Thirty-four social drinkers who had referred themselves to the Regional Brain Damage Unit for assessment of the effects of drinking alcohol were compared with 42 volunteer control subjects of equivalent age but with low alcohol intake, using two 'learning' tests — the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) and the Austin Button Maze. The Maze Test gave no evidence of disorder, but the two groups were significantly different on the RAVLT. No abnormalities in standard cognitive tests were apparent. These results suggest that a deficit in learning ability may be an early feature of the brain dysfunction associated with excessive alcohol consumption. 相似文献

Vocational training is a key element of professional development in general practice. Learner-centred approaches to teaching bring a need for greater understanding of the individual learning styles and preferences of trainees. This paper reports the findings of a pilot study undertaken to determine factors that may influence learning among general practice trainees. A questionnaire survey of 261 trainees in six regions in the UK was carried out to explore attitudes to a series of themes identified in semi-structured interviews with trainees at the end of their training. Six distinct subscales were identified using principal components analysis. These are named 'Learning from Patients', 'Openness to Criticism', 'Negative Attitudes', 'Desire for Clear Guidelines', 'Peer Support', and 'Academic Approach'. Males scored significantly higher on 'Academic Approach' ( P < 0.05 ). Each of the subscales reflects themes that permeate the atmosphere of general pratice training. Further work is required to establish relationships between the subscales and the outcomes of learning and to explore the implications for continuing professional development. The questionnaire is an instrument that may prove useful in the future investigation of learning in general practice. 相似文献

The tetanic (tta; X.-52.6) mutation has been isolated on the basis of its sensitivity to extradoses of the normal Shaker gene complex (ShC) where the K+ channel la is encoded. The mutant shows up to threefold elevation of the membrane bound protein phosphatase type 1 (PP1) activity in body extracts, probably due to reduced levels of the PP1 specific inhibitor 2 (I-2). By contrast, PP1 activity in the head is only half of the normal value. In addition, tta fails to perform normally in a negative reinforcement olfactory paradigm. The functional relationships between phosphorylation, K+ currents, phosphatase activity and modulation of synaptic activity during learning and memory are discussed in the light of their possible genetic links. 相似文献

The relationships between heart rate (HR) and several parameters of somatic activity were evaluated in human subjects when shuck avoidance was made contingent on either increases or decreases in HR. In order to depict any influence of the contingency specific 10 HR, somatic activity was controlled to varying degrees by instructions and the use of non-contingent control groups. When increases in HR were reinforced, the contingency we found to influence somatic activity but an effect specific to HR was also observed. When decreases in HR were reinforced, there was no evidence that HR were influenced independently of somatic activity. The result are discussed with respect to several current issues. 相似文献

We attempted to determine whether a neutral odor which had become palatable as a result of learning had also acquired the property of activating the mitral cells of the olfactory bulb of hungry rats to the same extent as the odor of their usual nutriment. Male Wistar rats have been accustomed for various times to eat, during a single daily meal, exclusively a synthetic diet, either flavoured or not with eucalyptol. The mitral cell multiunit electrical activity was recorded in chronically implanted hungry and satiated animals. It was shown that: (1) in the rats having received the flavoured diet for one month when grown up, eucalyptol behaved as a nonalimentary odor towards mitral cells; (2) in the rats having received the flavoured diet (already given to the mothers) from weaning to the test period, eucalyptol behaved as a food odor at the mitral cell level, but amyl acetate, a control odor, did not activate mitral cells in hungry animals; (3) the odor of the diet with or without eucalyptol activated mitral cells at first in hungry rats, and this property was reinforced, for either diet, by its consumption beginning early and maintained continuously. It was concluded that palatability is dynamically related to the animal's previous experience, and that its modifications induce various degrees of mitral activation in hungry rats. This property allowed an electrophysiological measure of odor palatability to be proposed. The results are discussed in relation to the behavioral and neurophysiological maturation of animals. 相似文献

Exploratory behavior (GMA) and habituation rate (IH) were studied in an open-field situation in normal and adrenalectomized rats. Following this procedure the rats were subjected to passive avoidance learning (PA). Wide-spreading individual differences were observed in the exploratory behavior and the tendency of habituation of normal rats. As compared to the normal values, either the adrenalectomy which was performed 24 hr, 7 days and 28 days prior to the experiments or the ACTH and hydrocortisone treatment failed to modify the GMA and the IH significantly. An improvement of PA was found in the normal rats following ACTH and hydrocortisone treatment. In the adrenalectomized animals the hydrocortisone proved to be effective, whereas ACTH did not influence PA. No correlation was found between GMA, IH versus PA values and the influence of ACTH and hydrocortisone administration on these parameters. It is concluded that the direction of PA is unpredictable on the basis of the open-field test performed on R-Amsterdam strain of rats, and the effect of ACTH on passive avoidance learning is mediated through the adrenal glands. 相似文献

), which is important for a variety of physiological pathways, including the primary means of inactivating nitric oxide (NO). The role of EC-SOD in neurobehavioral function has been until now unexplored. In the current studies, the phenotypic expression of genotypic alterations of EC-SOD production in mice were characterized for spatial learning and memory. Dramatic impairments in spatial learning in the win-shift 8-arm radial maze were seen in both EC-SOD knockout mice and EC-SOD overexpressing mice. The EC-SOD overexpressing mice were further characterized as having significant deficits in a repeated acquisition task in the radial-arm maze, which permitted the dissociation of long and short-term learning. Long-term learning was significantly impaired by EC-SOD overexpression, whereas short-term learning was not significantly affected by EC-SOD overexpression. NO systems have been shown to be importantly involved in learning and memory. This may be important in the current studies because EC-SOD has primary control over the inactivation of NO. We found that EC-SOD overexpressing mice were resistant to the cognitive effects of L-NAME (NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride), an NO synthase inhibitor. Decreased NO catabolism in these mice may have served to counter the effects of NOS inhibition by L-NAME. The current finding that EC-SOD levels that were either higher or lower than controls impaired learning demonstrates that the proper control of brain extracellular (O

A solution of sucrose either to be drunk from a drinking tube-self-drinking procedure (SD)-or perfused intraorally as a consequence of nose-pokes-self-administration procedure (SA)-or perfused as a consequence of licking an empty tube (LA)-was paired with an LiCl-induced malaise in rats. The effects were compared to those of a procedure consisting of intraoral administration (IO) of sucrose not contingent to any specific action of the rat. Similar levels of conditioned taste aversion (CTA) were obtained but extinction in the IO procedure was quicker than in the SA procedure, which was itself quicker than in the SD procedure. Extinctions in the IO and LA procedures resembled one another and were quicker than in the SD procedure. A step towards deciding between several explanatory hypotheses of these differences was made by conducting two more experiments. The third experiment was based on reinstatement, or not, of the conditioning procedure for the test after standard IO extinction. CTA was produced only when SD was used both at conditioning and test. A fourth experiment was based on latent inhibition where the procedure was changed, or not, between preexposure and conditioning. Latent inhibition was absent only when the rats had been preexposed to sucrose with the SA procedure and conditioned with the SD procedure. 相似文献

Adult, male hooded rats were tested on a six-choice jumping stand apparatus designed to study their ability to perform visually guided orientation movements with a brightness discrimination task. Upon reaching criterion, the rats suffered either one- or two-stage, bilateral electrolytic lesions of the superior colliculi and then, after a brief recovery period, were retested for their ability to retain the preoperatively learned task and, in addition, perform a more difficult task. Although both brain damaged groups evidenced an impairment in comparison to sham-operated controls, the rats with two-stage lesions were less disabled than their simultaneously operated counterparts. 相似文献
