The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between avoidance behavior of human subjects and gastric acid changes. An intragastric radio transmitter was employed to record stomach acid secretion rates. The subjects were divided into two groups. The members of the Response-Contingent (RC) group were led to believe that they would be able to avoid a strong electric shock during the Test phase of their session. In the No-Response (NR) group, subjects were correctly told that they would be without means of avoiding shock. The results demonstrated that (a) subjects could not be differentiated according to gastric acid secretion rate strictly on the basis of whether or not they made an avoidance response to an aversive stimulus; (b) a non-significant majority of subjects in both groups exhibited decreased gastric acid secretion rates during the Test phase; and (c) both groups showed a significantly faster rate of gastric acid secretion during the Post-Test phase than during the Test condition. 相似文献

A solution of sucrose either to be drunk from a drinking tube-self-drinking procedure (SD)-or perfused intraorally as a consequence of nose-pokes-self-administration procedure (SA)-or perfused as a consequence of licking an empty tube (LA)-was paired with an LiCl-induced malaise in rats. The effects were compared to those of a procedure consisting of intraoral administration (IO) of sucrose not contingent to any specific action of the rat. Similar levels of conditioned taste aversion (CTA) were obtained but extinction in the IO procedure was quicker than in the SA procedure, which was itself quicker than in the SD procedure. Extinctions in the IO and LA procedures resembled one another and were quicker than in the SD procedure. A step towards deciding between several explanatory hypotheses of these differences was made by conducting two more experiments. The third experiment was based on reinstatement, or not, of the conditioning procedure for the test after standard IO extinction. CTA was produced only when SD was used both at conditioning and test. A fourth experiment was based on latent inhibition where the procedure was changed, or not, between preexposure and conditioning. Fatigue is the most common side effect of chemotherapy for cancer. Not yet explored is the possibility that patients may develop conditioned fatigue responses to clinic cues as a result of the repeated pairing of the clinic environment (conditioned stimulus) with infusions of chemotherapy (unconditioned stimulus) that cause fatigue (unconditioned response). As a first critical test of this possibility, breast cancer patients (N = 82) were studied across their first four cycles of chemotherapy. Consistent with conditioning: (1) fatigue levels in the clinic environment significantly increased with repeated pairings of the clinic environment and chemotherapy administration; (2) fatigue responses in the clinic environment prior to the fourth infusion (CR) were predicted by patients’ previous experiences of post-infusion fatigue (UR) above and beyond effects of concurrent emotional distress. These results provide the first evidence in the literature that fatigue can be conditioned. Additional research is warranted to determine the clinical importance of this source of fatigue in chemotherapy patients. 相似文献

We conducted a two-part study of age and latent inhibition in the rat. In the first part of the study, rats given odor-shock pairings at 23 or 75 days of age exhibited a potentiated startle response in the presence of the odor the following day. This effect did not occur in rats trained at 16 or 20 days of age. Odor pre-exposure on the day prior to conditioning markedly reduced the odor potentiation of startle effect in 23- and 75-day-old rats but had no effect in 16 and 20-day-olds. In the second part of the study, rats were pre-exposed to the odor at 16 or 20 days of age and then conditioned at 23 days of age. When tested the day after conditioning, these pre-exposed rats exhibited a disruption in the odor potentiation of startle effect. We compare our results with other studies of latent inhibition, and with recent studies on whether conditioned responses are appropriate to the animal's age at training or their age at test. 相似文献

Summary Single unit activity was recorded from the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex of two monkeys which were trained on a stimulus-reward association task. The monkeys were trained on a reaction time task overlapped with a classical conditioning paradigm. The sequential events of the task were as follows: (1) lever pressing to start the trial; (2) presentation of a visual cue for 1 s; (3) delay period of 1 s; (4) imperative stimulus presentation; and (5) release of the lever by the animal. The visual cue signaled whether or not a drop of fruit juice would be given (its associative significance) for the animal's release response instead of signaling what response the animal should perform (its behavioral significance). In this task, the animal had to release the lever even on the trial where no juice was given in order to advance to the next trial. A total of 423 units showed activity changes in relation to one or more of the task events, such as the cue presentation, delay, release response and reward delivery. Among 313 units which showed cue-related activity changes, 179 units showed differential activity in relation to the different cues. A majority of them (Type M; n = 120) showed activity changes in relation to whether the cue indicated juice delivery or not, independent of its physical properties. The activity of 13 units (Type P) was related to the physical properties of the stimulus, and the activity of the remaining 46 units (Type MP) appeared to be related to both aspects of the stimulus. Sustained activity changes during the delay period were observed in 68 Type M, in 3 Type P and in 24 Type MP units. The results suggest that the prefrontal cortex plays important roles in the stimulus-reward association and that prefrontal units are involved in higher order information processing, extracting and retaining the associative significance of the stimulus independent of its physical properties. 相似文献

Because prepared learning has been defined in terms of response acquisition in spite of degraded input, it was expected that differences in resistance to extinction between skin conductance responses conditioned to potentially phobic and neutral stimuli would increase with increased interstimulus interval (ISI) and be larger with a trace than with a delay conditioning paradigm. Twelve groups with 10 subjects each were observed in a differential conditioning experiment manipulating ISI (2, 8, or 16 sec), paradigm (delay versus trace), and fear-relevance of the conditioned stimulus (potentially phobic versus neutral). The results showed highly reliable resistance to extinction of first-interval anticipatory responses to phobic stimuli, and no resistance to extinction of the corresponding responses to the neutral stimuli. This difference did not interact either with the ISI or the paradigm factor. Thus, although underscoring the reliability of the difference in conditioning to potentially phobic and neutral stimuli, the results did not support the specific hypothesis of conditioning to phobic stimuli as being less dependent on the ISI parameters than conditioning to neutral stimuli. 相似文献

In two experiments employing 38 rabbits differential classical conditioning of heart rate, blood pressure, and corneoretinal potential (CRP) response were examined using l-sec and 4-sec interstimulus intervals ISI respectively. The conditioned response consisted of HK decelerations and DP depressor responses early in conditioning. However, many, but not all, animals revealed pressor responses and HR accelerations after the CRP discrimination was acquired. Significant correlations were also obtained between BP pressor responses, HR accelerations, and the frequency of CRP CRs. Inverted, cataleptic goldfish showed an increase in ventilation rate over a 20 min period. The time-dependent increase in respiratory movement was initially suppressed when a 10 sec light or a 0.1 sec shock was presented at 1.5 min intervals. Contingent presentation of the light and shock, in a classical conditioning paradigm, resulted in reduced ventilation rates during the session. In a series of experiments, we investigated the effects of pulsed low-level microwave irradiation on amphetamine-induced hyperthermia in the rat. Rats were irradiated in a 2,450-MHz cylindrical waveguide exposure system at 1 mW/cm2, 2 s pulses, 500 pps, average SAR of 0.6 W/kg. Acute (45 min) exposure to microwaves attenuated amphetamine-induced hyperthermia. This effect was blocked by pretreatment of the animals with the narcotic antagonist naloxone. In another experiment, rats were subjected to ten daily sessions of microwave exposure (45 min/session). On day 11, amphetamine-induced hyperthermia was studied in the animals immediately after a session of either microwave or sham exposure. Similar to the acute effect, amphetamine-induced hyperthermia was attenuated in rats irradiated with microwaves (unconditioned effect). In the sham-irradiated animals we observed a potentiation of the amphetamine-induced hyperthermia, which was a conditioned effect of microwaves. Thus, the conditioned effect (potentiation) was opposite in direction to the unconditioned effect (attenuation). No tolerance developed to the unconditioned effect after subchronic exposure. Furthermore, both conditioned and unconditioned effects of microwaves on amphetamine-induced hyperthermia could be blocked by treatment with naloxone. These data suggest that (1) microwave irradiation may activate endogenous opioids, which in turn alter the actions of psychoactive drugs, and (2) the effect of microwaves on drug action can be classically conditioned.

In delay eye blink conditioning, the conditioned stimulus (CS) ends at the time of the unconditioned stimulus (US). If the CS duration is decreased, there will be a 'trace' period with no ongoing CS before the onset of the US. During this period some neural activity has to continue after the CS offset to: (i) permit association between the CS and the US; and (ii) elicit a conditioned response appearing after the CS offset. In this study we test the role of the cerebellum in maintaining CS activity required for eliciting a conditioned response after the CS offset. Decerebrate ferrets were trained in a delay conditioning paradigm with an electrical stimulation of the forelimb as CS and of the periorbital area as US. The conditioned responses in the upper eyelid were monitored with electromyographical techniques. In well-trained animals, test CSs of short duration down to 0.2 ms were applied to the forelimb or the middle cerebellar peduncle, while the interstimulus interval between CS onset and US onset was kept constant at 300 ms. Test CSs of short duration applied to the forelimb elicited conditioned responses. More importantly, also a short-lasting CS to the middle cerebellar peduncle could elicit conditioned responses. The results indicate that precerebellar CS pathways are not required for maintaining the neural activity that elicits conditioned responses after the CS offset. It is suggested that neurons maintaining such activity are located in the cerebellum, either the cortex alone or the cortex and the deep nuclei. 相似文献
