BACKGROUND: Earlier studies have shown a high prevalence of respiratory symptoms in farming communities and that storage mites constitute important allergens. We examined risk factors associated with asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis among Swedish farmers. METHODS: A population of 1015 small-scale dairy farmers was part of an epidemiologic survey. After selection based on symptom reports in a questionnaire, 461 of the farmers attended a medical examination, which comprised SPT, RAST analyses, and lung-function measurements. Risk factors for sensitization to different allergens, and development of asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis were assessed by multiple logistic regression. RESULTS: The prevalence of atopy was 26.7% among the farmers. For both asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis, sensitization to mites (OR = 5.8 vs. OR = 3.8) and pollens (OR = 10.3 vs. OR=5.8) was a significant risk factor. There was a significant relationship between sensitization to mites and working time (OR = 5.2). Environmental tobacco smoke and exposure to different animal species at the farm did not appear to affect the risk of allergen sensitization or respiratory symptoms. Farmers smoked less than the general population, but they more frequently had reduced FEV1. CONCLUSIONS: Allergen sensitization, especially to mites and pollens, was significantly associated with asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis in a farming community. Beekeepers are at particular risk of developing work-related musculoskeletal disorders, but many of the studies lack detailed exposure assessment. To evaluate the biomechanical overload exposure in a specific farming activity, a multitasking model has been developed through the characterization of 37 basic operational tasks typical of the beekeeping activity. The Occupational Repetitive Actions (OCRA) Checklist and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Lifting Index methodologies have been applied to these elementary tasks to evaluate the exposure, and the resulting risk indices have been time-weighted averaged. Finally, an easy access, computer-assisted toolkit has been developed to help the beekeepers in the biomechanical risk assessment process. The risk of biomechanical overload for the upper limbs ranges from acceptable (maintenance and recovery of woody material and honey packaging with dosing machine tasks) to high (distribution of the top supers) risk level. The risk for back injury is always borderline in women and increases with exposure time, whereas it ranges from acceptable to borderline in men. The definition of the biomechanical risk levels allows for planning of corrective actions aimed at preventing and reducing the risk of musculoskeletal disorders through engineering, administrative, and behavioral interventions. ABSTRACT Dairy farm operators—farmers, workers, and family members—are faced with many demands and stressors in their daily work and these appear to be shared across countries and cultures. Dairy operators experience high psychosocial demands with respect to a hard work and production ethos, economic influences, and social and environmental responsibility. Furthermore, both traditional and industrial farms are highly dependent on external conditions, such as weather, fluctuating markets, and regulations from government authorities. Possible external stressors include disease outbreaks, taxes related to dairy production, and recent negative societal attitudes to farming in general. Dairy farm operators may have very few or no opportunities to influence and control these external conditions, demands, and expectations. High work demands and expectations coupled with low control and lack of social support can lead to a poor psychosocial work environment, with increased stress levels, ill mental health, depression, and, in the worst cases, suicide. Internationally, farmers with ill mental health have different health service options depending on their location. Regardless of location, it is initially the responsibility of the individual farmer and farm family to handle mental health and stress, which can be of short- or long-term duration. This paper reviews the literature on the topics of psychosocial working conditions, mental health, stress, depression, and suicide among dairy farm operators, farm workers, and farm family members in an international perspective. 相似文献

AbstractThis study provides the first evidence of a direct link between the adoption of a genetically modified (GM) crop and improvements in human health. Estimation of the impact of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) cotton adoption on pesticide use from data from a survey of cotton farmers in northern China, 1999–2001, showed that Bt cotton adoption reduced pesticide use. Assessment of a health-production function showed that predicted pesticide use had a positive impact on poisoning incidence. Taken together, these results indicate that the adoption of Bt cotton can substantially reduce the risk and the incidence of poisonings. 相似文献

ABSTRACT This article explores the potential and the promise of convergence between gerontological and occupational health researchers to better understand challenges faced by aging farmers including declining economic viability of family farms, the aging of the population of working farmers, and probability of work-related injury or disability among older farmers. Although the need for research seems obvious, the economic, demographic, and psychosocial dynamics of continued work among aging farmers is under-studied in the occupational health literature and absent in the gerontological literature. Following examination of studies of aging farmers drawn from the occupational health literature, we review studies of rural aging in the gerontological literature. First, we compare varying definitions of rural across federal agencies that impact the ability of researchers using these data to examine variability across rural places. Next, we review studies based upon primary data that include rural residence among their independent variables. We describe different definitions of rural residence across federal agencies with an eye toward their methodological and conceptual impact on the rural aging literature. Then we describe inadequate and incomplete definition and measurement of rural residence across published studies of primary data. Following discussion of the implications of these shortcomings for rural aging research including farmers and others engaged in extractive activities, we discuss the potential for joint work among gerontologists and occupational health researchers to better understand the significance of aging for transition in the agricultural economy and the viability of family farms. We recommend attention to the definition and measurement of rural residence to include variability in rural farm and non-farm populations and refocusing the occupational health literature on aging farmers to include a life course perspective from gerontological theory applied through longitudinal research designs. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Swine farmers are exposed to a number of airborne contaminants associated with respiratory ill health. OBJECTIVES: To examine the factors associated with healthy worker effect in the swine industry from a longitudinal follow-up of farmers at 4 years and 13 years. DESIGN: A prospective study of swine farmers and nonexposed rural residents was conducted using similar questionnaires and same spirometer at each time point. RESULTS: In the original observations in 1990/1991, we studied 302 swine farmers and 261 nonfarming control subjects. Four years later in 1994/1995, 217 swine farmers and 171 nonfarming control subjects of the original group participated again. In 2003/2004, 163 swine farmers and 118 control subjects were retested. Of the 163 swine farmers, 52 remained active swine farmers and 111 were no longer swine farming, thus providing the opportunity to evaluate work continuity in the industry. Among farmers studied in 2003/2004, mean values for percentage of predicted FEV(1)/FVC ratio and forced expiratory flow between 25% and 75% of FVC were lower in those who had quit swine farming compared to those still swine farming and nonfarming control subjects. The herd size in the barn at baseline in 1990/1991 and at interim follow-up in 1994/1995 was a significant predictor of quitting swine farming. In addition, percentage of predicted FEV(1)/FVC at the interim observation was a significant predictor of quitting swine farming. CONCLUSIONS: There is a significant healthy worker effect among swine farmers. The continuation of work in the facilities may be predicted by herd size and interim lung function. 相似文献

Some of the most important impacts of global climate change will be felt among the populations, predominantly in developing countries, referred to as "subsistence" or "smallholder" farmers. Their vulnerability to climate change comes both from being predominantly located in the tropics, and from various socioeconomic, demographic, and policy trends limiting their capacity to adapt to change. However, these impacts will be difficult to model or predict because of (i) the lack of standardised definitions of these sorts of farming system, and therefore of standard data above the national level, (ii) intrinsic characteristics of these systems, particularly their complexity, their location-specificity, and their integration of agricultural and nonagricultural livelihood strategies, and (iii) their vulnerability to a range of climate-related and other stressors. Some recent work relevant to these farming systems is reviewed, a conceptual framework for understanding the diverse forms of impacts in an integrated manner is proposed, and future research needs are identified. 相似文献

目的:了解上海市浦东新区失地农民心理健康与应付方式状况,并分析其相关性,为制定有关政策提供依据。方法采用简单随机抽样的方法抽取浦东新区两个镇的居民,其中失地农民和非失地农民各600人,运用症状自评量表(SCL -90)和应付方式问卷(CQS)进行问卷调查。收回有效问卷1109份。结果失地农民 SCL -90各因子得分均高于非失地农民,CSQ 各因子中解决问题因子得分最高。 Pearson 相关分析显示 SCL -90与除退避因子外的 CSQ 各因子有相关性。多元线性逐步回归分析显示,解决问题因子是影响失地农民 SCL -90的主要因素。结论上海市浦东新区失地农民的心理健康与应付方式有关,在遇到问题时善于运用解决问题的应付方式。 相似文献
