The experiment investigated the effects in healthy volunteers of a single dose of temazepam (30 mg, oral) on effortful and automatic processing, by measuring memory for information and its context. Effortful processing was impaired, as shown by significant impairments in free recall of an 18-item list, but automatic processing was spared, as evidenced by no impairments in recall of the frequency of presentation, the colour, size or form of the items. In a second task, temazepam significantly impaired both recognition and recency memory of 30 items, although these scores were not correlated. Temazepam caused significant sedation, measured by an objective test and by subjective ratings, but this did not correlate with the memory impairments. The pattern of results is discussed with reference to the hypothesis that the memory impairments resulting from benzodiazepines are due to a reduction in information processing resources and thus affect effortful processing more than automatic processing. 相似文献

We introduce an image processing method which reduces white noise and random artifacts in sets of high resolution, time resolved images. At each pixel, the processing consists of: (1) the isolation of a time intensity curve (TIC), (2) Fourier transformation of each TIC, (3) application of a threshold to remove low intensity coefficients, (4) inverse transformation to generate noise reduced TICS which are recombined to form images with improved signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Noise filtering by Fourier thresholding is demonstrated on a set of cardiac images, resulting in a reduction of the noise energy by approximately 90%. 相似文献

This study explored whether benzodiazepines selectively affect aspects of attention and/or visual information processing, as they do memory. A cued visual-search paradigm was employed, using normal volunteers and a single dose of triazolam. This paradigm provided for a detailed examination of two aspects of visual attention and information processing: 1) controlled versus automatic attention allocation (via central and peripheral cues), and 2) the extent to which processing an item in a non-cued location affects performance (via cue-validity). Triazolam, compared to placebo, significantly increased response time, and Drug Condition interacted with Cue-Validity but not Cue-Type. Based on these data, we argue that triazolam doesnot affect attention allocation butdoes affect attentional disengagement and/or attention switching mechanisms. 相似文献

An investigation was undertaken to determine the factors influencing performance of medical students at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kuwait. Data were collected for the first batch of 42 candidates who successfully passed the 7-year medical programme. Results showed high correlations between high-school admission grades and subsequent performance during the medical programme. Similar results were also obtained with English proficiency. A partial correlation controlling for English proficiency, however, showed a systematic decline in the magnitude of the correlations between high-school grades and performance during the medical programme. In fact the relationship between high-school GPA and clinical GPA was non-significant. A prominent influence of English proficiency on performance is indicated. 相似文献

The cells in the primary visual cortex possess numerous functional properties that are more complex and varied than those seen in the cortical input. These properties result from the network of intrinsic cortical connections running across the cortical layers and between cortical columns. In the current study we relate the long receptive fields that are characteristic of layer 6 cells to the input that these cells receive from layer 5. The axons of layer 5 pyramidal cells project over long distances within layer 6, enabling layer 6 cells to collect input from regions of cortex representing large parts of the visual field. When layer 5 was locally inactivated by injection of the inhibitory transmitter GABA, layer 6 cells lost sensitivity over the portion of their receptive fields corresponding to the inactivated region of layer 5. This suggests that the extensive convergence in the projection from layer 5 to layer 6 is responsible for generating the long receptive fields characteristic of the layer 6 cells. 相似文献

Natural Killer cells are likely to play an important role in the host defenses because they kill virally infected or tumor cells but spare normal self-cells. The molecular mechanism that explains why NK cells do not kill indiscriminately has recently been elucidated. It is due to several specialized receptors that recognize major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules expressed on normal cells. The lack of expression of one or more HLA class I alleles leads to NK-mediated target cell lysis. Different types of receptors specific for groups of HLA-C, HLA-B, and, very recently, HLA-A alleles have been identified. While in most instances, they function as inhibitory receptors, an activatory form of the HLA-C-specific receptors has been identified in some donors. Molecular cloning of HLA-C-, HLA-B- or HLA-A-specific receptors has revealed new members of the immunoglobulin superfamily with two or three Ig-like domains, respectively, in their extracellular portion. While the inhibitory form is characterized by a long cytoplasmic tail associated with a non-polar transmembrane portion, the activatory one has a short tail asociated with a Lys-containing transmembrane portion. Thus, these human NK receptors are different from the murine Ly49, that is a type II transmembrane protein characterized by a C-type lectin domain. A subset of activated T lymphocytes expresses NK-type class I-specific receptors. These receptors exert an inhibiting activity on T cell receptor-mediated functions and may provide an important mechanism of downregulation of T cell responses. 相似文献

Cryopreserved human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were tested for natural killer (NK) and antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) and for high-affinity (29°C) and total (4°C) rosette formation with sheep erythrocytes. PBMC produced variable NK activity following freezing and thawing, but consistently reacted well in ADCC. A significant correlation was found between low NK activity and a decreased percentage of low-affinity rosette-forming cells. On the contrary, the number of large granular lymphocytes (LGL), among which NK cells are restricted, and the reactivity with the monoclonal antibody OKT10, which recognizes the majority of LGL in the peripheral blood, were not significantly altered by cryopreservation. Cryopreserved cells proved to be excellent controls for determining the day-to-day variability of the NK assay and for selecting optimum conditions for this test in the clinical immunology laboratory. 相似文献
