Nutraceuticals use and type 2 diabetes mellitus

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a complicated metabolic disease and has become one of the significant medical problems worldwide. Researchers aim to provide fine-tuned treatment for T2DM with minimal exposed side effects. Nutraceuticals are compounds or materials and emerging evidence suggests that the use of nutraceuticals has recently been recognized as a promising option for the prevention and management of T2DM, such as probiotics and prebiotics, Vitamin D, n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, and Plant-derived nutraceuticals. This review attempts to show the most popular nutraceuticals and review their effects and possible mechanisms in the prevention or glycemic control of T2DM.

斑马鱼是一种新兴的脊椎模式动物.在过去的30年中,斑马鱼已被广泛应用于生命科学、健康科学、环境农业等诸多科研领域.为了满足不同的科研需要,研究人员开发和利用各种技术创建了大量的斑马鱼基因突变和转基因品系,这些品系已成为开展相关科学研究的宝贵资源.为了更好地保藏和利用这些资源,在全球范围内建设有多个规模不一的斑马鱼资源库.2012年,我国的国家斑马鱼资源中心(http://zfish.cn)在中国科学院水生生物研究所正式成立.本文将重点介绍全球斑马鱼资源的开发和保藏情况,以及我国国家斑马鱼资源中心的最新建设进展.     

NOISE INDUCED HEARING LOSS IN CHINA:A POTENTIALLY COSTLY PUB-LIC HEALTH LSSUE

Hearing loss and tinnitus are among the most common consequences of long term noise exposure and re-main an under-addressed heath issue in most developing nations including China. The rapid industrializa-tion and life style changes in China increase the concern over noise exposure and noise induced hearing loss (NIHL). Research on NIHL in China is limited. The current paper reviews studies published in English and Chinese language literatures regarding noise exposure and NIHL in China. Their implication on the Chi-nese population is discussed. The possible utility of a research model such as the Dangerous Decibels? as a means to increase understanding of the scope of NIHL among the Chinese population, to educate the gener-al public in China (especially the young) about NIHL and its prevention, and to study effects of language and cultural factors on international information dissemination and behavioral interventions is proposed.     

Genetic Characterization of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N8) Virus from Domestic Ducks,England, November 2014

Genetic sequences of a highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N8) virus in England have high homology to those detected in mainland Europe and Asia during 2014. Genetic characterization suggests this virus is an avian-adapted virus without specific affinity for zoonoses. Spatio-temporal detections of H5N8 imply a role for wild birds in virus spread.     

Characteristics of Patients Infected with Norovirus GII.4 Sydney 2012, Hong Kong,China

Norovirus GII.4 Sydney 2012 has spread globally since late 2012. We report hospitalization of patients infected with this strain skewed toward infants and young children among 174 cases during August 2012–July 2013 in Hong Kong, China. This group had higher fecal viral load (≈10-fold) than did older children and adults.

Detraditionalisation and attitudes to sex outside marriage in China

China has undergone massive socio-economic change over the past 30 years. In parallel, there have been huge changes in social and sexual mores. Until the end of the Mao era strict norms prevailed, with sex outside marriage widely regarded as immoral and unacceptable. Detraditionalisation theory describes the abandonment or reconfiguration of the socio-cultural traditions and has been explored widely in Western settings. This study aimed to explore its relevance for China through exploring attitudes towards premarital sex, extramarital sex, same-sex relations and sex work. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 212 men and women aged 18 to 39 in urban and rural areas of three provinces: Zhejiang, Guizhou and Yunnan. Analysis identified emerging themes. Results show varying degrees of acceptance of the four sexual behaviours, with premarital sex seen as common, homosexuality still regarded as unacceptable by the majority but considerable acceptance of commercial sex work as part of male business transactions and social life. China appears to be on a pathway of detraditionalisation with specific Chinese features. This study suggests that the concept of detraditionalisation applies well to non-Western contexts, but the path it takes is culture-specific and relatively unpredictable.
