The existence of sex differences in digit‐length ratio (especially between the second and fourth digits, 2D:4D) is well established for humans from fetal life onwards, and has been linked with later performance. In rodents, the ratio is affected prenatally by exposure to androgens and estrogens, with some research suggesting an influence from sex of the neighbouring intrauterine fetus. However, the ubiquity and ontogenetic development of sexual dimorphism in digit ratios is not well established among wild amniotes. We report the first digit ratios for a gekkotan lizard, representing a speciose lineage in which viviparity has evolved independently from mammals and other reptiles. For the gecko Woodworthia “Otago/Southland”, in which up to two embryos develop in separate uteri, we found: (1) significant sexual dimorphism in adults in 2D:3D of the right hindlimb only (larger in males), but not in 2D:4D for any limb; (2) no dimorphism in ratios for young juveniles, with no influence of sex of the interuterine twin, and no relationship with sprint speed; (3) in preserved tissues of the same juveniles, no sexual dimorphism in ratios, but a change in relative lengths of some digits with preservation. The ontogenetic pattern might be explained by altered sex–steroid exposure at the transition to adulthood rather than during prenatal development. Our results support a phylogenetic hypothesis that sauropsids (birds and reptiles) differ from mammals in the direction of sex difference, if present. Leptin is a hormone secreted mainly by the adipose cells with a primary role in the regulation of body weight by establishing a feedback loop between the energy reserves and the hypothalamic centers that control food intake. Recent data suggest that, in addition, leptin interacts with other endocrine systems to provide critical information about the size of the fat stores, acting as a permissive factor that allows the triggering of energy-demanding situations, as the onset of puberty and the reproduction, only when the size of the fuel reserve is large enough to guarantee its success. In addition, leptin appears to play a role during pregnancy and lactation, as it is produced by the placenta and is present in maternal milk. The fact that leptin levels are always higher in females, even after correcting for body fat content, suggests that the interaction between the adipose tissue and the reproductive system is modulated in a different way in males and females by androgenic and estrogenic hormones. In fact, adipose tissue samples taken from male donors are completely refractory in vitro to the action of both estrogens and androgens. On the contrary, dihydrotestosterone, androstenedione and dehydroepiandrosterone-S are potent inhibitors of leptin secretion, while estradiol induces a strong stimulation in adipose tissue taken from women. Recent studies suggest that post-menopausal women demonstrate stronger preferences for feminine characteristics in male and female faces than do pre-menopausal women, potentially reflecting stronger preferences for healthy men and greater derogation of attractive women among more fertile women. A limitation of this work was that it assessed circum-menopausal women's face preferences using images of young adults only. Here, we found that post-menopausal women demonstrated stronger preferences for feminine characteristics in male and female peer-aged faces that did pre-menopausal women. These data present novel evidence for circum-menopausal variation in face perception and confirm that the circum-menopausal variation in face preferences observed previously was not an artefact of the young faces employed as stimuli.  相似文献

Sex differences in behavioral repertoires are often reflected in the underlying electrophysiological and morphological properties of motor neurons. Male zebra finches produce long, spectrally complex, learned songs and short calls, whereas female finches only produce short, innate, and spectrally simple calls. In both sexes, vocalizations are produced by using syringeal muscles controlled by motoneurons within the tracheosyringeal part of the hypoglossal motor nucleus (XIIts). We asked whether the sexually dimorphic vocal repertoire of adult zebra finches is paralleled by structural and functional differences in syringeal motoneurons. By using immunohistochemical and intracellular staining methods, we describe sex differences in the morphology of XIIts and its surrounding neuropil (suprahypoglossal region; SH). Although the overall number of XIIts neurons and the proportions of somata/neuropil were not sexually dimorphic, the volumes of both XIIts and SH were larger in males, in part because male XIIts neurons had larger somata. In contrast, female XIIts motoneurons had a more complex dendritic structure than did male neurons, suggesting that the larger volume of the male XIIts is due in part to increased numbers of afferents. Intracellular recordings in brain slices revealed that the intrinsic electrophysiological properties of female XIIts neurons were similar to published values for male XIIts motoneurons. We also show that female neurons received glycinergic inputs from the brainstem respiratory premotor column, similar to those described in males. These findings indicate that male and female zebra finches produce their disparate vocal repertoires using physiologically similar motoneurons. Thus, sites upstream of the motoneuron pool may be the major determinants of sexually dimorphic vocal behaviors in this species.  相似文献

Aims/hypothesis Uncoupling protein (UCP) 3 is a mitochondrial inner membrane protein expressed predominantly in glycolytic skeletal muscles. Its role in vivo remains poorly understood. The aim of the present work was to produce a mouse model with moderate overproduction and proper fibre-type distribution of UCP3. Methods Transgenic mice were created with a 16 kb region encompassing the human UCP3 gene. Mitochondrial uncoupling was investigated on permeabilised muscle fibres. Changes in body weight, adiposity and glucose or insulin tolerance were assessed in mice fed chow and high-fat diets. Indirect calorimetry was used to determine whole-body energy expenditure and substrate utilisation. Results Transgenic mice showed a twofold increase in UCP3 protein levels specifically in glycolytic muscles. Mitochondrial respiration revealed an increase of uncoupling in glycolytic but not in oxidative muscles. Transgenic mice gained less weight than wild-type littermates due to lower adipose tissue accretion when fed a high-fat diet. Animals showed a sexual dimorphism in metabolic responses. Female transgenic mice were more glucose-sensitive than wild-type animals, while male transgenic mice with high body weights had impaired glucose and insulin tolerance. Measurements of RQs in mice fed chow and high-fat diets suggested an impairment of metabolic flexibility in transgenic male mice. Conclusions/interpretation Our data show that physiological overproduction of UCP3 in glycolytic muscles results in mitochondrial uncoupling, resistance to high-fat diet-induced obesity and sex specificity regarding insulin sensitivity and whole-body substrate utilisation. Prenatal morphine exposure alters neither the binding capacity nor the affinity of ligand binding to μ opioid receptors of adult male brains. However, males have significantly higherBmax in the hypothalamus than ovariectomized females. In females, prenatal exposure to morphine reduces theBmax of μ opioid receptors 25% in the hypothalamus and preoptic area. Estrogen treatment increases theBmax of μ opioid receptors in the striatum of all ovariectomized females but in the hypothalamus only of morphine-exposed females, thereby eliminating the sex difference observed in control animals.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to study the effects of prenatal stress on nociceptive responses in the formalin test in female and male infant (7-day-old) Long-Evans hooded rats. Prenatally stressed infant rats displayed biphasic flinching+ shaking behavior whereas non-stressed animals showed only a weak second phase. Pain sensitivity in prenatally stressed males was significantly greater than that of prenatally non-stressed males during the second phase only; there were no differences in pain sensitivity between prenatally stressed and non-stressed females. Moreover prenatally stressed male rats pups demonstrated that the second phase of the response to formalin was enhanced relative to the second phase in stressed females. The current and previous data [Butkevich IP, Barr GA, Mikhailenko VA, Otellin VA. Increased formalin-induced pain and expression of fos neurons in the lumbar spinal cord of prenatally stressed infants rats. Neurosci Lett 2006a;403:222-226] show increased tonic pain in prenatally stressed infant rats and a large increase in the number of formalin-induced fos-like immunoreactivity in the spinal cord dorsal horn. There is a concomitant decrease in serotonin-like immunoreactivity in the lumbar spinal cord dorsal horn [Butkevich IP, Barr GA, Otellin VA. Given the decreased level of perinatal testosterone in prenatally stressed rats to which infant males are more sensitive than females, we suggest that these hormonal, behavioral and neuronal indices are strongly interrelated in prenatally stressed 7-day-old rat pups and that the decreased surge of testosterone may contribute to the increased behavioral response in the second phase in male rat pups. Mechanisms underlying the behavioral pain response induced by inflammation in prenatally stressed rat pups are characterized by sexual dimorphism even prior to the activational effects of sex hormones.  相似文献
