Summary The spines of apical dendrites of the layer V pyramidal cells of the area striata in the mouse represent a sequence of post-synaptic structures receiving a variety of contacts from terminal fibers derived fundamentally from short axon cells and superficial pyramidal cells. The study of Golgi preparations of mice 180 days old shows the existence of the most complicated terminal structures over portions of apical dendrites at the levels of layers III and IV. Observations on young mice reveals the terminations of the specific afferent fibers on the dendrites of short axon cells. A mathematical model which defines the distribution of spines along the apical dendrites is introduced. The principal equation of the model has been adjusted from the data processing of microscope countings through a series of programs written for an IBM 7070. The equation defines satisfactorily the different distributions of dendritic spines in mice 10–180 days old raised in normal conditions and in complete darkness. The equation defines also the distribution of dendritic spines in the visual cortex of mice enucleated at birth on one side, and the distribution along the apical dendrites of various cortical areas of the hamster, cat and man. The number of dendritic spines increases with the age of the subject and their distribution varies significantly according to the values of the parameters of the model. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the retraction time, forces, and torques applied to the football helmet during removal of the face mask with different face-mask removal tools. DESIGN AND SETTING: Subjects retracted the face mask of a football helmet mounted to a force platform in a laboratory setting. They removed a standard face mask by cutting or removing (or both) the lateral plastic loop straps using 4 different tools: the Trainer's Angel (TA), FM Extractor (FM), power screwdriver (SD), and Quick Release System (QR) in a counterbalanced fashion. SUBJECTS: Eighteen certified athletic trainers participated in this study. MEASUREMENTS: We started measuring time when the subject picked up the tool and ended when the face mask was in a fully retracted position. Maximum forces and torques were measured from the force platform during the retraction process. RESULTS: The SD and QR retracted the face mask significantly faster than the TA and FM. Forces producing superior-inferior translation were least with the SD. The SD and QR produced less lateral translation and rotation and lateral flexion moment than the TA and FM. The FM produced less torque in the lateral flexion moment than the TA. CONCLUSIONS: Tools that removed the loop straps (SD, QR) were faster and produced less force and torque on the helmet than the tools that cut through the loop straps (TA, FM). 相似文献

The pedicle screw and hook have become popular instruments in treating spinal deformity and disease. This study gathered morphological data on thoracic and lumbar spines in a Japanese population that should serve as useful reference for posterior instrumentation surgery. One hundred and three dry bones were used to investigate the morphology of pedicle and facet in thoracic and lumbar spines. Measurements included the diameter and axial length of pedicle from T8 to L5, height and width of facets and thickness of articular processes from T1 to T12, and axial angle of pedicle from T1 to L5. The diameter and axial length of pedicle were smallest at T8, diameter was largest at L5 and axial length was largest at L3. Height of facets and thickness of articular processes were largest at T12. Men tended to have larger pedicles and facets than women. Transverse angle of pedicle was smallest at T12. These precise data may provide useful information when performing posterior instrumentation surgery and when developing new spinal implant systems for Asians. 相似文献

The case of a 4-year-old girl who developed bilateral brain abscesses complicating skull traction is reported. Crutchfield tongs were used to reduce a fracture dislocation at C2–3. Presenting symptoms consisted of headaches and focal seizures. Surgical treatment and antibiotics using serial CT led to a satisfactory outcome. ObjectiveT2 inversion sequence is used in routine radiology practice mainly to heighten contrast resolution within the region to be studied but no evidence exists in current literature to assess it's true efficacy for lumbar disc degeneration. The objective of this study was to analyse T2 inversion and evaluate it's efficacy in assessment of lumbar disc pathology,.Materials and methodsThis retrospective single-centre study included 50 randomly selected patients presenting with back pain and radiculopathy. T2 inversion sequence was obtained in both axial and sagittal planes in addition to routine sequences. All the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) procedures were performed on 3T. One senior Musculoskeletal (MSK) radiologist, 2 general radiologists and a spinal surgeon blinded to final results reviewed images for the various disc pathologies individually analysing conventional and T2 inversion images. Data was analysed using Fischer's test and Chi2 test with a p value of <0.05 considered as significant.ResultsFifty randomly selected patients (mean age was 47.3 years(range 35–55 years) with back pain and radicular symptoms were included. The spectrum of disc pathologies included protrusions, annular fissures, discal cysts and calcified discs. Based on the above findings, T2 inversion sequence is not proved to be an alternative imaging sequence to routine MR imaging sequences for the depiction of various disc pathologies.ConclusionT2 inversion sequence does not increase the depiction of various lumbar disc pathologies in comparison with conventional sequences when used by experienced MSK radiologists. The aim of this study was to assess the relationships between accident mechanisms as well as initial findings and the long-term course of whiplash injury. A representative sample of 117 consecutive patients referred by primary care physicians was followed-up over 12 months. Fractures or dislocations of the cervical spine, head trauma and pre-existing neurological disorders were exclusion criteria. The interval between the accident and the baseline examination was 7.4 days (SD 4.2 days). Assessment included accident features (e.g. passenger position in the car, head restraint, head position, type of collision), initial symptoms (e.g. intensity and onset of pain, symptoms of neurological dysfunction, multiple symptom score), and signs (restricted neck movement, neurological deficits). At the 1-year examination, patients were divided into an asymptomatic and a symptomatic group and were compared with respect to accident features and baseline findings. Twenty-four percent of patients were still symptomatic after 1 year. Analysing accident mechanisms separately, rotated or inclined head position was the primary feature related to symptom persistence (P=0.005). The symptomatic group scored higher at baseline on the multiple symptom rating (P=0.004) and had a higher incidence of initial headache (P=0.004) and neurological symptoms (P=0.008) together with a higher intensity of headache (P=0.0002) and neck pain (P=0.0009). The following set of initial variables predicted persistence of symptoms at 1 year (logistic regression): intensity of neck pain (P=0.001) and headache (P=0.009), rotated or inclined head position (P=0.02), unpreparedness at the time of impact (P=0.01) and car stationary when hit (P=0.01). This review provides a summary of the cost-effectiveness, clinical utility, performance, and interpretation of screening helical
cervical spine CT for trauma patients. Recent evidence supports the use of helical CT as a cost-effective method for screening
the cervical spine in high-risk trauma patients. Screening cervical spine CT can be performed at the time of head CT to lower
the cost of the evaluation, and when all short- and long-term costs are considered, CT may actually save money when compared
with traditional radiographic screening. In addition to having higher sensitivity and specificity for cervical spine injury,
CT screening also allows more rapid radiological clearance of the cervical spine than radiography. Patients who are involved
in high-energy trauma, who sustain head injury, or who have neurological deficits are candidates for CT screening. Screening
with CT may enhance detection of other potentially important injuries of the cervical region.
