The predictability of individual differences in activation processes was investigated in a multi-method laboratory-field study. Male students of physical education (N=58) were examined under various emotionally activating and physically demanding conditions (mental arithmetic, reaction time, free speech, cold pressor test, bicycle ergometer). The assessment included multi-channel recordings of pre-start phases in an athletic stadium and performance on a 1000 m run. Basal heart rate was also recorded during sleep. This multi-situational assessment was repeated after three weeks, three months, and, for most (N=42) subjects, after one year. Significant relationships exist between scores from corresponding conditions of relaxation, anticipation, and performance of physical exercise. However, with the exception of heart rate, correlation coefficients are rather small and seem to be of questionable predictive validity. A generalizability study further supports the general conclusion: To increase the practical relevance in psychophysiological investigations of stress/strain phenomena, such studies should directly assess individual differences in the criterion situations themselves. 相似文献

Two experiments are reported in which a reduction in tone intensity or duration followed habituation. Experiment I, which employed 120 subjects, assessed the effects of type of stimulus change (intensity or duration) and trial of change (trial 5 or trial 22) on orienting response (OR) recovery. Experiment II employed 131 subjects, and examined the effects of reduction of stimulus intensity on trial 22 or after subjects reached a predetermined habituation criterion. Experiment I demonstrated OR reappearance following the offset of a shortened stimulus. The combined findings of Experiments I and II suggest that the effects of reducing stimulus intensity depend on when the change is made. In Experiment I, reducing stimulus intensity on trial 5 led to a significant decrease in OR magnitude. In Experiment II, increases in OR magnitude were produced by reducing stimulus intensity either after reaching a criterion or after 21 habituation trials. These findings suggest a Sokolovian view of the development of the generalization gradient of habituation. Results also revealed large individual differences in responding to the stimulus change in Experiment II. Multiple regression analyses of these data were therefore conducted, which allowed two further conclusions to be drawn: First, initial electrodermal state can be used to predict responding on the stimulus change trial. Second, with long habituation training (21 trials), the role of the initial state variables diminishes while other variables representing change over the experimental session become more prominent in predicting responding to stimulus change. 相似文献

The geometry of the somata and dendritic trees of motoneurons innervating neck and shoulder muscles was investigated by using intracellular injections of HRP. In general, these motoneurons did not belong to a homogeneous population of motoneurons. Differences in average primary dendritic diameter, number of primary dendrites, and other measures of dendritic tree size were found between different neck and shoulder motoneuron groups. Several indices of proximal dendritic tree size (number of primary dendrites, sum of dendritic diameters, Rall's dendritic trunk parameter, and the sum of dendritic holes) were weakly correlated with the diameter or surface area of the soma. Some of these correlations depended on the muscle supplied by the motoneuron. The total combined dendritic length ranged from 66,660 to 95,390 microns. There was a weak, but positive, correlation between the diameter of primary dendrites and combined dendritic length. This relationship varied from motoneuron to motoneuron. The diameters of all dendrites of three trapezius motoneurons were examined in detail. The total dendritic surface area examined ranged from 415,000 to 488,100 microns 2 and represented approximately 99% of the total neuronal surface area. Last-order dendrites showed a high degree (39.9%) of taper. Dendritic tapering, by itself, was a major factor in the decrease of the (sum of dendritic diameters)3/2 measured at progressively distal sites from the soma. Although few parent and daughter dendrites obeyed the "three-halves law," the average exponent was 1.57. The diameters of primary dendrites and dendritic surface area were weakly correlated. The correlation between dendritic diameter and combined dendritic length or surface area improved if the weighted average of the diameter of second-order dendrites was used as a measure of dendrite size. Second-order dendrites, whose branches terminated in different regions of the spinal cord, showed different relationships between dendritic diameter and combined dendritic length or surface area. Comparisons between the motoneurons examined in the present study and motoneurons innervating other muscles indicate that, although all spinal motoneurons share several common features (e.g., long dendrites, dendritic tapering), each motoneuron group has a set of unique features (e.g., soma shape, relationship between primary dendrite diameter and dendritic surface area). Thus, the rules governing motoneuron dendritic geometry are not fixed but depend on the species of the motoneuron. 相似文献

Aromatase inhibition by delta 1-testolactone (Teslac, 500 mg twice daily) for 6 months in 9 patients with idiopathic oligozoospermia lowered the levels of serum estradiol (E2) and thereby sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) (rS = +0.40, p less than 0.025) to values -35 and -25%, respectively, below the pretreatment values (P less than 0.001 and less than 0.005). The E2 decrease was accompanied by a temporary increase (+50%) in the levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), not of luteinizing hormone (LH), and of 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone (17 alpha-OHP), but less of testosterone (T) (+30%), which led to a transient rise in the 17 alpha-OHP/T ratio. The T/E2 ratio and "free T" index (T/SHBG) almost doubled until the end of the treatment period. During delta 1-testolactone treatment the mean sperm density gradually rose from 8.1 +/- 1.3 (SEM) before to 21.3 +/- 6.7 X 10(6)/ml after 6 months (P less than 0.01), whereas the total sperm count almost threefold increased (P less than 0.05). Sperm concentrations exceeding 20 X 10(6)/ml were achieved in 4 of the 9 patients. Two of these patients' wives became pregnant. Although the data point to a pivotal role of estrogens in the pathogenesis of the spermatogenic lesion in some patients with idiopathic oligozoospermia, the lack of a beneficial effect of estrogen lowering in others points to a multicausal nature of the disease entity. 相似文献

The analgesic ED50 values of some classical morphine congeners (morphine, methadone, fentanyl, azidomorphine) in the rat and mouse tail-flick tests were found to be similar. However, several synthetic derivatives of the natural enkephalins were more potent in mice than in rats. (These analogs contain d-amino acid in position 2 and d- or l-sulfonic (or phosphonic) acid residue in position 5). -Endorpin, d-Met2, Pro5-enkephalinamide and two partial agonists showed intermediate interspecies relative potencies. According to the data obtained, similar opiate receptors might mediate the analgesic action of classical opiates in rats and in mice. However, the opiate receptors responsible for the antinociceptive effects of the above mentioned enkephalin analogues must be dissimilar in the two species examined. The principal reason for this epidemiological study was the lack of psychiatric morbidity studies in a predominantly urban population, by psychiatrists in direct interviews. The psychiatric examination, covering 1970-71, included a representative selection of 2,283 persons, 18-65 years old from "former" Stockholm County, and the 12-month prevalence of mental disorders was measured. The total of non-participants was 12%. Forty-seven percent had a psychiatric diagnosis - significantly more women (54%) than men (40%). Excluding the psychosomatic diagnoses, 31% of the population received a psychiatric diagnosis, which agrees closely with other contemporary studies of mental disorder in the Nordic countries. The primary diagnoses were: neuroses 26%, psychosomatic diagnoses 16%, schizophrenic/paranoid conditions or other psychoses 0.6%, affective disorders 0.2%, psychoorganic syndromes 1.2%, psychopathy 0.2%, character neurosis 1%, drug dependence 0.2% (as a primary or a secondary diagnosis 0.6%), alcoholism 1.4% (as a primary or a secondary diagnosis 3.1%) and mental retardation 0.4% (as a primary or a secondary diagnosis 0.8%). 相似文献

7,8-Dihydroxyflavone (DHF) is a naturally occurring flavonoid that has been reported to protect against a variety of pathologies. Chronic administration of DHF prevents high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity in female, but not male, mice. However, the mechanisms underlying this sexual dimorphism have not been elucidated. We have discovered that oral DHF supplementation significantly attenuates fat mass, hepatic lipid accumulation, and adipose tissue inflammation in female mice. In contrast, male mice were not protected from adiposity, and had a paradoxical worsening of hepatic lipid accumulation and adipose tissue inflammation upon DHF supplementation. Consistent with these sexually dimorphic effects on body weight and metabolic health, 7,8-DHF induced early and stable remodeling of the female intestinal microbiome. DHF supplementation significantly increased gut microbial diversity, and suppressed potentially detrimental bacteria, particularly Desulfovibrionaceae, which are pro-inflammatory and positively associated with obesity and inflammation. Changes in the female gut microbiome preceded alterations in body weights, and in silico analyses indicated that these early microbial changes were highly predictive of subsequent weight gain in female mice. While some alterations in the intestinal microbiome were also observed in male DHF-supplemented mice, these changes were distinct from those in females and, importantly, were not predictive of subsequent body weight changes in male animals. The temporality of microbial changes preceding alterations in body weight in female mice suggests a role for the gut microbiome in mediating the sexually dimorphic effects of DHF on body weight. Given the significant clinical interest in this flavonoid across a wide range of pathologies, further elucidation of these sexually dimorphic effects will aid the development of effective clinical therapies. 相似文献

BackgroundDemographic factors, including age, sex, body mass index (BMI), race, and ethnicity have great effects on the outcomes of patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty. A portion of this data is included in nearly every study, but the completeness with which it is reported is variable. The purpose of this study is to investigate the frequency at which demographic information is reported and analyzed through formal statistical methods in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in the Journal of Arthroplasty (JOA).MethodsA systematic review was conducted of RCTs published in JOA between 2015 and 2019. For each study, we determined if age, sex, weight, height, BMI, race, and ethnicity were reported and/or analyzed. The overall frequency was assessed, along with the rates of reporting by individual year. Studies were evaluated using Cochrane risk-of-bias tool.ResultsAge (96.7%), sex (96.7%), and BMI (80.4%) were reported by the majority of studies. There was very little information provided regarding race (6.2%) and ethnicity (3.8%); although both were reported at the highest frequency in 2019, the final year of articles reviewed. Sex was the most frequently analyzed variable at 11.5%. Only 1 study (0.5%) analyzed ethnicity and no studies analyzed race.ConclusionAlthough age, sex, and BMI are reported at a high rate, RCTs published in JOA rarely reported information on patient race and ethnicity. Demographics were infrequently included as part of statistical analysis. The importance of this information should be recognized and included in the analysis and interpretation of future studies. 相似文献

IntroductionSex differences have already been reported in sub‐Saharan Africa for attrition and immunological response after antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation, but follow‐up was usually limited to the first two to three years after ART initiation. We evaluated sex differences on the same outcomes in the 10 years following ART initiation in West African adults.MethodsWe used cohort data of patients included in the IeDEA West Africa collaboration, who initiated ART between 2002 and 2014. We modelled no‐follow‐up and 10‐year attrition risks, and immunological response by sex using logistic regression analysis, survival analysis with random effect and linear mixed models respectively.ResultsA total of 71,283 patients (65.8% women) contributed to 310,007 person‐years of follow‐up in 16 clinics in eight West African countries. The cumulative attrition incidence at 10‐year after ART initiation reached 75% and 68% for men and women respectively. Being male was associated with an increased risk of no follow‐up after starting ART (5.1% vs. 4.0%, adjusted Odds Ratio: 1.25 [95% CI: 1.15 to 1.35]) and of 10‐year attrition throughout the 10‐year period following ART initiation: adjusted Hazard Ratios were 1.22 [95% CI: 1.17 to 1.27], 1.08 [95% CI: 1.04 to 1.12] and 1.04 [95% CI: 1.01 to 1.08] during year 1, years 2 to 4 and 5 to 10 respectively. A better immunological response was achieved by women than men: monthly CD4 gain was 30.2 and 28.3 cells/mL in the first four months and 2.6 and 1.9 cells/μL thereafter. Ultimately, women reached the average threshold of 500 CD4 cells/μL in their sixth year of follow‐up, whereas men failed to reach it even at the end of the 10‐year follow‐up period. The proportion of patients reaching the threshold was much higher in women than in men after 10 years since ART initiation (65% vs. 44%).ConclusionsIn West Africa, attrition is unacceptably high in both sexes. Men are more vulnerable than women on both attrition and immunological response to ART in the 10 years following ART initiation. Innovative tracing strategies that are sex‐adapted are needed for patients in care to monitor attrition, detect early high‐risk groups so that they can stay in care with a durably controlled infection. 相似文献
