables on other physiological systems in Macaca fascicularis, in an initial exploration of the hypothesis that high and low social status have different physiological consequences. Sixty adult male M. fascicularis were housed in social groups of n = 5, under either stable or unstable social conditions. It was found that subordinate animals had heavier adrenal glands and somewhat higher plasma glucose concentrations than dominants. In contrast, dominants had higher blood pressure and worsened atherosclerosis, under some conditions, than subordinates. These data appear to offer preliminary support for Henry and Stephen's hypothesis of differential arousal of dominant and subordinate animals. 相似文献

To examine the effects of pulmonary vascular pressures and flow on pulmonary blood volume (PBV), experiments were performed at constant heart rate and zone 3 conditions (mean left atrial pressure (LAP) above airway pressure) in six anesthetized, open-chest dogs. PBV was calculated as the product of electromagnetic aortic flow and pulmonary mean transit time for ascorbate, obtained without blood withdrawal by polarographic recording of aortic ascorbate changes. In three series of experiments LAP was raised similarly in three steps, from 4.5 to 14.8 mmHg: by mitral constriction which reduced pulmonary blood flow, by blood volume expansion which more than doubled pulmonary blood flow, or by a combination of the two procedures which kept pulmonary blood flow constant. In all three series, LAP and mean pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) rose in proportion, but PBV was better correlated to PAP (r=0.87±0.02) than to LAP (r=0.66±0.09). These experiments suggest that PAP is the most important factor in determining PBV under zone 3 conditions, whether PAP is raised by increasing pulmonary blood flow or by mitral constriction. 相似文献

Although potentially fatal increases in intracranial pressure (ICP) can occur in a number of pathological conditions, there
is no reliable and noninvasive procedure to detect ICP elevation and quantitatively monitor changes over time. In this experimental
study, the relationships between ICP elevation and the vibrational response of the head were determined. An ovine animal model
was employed in which incremental increases in ICP were elicited and directly measured through intraventricular cannulae.
At each ICP increment, a vibration source elicited a flexural response of the animal's head that was measured at four locations
on the skull using accelerometers. Spectral analysis of the responses showed changes in proportion to ICP change up to roughly
20 cm H2O (15 mm Hg) above normal; a clinically significant range. Both magnitude and phase changes at frequencies between 4 and 7
kHz correlated well (γ>0.92) with ICP across the study group. These findings suggest that the vibrational response of the
head can be used to monitor changes in ICP noninvasively. 相似文献
