Conventional spatial‐spectral radiofrequency pulses excite the water or the fat spins in a whole slice or slab. While such pulses prove useful in a number of applications, their applicability is severely limited in sequences with short pulse repetition time due to the relatively long duration of the pulses. In the present work, we demonstrate that, by manipulating the parameters of a two‐dimensional spartially‐selective (2DRF) pulse designed to excite a two‐dimensional spatial profile, the chemical‐shift sensitivity of the pulse can be exploited to obtain potentially useful spatially varying fat‐water excitation patterns. A method is presented in which an extended longitudinal field of view (FOV), as required for whole-body MRI or MRA peripheral runoff studies, is acquired in one seamless image. Previous methods typically either acquired 3D data at multiple static "stations" which covered the extended FOV or as a series of 2D axial sections. The method presented here maintains the benefits of 3D acquisition while removing the discrete nature of the multistation method by continuous acquisition of MR data as the patient table moves through the desired FOV. Although the technique acquires data only from a homogeneous central volume of the magnet at any point in time, by spatially registering all data it is possible to extend the FOV well beyond this volume. The method is demonstrated experimentally with phantoms, in vivo angiographic animal studies, and in vivo human studies.  相似文献

Purpose  The aim of this study was to examine whether 20-cm field-of-view (FOV) targeted reconstruction (TR) on contrast-enhanced (CE) chest computed tomography (CT) might improve the diagnostic value compared with simple zooming (SZ) from whole-thorax FOV images using a 2 million (2M)-pixel liquid crystal display (LCD) monitor. Materials and methods  We prospectively evaluated 44 patients. SZ images were magnified from a FOV of 26–34 cm (mean 29.7 cm). Parameters were 512 × 512 matrix and 3 mm thickness and interval. Images were reconstructed using a soft-tissue kernel. Three radiologists evaluated contour, spiculation, notch, pleural tag, invasion, and internal characteristics of the lesions using 5-scale scores. We also performed a phantom study to evaluate the spatial resolution of images. Results  The diagnostic value of the TR images was similar to that of the SZ images, with the findings identified in 88%–100% of the cases. Artifacts from highdensity structures deteriorated the image quality in six (14%), and the SZ images were judged to be preferable in five of them. In the phantom study, there was little difference in spatial resolution between the two images. Conclusion  The SZ images from whole-thorax FOV on CE chest CT were similar in quality to TR images using a 2M-pixel LCD monitor.  相似文献

Continuously moving table MR imaging has been successfully evaluated for whole‐body tumor staging and metastasis screening. In previous studies it was demonstrated that three‐dimensional (3D) slab‐selective excitation with lateral readout can provide very efficient k‐space coverage when the longitudinal field of view (FOV) is limited. To reduce respiratory artifacts, data acquisition in the thoracoabdominal region of the patient typically must be performed during one single breath hold. This consequently restricts acquisition time and thus spatial resolution. In this work, a novel reconstruction method is introduced for axial 3D moving table data acquisition with lateral readout. The method features table position correction completely in k‐space and is compatible with autocalibrated parallel imaging (GRAPPA). Parallel imaging can be applied to increase spatial resolution while maintaining the breath‐holding time. A sophisticated protocol for whole‐body moving table MRI was developed. The impact of gradient nonlinearity on the featured imaging method was evaluated in phantom and volunteer experiments. Finally, the protocol was optimized toward minimizing residual artifacts. Moving table whole‐body MRI with lateral readout was performed in 5 healthy volunteers and was compared with lateral readout data acquired with a GRAPPA accelerated protocol providing increased spatial resolution. The aim of this study was to relate altered corpus callosum (CC) integrity in 106 very preterm (VPT) infants (< 30 weeks' gestational age or < 1250 g birth weight) at term equivalent to perinatal predictors and neurodevelopmental outcomes at two years. T1 and diffusion magnetic resonance images were obtained. The CC was traced, and divided into six sub-regions for cross-sectional area and shape analyses. Fractional anisotropy, mean, axial and radial diffusivity were sampled within the CC, and probabilistic tractography was performed. Perinatal predictors were explored. The Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID-II) was administered at two years. Intraventricular hemorrhage was associated with a smaller genu and altered diffusion values within the anterior and posterior CC of VPT infants. White matter injury was associated with widespread alterations to callosal diffusion values, especially posteriorly, and radial diffusivity was particularly elevated, indicating altered myelination. Reduced CC tract volume related to lower gestational age, particularly posteriorly. Reduced posterior callosal skew was associated with postnatal corticosteroid exposure. This more circular CC was associated with delayed cognitive development. Higher diffusivity, particularly in splenium tracts, was associated with impaired motor development. This study elucidates perinatal predictors and adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes associated with altered callosal integrity in VPT infants.  相似文献

The understanding of sarcasm reflects a complex process, which involves recognizing the beliefs of the speaker. There is a clear association between deficits in mentalizing, which is the ability to understand other people's behavior in terms of their mental state, and the understanding of sarcasm in individuals with autistic spectrum disorders. This suggests that mentalizing is important in pragmatic non-literal language comprehension. To highlight the neural substrates of sarcasm, 20 normal adult volunteers underwent functional magnetic-resonance imaging. We used scenario-reading tasks, in which sentences describing a certain situation were presented, followed by the protagonist's comments regarding that situation. Depending on the situation, the semantic content of the comments was classified as sarcastic, non-sarcastic, or contextually unconnected. As the combination of the first and second sentences represented discourse-level information that was not encoded in the individual sentences, sarcasm detection was represented as the differential activation induced by the second sentences. Sarcasm detection activated the left temporal pole, the superior temporal sulcus, the medial prefrontal cortex, and the inferior frontal gyrus (Brodmann's area [BA] 47). The left BA 47 was activated more prominently by sarcasm detection than by the first sentence. These findings indicate that the detection of sarcasm recruits the medial prefrontal cortex, which is part of the mentalizing system, as well as the neural substrates involved in reading sentences. The left BA 47 might therefore be where mentalizing and language processes interact during sarcasm detection.  相似文献

Neural precursor cell (NPC) transplantation is a promising strategy for treatment of CNS injuries and neurodegenerative disorders because of potential for cell replacement. An important element of future clinical applications is development of a non-invasive procedure to follow NPC fate. We show that neuronal-restricted precursors (NRPs) and glial-restricted precursors (GRPs), NPCs with lineage restrictions for neurons and glia, respectively, can be labeled in vitro with the superparamagnetic iron oxide contrast agent Feridex. Following engraftment into intact adult spinal cord, labeled cells robustly survived in white and gray matter and migrated selectively along white matter tracts up to 5 mm. Localization of cells was reliably established using ex vivo magnetic resonance imaging of spinal cords. Imaging coincided with histological detection of iron and the human alkaline phosphatase transgene in most grafting sites, including the stream of migrating cells. Following transplantation, magnetically labeled cells exhibited mature morphologies and differentiated into neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes, similar to grafts of unlabeled NRPs and GRPs. Interestingly, Feridex-labeled cells, but not unlabeled cells, induced influx of ED1-positive macrophages/microglia. Small numbers of these phagocytic cells took up iron from grafted cells, while the majority of Feridex label was found in transplanted cells. We conclude that Feridex labeling does not inhibit NPC differentiation and can be used to reliably localize NPCs by MRI following engraftment into adult CNS, with the possible exception of areas of rapidly proliferating cells. The present results are relevant for MR-guided clinical application of transplantation strategies in treatment of spinal cord injury and other CNS pathologies.  相似文献

The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) plays a major role in modulating executive control of attention. Here, 15 medication-nai ve patients with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and 10 carefully matched healthy controls were studied with 2D (1)H-magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) of the ACC [Brodmann areas 24b'-c' and 32']. Attentional skills were assessed using the identical pairs version of the continuous performance task (CPT-IP). Analysis of regional brain spectra revealed a significantly increased signal of choline-containing compounds (Ch) in the ACC of ADHD patients (p<0.05). Across and within groups, the Ch signal showed high correlations with slowed hit reaction times on the CPT-IP. No group differences in N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA) and creatine (tCr) were detectable. The combination of performance deficits and elevated Ch levels in the ACC supports the hypothesis that subtle structural abnormalities underlie the functional alterations in ACC activation previously observed in ADHD patients.  相似文献
