Rotation is thought to drive cyclic magnetic activity in the Sun and Sun-like stars. Stellar dynamos, however, are poorly understood owing to the scarcity of observations of rotation and magnetic fields in stars. Here, inferences are drawn on the internal rotation of a distant Sun-like star by studying its global modes of oscillation. We report asteroseismic constraints imposed on the rotation rate and the inclination of the spin axis of the Sun-like star HD 52265, a principal target observed by the CoRoT satellite that is known to host a planetary companion. These seismic inferences are remarkably consistent with an independent spectroscopic observation (rotational line broadening) and with the observed rotation period of star spots. Furthermore, asteroseismology constrains the mass of exoplanet HD 52265b. Under the standard assumption that the stellar spin axis and the axis of the planetary orbit coincide, the minimum spectroscopic mass of the planet can be converted into a true mass of , which implies that it is a planet, not a brown dwarf.  相似文献

AV Nodal Behavior After Ablation. Introduction; The objective of this report is to delineate the atrioventricular (AV) nodal electrophysiologic behavior in patients undergoing fast or slow pathway ablation for control of their AV nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT).
Methods and Results: One hundred sixteen consecutive patients with symptomatic AVNRT were included. Twenty-two patients underwent fast pathway ablation with complete abolition of AVNRT in all and development of complete AV block in five patients. Of 17 patients with intact AV conduction postablation, 12 had demonstrated antegrade dual pathway physiology during baseline study, which was maintained in three and lost in nine patients postablation. Two patients with successful fast pathway ablation developed uncommon AVNRT necessitating a slow pathway ablation. Twenty-one patients demonstrated both common and uncommon forms of AV nodal reentry during baseline study. The earliest site of atrial activation was close to the His-bundle recording site (anterior interatrial septum) during common variety and the coronary sinus ostium (posterior interatrial septum) during the uncommon AV nodal reentry in all 21 patients. Ninety-six patients underwent successful slow pathway ablation. Among these, the antegrade dual pathway physiology demonstrable during baseline study (60 patients) was maintained in 25 and lost in 35 patients postablation.
Conclusion: These data suggest that: (1) dual pathway physiology may persist after successful ablation, which might be a reflection of multiple reentrant pathways in patients with AVNRT: and (2) the retrograde pathways during common and uncommon AVNRT have anatomically separate atrial breakthroughs. These findings have important electrophysiologic implications regarding the prevailing concept of the AV nodal physiology in patients with AVNRT.  相似文献

An increased consumption of energy-dense, nutrient-poor food and beverages as a result of a changing obesogenic environment contributes substantially to the increasing prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity. This paper reviews the nature and extent of food industry influences which expose children to commercial influences and thus might affect unhealthy dietary behaviour and finally contributes to obesity. A systematic search of nine electronic databases (including PubMed, PsycINFO, EconLit) and reference lists of original studies and reviews using key search terms identified 1900 articles. Of these only thirty-six articles met the inclusion and quality criteria. A narrative synthesis of the reviewed studies revealed six key obesogenic environments by which the food industry possibly influences obesity-related dietary behaviours in young children. These were schools, retailers, mass media “television”, mass media “internet”, home and promotional campaigns. Identifying these obesogenic environments is critical for monitoring and controlling the food industry, the development of effective environmental-level interventions to prevent childhood overweight and obesity and to identify knowledge gaps to be addressed in future research to support informed decisions of policy makers.  相似文献

Interactions between interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) and distant cortical regions subserve potential effects on cognition of patients with focal epilepsy. We hypothesize that “healthy” brain areas at a distance from the epileptic focus may respond to the interference of IEDs by generating inhibitory alpha and beta oscillations. We predict that more prominent alpha‐beta oscillations can be found in patients with less impaired neurocognitive profile. We performed a source imaging magnetoencephalography study, including 41 focal epilepsy patients: 21 with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) and 20 with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. We investigated the effect of anterior (i.e., frontal and temporal) IEDs on the oscillatory pattern over posterior head regions. We compared cortical oscillations (5–80 Hz) temporally linked to 3,749 IEDs (1,945 frontal and 1,803 temporal) versus an equal number of IED‐free segments. We correlated results from IED triggered oscillations to global neurocognitive performance. Only frontal IEDs triggered alpha‐beta oscillations over posterior head regions. IEDs with higher amplitude triggered alpha‐beta oscillations of higher magnitude. The intensity of posterior head region alpha‐beta oscillations significantly correlated with a better neuropsychological profile. Our study demonstrated that cerebral cortex protects itself from IEDs with generation of inhibitory alpha‐beta oscillations at distant cortical regions. The association of more prominent oscillations with a better cognitive status suggests that this mechanism might play a role in determining the cognitive resilience in patients with FLE.  相似文献

Integrating information across different senses is a central feature of human perception. Previous research suggests that multisensory integration is shaped by a context-dependent and largely adaptive interplay between stimulus-driven bottom-up and top-down endogenous influences. One critical question concerns the extent to which this interplay is sensitive to the amount of available cognitive resources. In the present study, we investigated the influence of limited cognitive resources on audiovisual integration by measuring high-density electroencephalography (EEG) in healthy participants performing the sound-induced flash illusion (SIFI) and a verbal n-back task (0-back, low load and 2-back, high load) in a dual-task design. In the SIFI, the integration of a flash with two rapid beeps can induce the illusory perception of two flashes. We found that high compared with low load increased illusion susceptibility and modulated neural oscillations underlying illusion-related crossmodal interactions. Illusion perception under high load was associated with reduced early β power (18–26 Hz, ∼70 ms) in auditory and motor areas, presumably reflecting an early mismatch signal and subsequent top-down influences including increased frontal θ power (7–9 Hz, ∼120 ms) in mid-anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and a later β power suppression (13–22 Hz, ∼350 ms) in prefrontal and auditory cortex. Our study demonstrates that integrative crossmodal interactions underlying the SIFI are sensitive to the amount of available cognitive resources and that multisensory integration engages top-down θ and β oscillations when cognitive resources are scarce.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT The integration of information across multiple senses, a remarkable ability of our perceptual system, is influenced by multiple context-related factors, the role of which is highly debated. It is, for instance, poorly understood how available cognitive resources influence crossmodal interactions during multisensory integration. We addressed this question using the sound-induced flash illusion (SIFI), a phenomenon in which the integration of two rapid beeps together with a flash induces the illusion of a second flash. Replicating our previous work, we demonstrate that depletion of cognitive resources through a working memory (WM) task increases the perception of the illusion. With respect to the underlying neural processes, we show that when available resources are limited, multisensory integration engages top-down θ and β oscillations.  相似文献

Inhibitory interneurons expressing parvalbumin (PV) are central to cortical network dynamics, generation of γ oscillations, and cognition. Dysfunction of PV interneurons disrupts cortical information processing and cognitive behavior. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)/tyrosine receptor kinase B (trkB) signaling regulates the maturation of cortical PV interneurons but is also implicated in their adult multidimensional functions. Using a novel viral strategy for cell-type-specific and spatially restricted expression of a dominant-negative trkB (trkB.DN), we show that BDNF/trkB signaling is essential to the integrity and maintenance of prefrontal PV interneurons in adult male and female mice. Reduced BDNF/trkB signaling in PV interneurons in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) resulted in deficient PV inhibition and increased baseline local field potential (LFP) activity in a broad frequency band. The altered network activity was particularly pronounced during increased activation of the prefrontal network and was associated with changed dynamics of local excitatory neurons, as well as decreased modulation of the LFP, abnormalities that appeared to generalize across stimuli and brain states. In addition, our findings link reduced BDNF/trkB signaling in prefrontal PV interneurons to increased aggression. Together our investigations demonstrate that BDNF/trkB signaling in PV interneurons in the adult mPFC is essential to local network dynamics and cognitive behavior. Our data provide direct support for the suggested association between decreased trkB signaling, deficient PV inhibition, and altered prefrontal circuitry.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)/tyrosine receptor kinase B (trkB) signaling promotes the maturation of inhibitory parvalbumin (PV) interneurons, neurons central to local cortical dynamics, γ rhythms, and cognition. Here, we used a novel viral approach for reduced BDNF/trkB signaling in PV interneurons in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) to establish the role of BDNF/trkB signaling in adult prefrontal network activities. Reduced BDNF/trkB signaling caused pronounced morphologic alterations, reduced PV inhibition, and deficient prefrontal network dynamics. The altered network activity appeared to manifest across stimuli and brain states and was associated with aberrant local field potential (LFP) activities and increased aggression. The results demonstrate that adult BDNF/trkB signaling is essential to PV inhibition and prefrontal circuit function and directly links BDNF/trkB signaling to network integrity in the adult brain.  相似文献

ObjectiveIn healthy subjects, the long-term potentiation (LTP)-like plasticity of the primary motor cortex (M1) induced by intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) can be boosted by modulating gamma (γ) oscillations through transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). γ-tACS also reduces short-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI). We tested whether the effects of γ-tACS differ between young (YA) and older adults (OA).MethodsTwenty YA (27.2 ± 2.7 years) and twenty OA (65.3 ± 9.5 years) underwent iTBS-γ tACS and iTBS-sham tACS in randomized sessions. In a separate session, we delivered γ-tACS alone and recorded SICI during stimulation.ResultsiTBS-sham tACS produced comparable motor evoked potential (MEP) facilitation between groups. While iTBS-γ tACS boosted MEP facilitation in both the YA and OA groups, the magnitude of its effect was significantly lower in OA. Similarly, γ-tACS-induced modulation of GABA-A-ergic neurotransmission, as tested by SICI, was reduced in OA. The effect of iTBS-γ tACS negatively correlated with the age of OA subjects.ConclusionsMechanisms underlying the effects of γ oscillations on LTP-like plasticity become less efficient in older adults. This could reflect age-related changes in neural elements of M1 resonant to γ oscillations, including GABA-A-ergic interneurons.SignificanceThe beneficial effect of γ-tACS on iTBS-induced plasticity is reduced in older adults.  相似文献
