Driver sleepiness is a major cause of serious road crashes. Coffee is often used as an effective countermeasure to driver sleepiness. However, the caffeine levels in coffee are variable, whereas certain proprietary "functional energy drinks" (FEDs) contain known levels of caffeine (and other ingredients). We investigated the effectiveness of a well-known FED in reducing sleepiness in drivers. Twelve healthy young adults drove an instrumented car simulator between 14:00 and 17:00 h. Their sleepiness was enhanced by sleep restriction to 5 h the night before. Following a pretreatment 30-min drive and at the beginning of a 30-min break, participants were given double-blind 250-ml FED (containing sucrose, glucose, 80-mg caffeine, taurine, glucuronolactone and vitamins) vs. a control drink with the same volume and same taste but without caffeine, taurine and glucuronolactone. Two hours of continuous driving ensued. Lane drifting, subjective sleepiness and the electroencephalogram (EEG) were monitored throughout. Compared with the control, the FED significantly reduced sleep-related driving incidents and subjective sleepiness for the first 90 min of the drive. There was a trend for the EEG to reflect less sleepiness during this period. It was concluded that the FED is beneficial in reducing sleepiness and sleep-related driving incidents under conditions of afternoon monotonous driving following sleep restriction the night before.  相似文献

Both the pineal hormone melatonin and light exposure are considered to play a major role in the circadian regulation of sleep. In a placebo- controlled balanced cross-over design, we investigated the acute effects of exogenous melatonin (5 mg p.o. at 20.40 hours) with or without a 3-h bright light exposure (5000 lux from 21.00 hours–24.00 hours) on subjective sleepiness, internal sleep structure and EEG power density during sleep and wakefulness in healthy young men. The acute effects of melatonin, bright light and their interaction were measured on the first day (treatment day), possible circadian phase shifts were assessed on the post-treatment day. On the treatment day, the evening rise in subjective sleepiness was accelerated after melatonin and protracted during bright light exposure. These effects were also reflected in specific changes of EEG power density in the theta/alpha range during wakefulness. Melatonin shortened and bright light increased sleep latency. REMS latency was reduced after melatonin administration but bright light had no effect. Slow-wave sleep and slow-wave activity during the first non-rapid eye movement (NREMS) episode were suppressed after melatonin administration and rebounded in the second NREMS episode, independent of whether light was co-administered or not. Self rated sleep quality was better after melatonin administration whereas the awakening process was rated as more difficult after bright light. On the post-treatment day after evening bright light, the rise in sleepiness and the onset of sleep were delayed, independent of whether melatonin was co-administered or not. Thus, although acute bright light and melatonin administration affected subjective sleepiness, internal sleep structure and EEG power density during sleep and wakefulness in a additive manner, the phase shifting effect of a single evening bright light exposure could not be blocked by exogenous melatonin  相似文献

Summary A triangular array of 20 electrodes spaced by 1.5 cm was used to record the distribution of current source-densities at 12 locations over the occipital scalp, in response to tachistoscopic presentation of a 1/2° × 1/2° scanning pattern element which explored a 2° × 2° area of the visual field. Single scalp locations had visual receptive fields of the order of 1°–2° in diameter, their shape varying somewhat according to the response in question. Source density analysis can resolve details of the AEP scalp map to better than 1 cm. Even with a 1/2° × 1/2° stimulus, averages of only a few tens of sweeps gave adequate signal-to-noise ratios.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to develop an objective quantitative method for representing the temporal organization of sleep in terms of the period and rhythmicity of REM sleep occurrences. Data on normative human sleep, already scored for stage REM and not stage REM, were subjected to a “binary autocorrelation.” The mean period over 92 nights of sleep for 10 Ss was 101.5 min and quite stable. Data is also presented on variability of the rhythm in terms of an “index of rhythmicity.” Measures of temporal organization may prove to be as significant for sleep research as amount of the various sleep stages.  相似文献

Summary High resolution spectral methods are explored as an alternative to broad band spectral parameters (BBSP) in quantitative EEG analysis. In a previous paper (Valdes et al. 1990b) regression equations (Developmental surfaces) were introduced to characterize the age-frequency distribution of the mean and standard deviation of the log spectral EEG power in a normative sample. These normative surfaces allow the calculation of z transformed spectra for all derivations of the 10/20 system and z maps for each frequency. Clinical material is presented that illustrates how these procedures may pinpoint frequencies of abnormal brain activity and their topographic distribution, avoiding the frequency and spatial smearing that may occur using BBSP. The increased diagnostic accuracy of high resolution spectral methods is demonstrated by means of receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Procedures are introduced to avoid type I error inflation due to the use of more variables in this type of procedure.  相似文献

This research aimed to investigate the time course of the cortical activity level preceding spontaneous awakening as a function of age and state. Two groups of infants (1-4 and 9-14 weeks of age) were continuously monitored by polygraphic recording and behavioural observation during the night. The electroencephalographic (EEG) activity recorded by the C3-O1 lead was analysed through an automatic analysis method which provides, for each 30-s epoch, a single measure, time domain based, of the EEG synchronization. The EEG parameter values were computed in the 6 min preceding each awakening out of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and out of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. The EEG background activity level did not change in the minutes preceding awakening out of REM sleep. Awakening out of NREM sleep was preceded by a change of EEG activity level in the direction of higher activation with different time course according to the age. Both REM and NREM sleep results suggest that a high level of EEG activity is a prerequisite for the occurrence of a spontaneous awakening.  相似文献

目的:探讨宽叶缬草提取物(VOL)对戊四氮(PTZ)致癫大鼠模型的脑电和行为变化的影响.方法:用PTZ 37.5mg/kg腹腔注射Wistar大鼠28天建立慢性癫癎模型,同时胃管分组给予VOL 500 mg/kg、1 000 mg/kg、1 500 mg/kg,每天三次,观察大鼠行为及脑电变化.结果:PTZ致癫癎大鼠在28天时87%为重度发作,脑电发作潜伏期及癎波密度分别为4.01±1.70 min,145.75±19.84个/min ,应用三种不同剂量的VOL治疗三周后大鼠癫癎发作程度明显减轻,脑电发作潜伏期延长,分别为7.36±2.18 min、9.42±2.05 min、11.19±1.95 min,癎波密度减少与PTZ模型对照组比较,P<0.05;且高剂量组更明显.结论:VOL能有效对抗PTZ的点燃作用,且有剂量依赖性,在第3周时才开始显效.  相似文献

The sleep EEGs of 9 young adult males (age 20–28 years) and 8 middle-aged males (42–56 years) were analyzed by visual scoring and spectral analysis. In the middle-aged subjects power density in the delta, theta and sigma frequencies were attenuated as compared to the young subjects. In both age groups power density in the delta and theta frequencies declined from NREM period 1 to 3. In the sigma frequencies, however, no systematic changes in power density were observed over the sleep episode. In both age groups the decay of EEG power (0.75–7.0 Hz) over successive NREM-REM cycles and the time course of EEG power during NREM sleep was analyzed. The decay rate of both EEG power density over successive NREM-REM cycles and EEG power density during NREM sleep was smaller in the middle-aged subjects than in the young subjects. It is concluded that the age-related differences in human sleep EEG power spectra are not identical to the changes in EEG power spectra observed in the course of the sleep episode. Therefore age-related differences in EEG power spectra cannot be completely explained by assuming a reduced need for sleep in older subjects. The smaller decay rate of EEG power during NREM sleep in the middle-aged subjects is interpreted as a reduced sleep efficiency. The results are discussed in the frame work of the two-process model of sleep regulation.  相似文献

本研究提出了利用事件相关脑电复杂度提取大脑运动意识特征,应用Mahalanobis距离判别式分析法,对人脑想象左右手运动任务进行分类,获得了满意的结果。对受试者想象左右手运动期间在大脑初级感觉运动皮层区记录的脑电信号采用复杂度分析方法量化了事件相关去同步(ERD)和事件相关同步(ERS)时程,结果表明EEG复杂度特征较好反映了ERD/ERS变化时程。最后对测试数据进行分类,最大分类正确率达到86.43%,通过最大分类正确率,最大信噪比,最大互信息等评价指标比较,验证了该方法的有效性,从而为大脑运动意识任务的特征提取及分类提供了新思路。  相似文献

The paper presents an adaptive noise canceller (ANC) filter using an artificial neural network for real-time removal of electro-oculogram (EOG) interference from electro-encephalogram (EEG) signals. Conventional ANC filters are based on linear models of interference. Such linear models provide poorer prediction for biomedical signals. In this work, a recurrent neural network was employed for modelling the interference signals. The eye movement and eye blink artifacts were recorded by the placing of an electrode on the forehead above the left eye and an electrode on the left temple. The reference signal was then generated by the data collected from the forehead electrode being added to data recorded from the temple electrode. The reference signal was also contaminated by the EEG. To reduce the EEG interference, the reference signal was first low-pass filtered by a moving averaged filter and then applied to the ANC. Matlab Simulink was used for real-time data acquisition, filtering and ocular artifact suppression. Simulation results show the validity and effectiveness of the technique with different signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) of the primary signal. On average, a significant improvement in SNR up to 27 dB was achieved with the recurrent neural network. The results from real data demonstrate that the proposed scheme removes ocular artifacts from contaminated EEG signals and is suitable for real-time and short-time EEG recordings.  相似文献
