Healthy Choices for Every Body Adult Curriculum Improves Participants' Food Resource Management Skills and Food Safety Practices

Objective

To evaluate the impact of the University of Kentucky's Healthy Choices for Every Body (HCEB) adult nutrition education curriculum on participants' food resource management (FRM) skills and food safety practices.

Successful Combined Heart and Kidney Transplantation in Patient With Fabry's Disease: A Case Report

Fabry’s disease is a X-linked hereditary disease that causes the accumulation of glycosphingolipids in tissues and organs, including the kidneys and heart. This can result in both chronic kidney disease and cardiac dysfunction, including arrhythmias and heart failure. We describe a case of a 62-year-old male with Fabry’s disease undergoing successful combined heart and kidney transplantation for chronic renal failure and low-output systolic heart failure. The patient has normal cardiac function and normal renal function 7 years after transplantation, while being maintained on enzyme replacement therapy with recombinant human alpha-galactosidase A. Fabry’s disease is not a contraindication for organ transplantation, even in patients presenting with both renal failure and heart failure.     

Selective management of gunshot wounds to the neck. Report of a series and review of the literature.

Thirty-two patients with gunshot wounds to the neck, 13 with multiple pellet injuries and 19 with single missile injuries, were managed selectively. Although 3 of the 32 patients died in the hospital, no death was attributable to the neck injury. This experience and a review of the literature support the concept of selective management of penetrating neck injuries with intervention based on specific indications.     

Facial pain complaints in the elderly

The incidence of facial pain and mandibular dysfunction was studied in a population of elderly, middle-class Americans (median age, 71 years) using a self-report questionnaire. The questionnaire was mailed to 839 volunteer subjects of both sexes; responses were obtained from 562 (67%) individuals. Results showed that 536 respondents (95.4%) were free of facial pain and that only 25 (4.4%) had temporomandibular joint pain. Joint sounds and teeth clenching and grinding were associated with facial pain in 50% of those who reported this combination.     

Inverted follicular keratosis

Inverted follicular keratosis, a benign tumor of the skin believed to arise from the infundibular portion of the hair follicle that can involve perioral skin, has a unique histologic picture. It can be confused with forms of skin cancer; with knowledge of this entity, oral and maxillofacial surgeons may be able to avoid unnecessary surgery. The clinical and microscopic findings of 12 cases of inverted follicular keratosis are reported.
