Perceiving faces and understanding emotions are key components of human social cognition. Prior research with adults and infants suggests that these social cognitive functions are supported by superior temporal cortex (STC) and medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC). We used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to characterize functional responses in these cortical regions to faces in early childhood. Three-year-old children (n = 88, M(SD) = 3.15(.16) years) passively viewed faces that varied in emotional content and valence (happy, angry, fearful, neutral) and, for fearful and angry faces, intensity (100%, 40%), while undergoing fNIRS. Bilateral STC and MPFC showed greater oxygenated hemoglobin concentration values to all faces relative to objects. MPFC additionally responded preferentially to happy faces relative to neutral faces. We did not detect preferential responses to angry or fearful faces, or overall differences in response magnitude by emotional valence (100% happy vs. fearful and angry) or intensity (100% vs. 40% fearful and angry). In exploratory analyses, preferential responses to faces in MPFC were not robustly correlated with performance on tasks of early social cognition. These results link and extend adult and infant research on functional responses to faces in STC and MPFC and contribute to the characterization of the neural correlates of early social cognition.  相似文献

AimTo acquire an understanding of the emotional universe of intensive care unit nurses, working in Spain and the United Kingdom.MethodologyThe study used a hermeneutic study design and was set in an academic environment. Participants included nurses with clinical experience in intensive care units. Data were collected from seven in-depth interviews, four in Spanish and three in English. The analysis followed Ricoeur’s Theory of Interpretation. The affective taxonomy Universe of Emotions, served to establish starting categories in it.FindingsSix themes were identified: 1) Critical patient care, critical context; 2) Intensive care… for whom?; 3) Nursing a dying patient; 4) In the company of others; 5) But… is it worth it? and 6) Emotional labour is crucial. These all describe different, multifaceted nurses’ affective journeys, through categories such as: So little time-so much to do, Relatives, Young death vs. elderly death, Poorly-valued work and I'm in the profession I want to be.ConclusionThe sociocultural context shared by the Spanish and English nurses working in intensive care units generates a complex emotional universe, with opposing affective experiences, such as those related to fear, anxiety, sadness, anger, shame, love, surprise and happiness.  相似文献

The medical profession has a marked vocational sense that is closely linked to its ethical dimension. However, there are doubts about the role that undergraduate studies are playing in their development. In order to encourage reflection on this issue, a seminar was held with students and teachers, developed in 3 phases: a) free presentation by students about what they considered to be the medical vocation; b) presentation by professors of the theoretical framework of medical education, followed by the viewing of several scenes of films directed by Steven Spielberg that facilitate reflection on the meaning of the ethical and human components of medicine, and c) open discussion between students and teachers. The main conclusions were analysed: it is worth creating spaces for reflection on the vocational dimension of medicine throughout undergraduate studies. This, in some way, should already be considered in the selection and access procedures to medical school. In the teaching task it is essential that the lecturers are seen as role models, as well as providing individualised tutoring that includes vocational development. Thus, it is necessary to promote training that goes beyond the acquisition of knowledge and skills, paying attention to the management of emotions, the approach to the ethical problems, and the education of attitudes. Early contact with clinical activity, from the beginning of studies is considered a decisive factor to motivate students before the immense theoretical burden they have to face.  相似文献

“Emotional chemobrain” is a new paradigm that relates the occurrence of alterations in the psychological wellbeing of patients to the adverse drug effects of chemotherapy on the neurobiological level. The concept of “emotional chemobrain” is the analogue concept of the classical concept of “chemobrain” but that concerns emotional disturbances related to chemotherapy. Disgust is a negative emotion that might accompany any stressful life event such as having cancer. Increased disgust may lead to the development of mental disorders such as mood and anxiety disorders. Patients with cancer may develop negative emotions such as self-disgust because of their affected autonomy and life style on the one hand and because of chemotherapy's effect on their brain on the other. Self-disgust might be considered as a factor contributing to psychological distress exacerbation in this category of physically ill individuals. In addition to lifestyle modifications and body changes, self-disgust might be exacerbated by chemotherapy in the same way other negative emotions might be exacerbated by this kind of treatment. It might be speculated that the emotional side effects of chemotherapy concern activation modifications in brain regions relevant to emotional elaboration and regulation such as the insular lobe and the amygdala. “Emotional chemobrain” should be considered whenever neuropsychiatric adverse effects of chemotherapy are manifested in patients with cancer. Future studies might be interested in studying the effect of chemotherapy on brain regions that can affect regulation of emotions such as self-disgust.  相似文献

It is proposed that the emotional triggers of comfort food consumption can reliably be predicted by factors tied to affect asymmetry whereby negative affects dominate one's experience, decision making and behaviors in some instances while positive emotions prevail in others. Specifically, we relate three of these factors (age, gender, and culture) to differences in the emotional triggers of comfort food consumption and we further explore the possibility that the type of food eaten during comfort-seeking episodes can also be tied to affect asymmetry. Two hundred and seventy-seven participants completed a web-based survey conducted to assess the emotional antecedents and consequences of comfort food consumption. Consistent with expectations, results indicate that men's comfort food consumption was motivated by positive emotions whereas women's consumption was triggered by negative affects. Consumption of comfort foods alleviated women's negative emotions but also produced guilt. Positive affect was a particularly powerful trigger of comfort food consumption for older participants and for participants with French cultural background. Younger participants and participants with English background reported more intense negative emotions prior to consuming comfort foods. Foods high in sugar and fat content were more efficient in alleviating negative affects whereas low-calorie foods were more efficient in increasing positive emotions.  相似文献

The stronger anatomo-functional connections of the supplementary motor area (SMA), as compared with premotor area (PM), with regions of the limbic system, suggest that SMA could play a role in the control of movements triggered by visual stimuli with emotional content. We addressed this issue by analysing the modifications of the excitability of the primary motor area (M1) in a group of seven healthy subjects, studied with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), after conditioning TMS of SMA, during emotional and non-emotional visually cued movements. Conditioning TMS of the PM or of contralateral primary motor cortex (cM1) were tested as control conditions. Single-pulse TMS over the left M1 was randomly intermingled with paired TMS, in which a conditioning stimulation of the left SMA, left PM or right M1 preceded test stimulation over the left M1. The subjects carried out movements in response to computerised visual cues (neutral pictures and pictures with negative emotional content). The amplitudes of motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) recorded from the right first dorsal interosseous muscle after paired TMS were measured and compared with those obtained after single-pulse TMS of the left M1 under the various experimental conditions. Conditioning TMS of the SMA in the paired-pulse paradigm selectively enhanced MEP amplitudes in the visual-emotional triggered movement condition, compared with single-pulse TMS of M1 alone or with paired TMS during presentation of neutral visual cues. On the other hand, conditioning TMS of the PM or cM1 did not differentially influence MEP amplitudes under visual-emotional triggered movement conditions. This pattern of effects was related to the intensity of the conditioning TMS over the SMA, being most evident with intensities ranging from 110% to 80% of motor threshold. These results suggest that the SMA in humans could interface the limbic and the motor systems in the transformation of emotional experiences into motor actions. Electronic Publication  相似文献

A single case study was done on a low functioning, non-verbal, autistic child, which looked at whether the concept of emotion could be taught successfully. Over a six-month period four emotions were gradually introduced through the use of visual cues taught within an existing home based behavioural intervention programme. These emotions were happy, angry, sad and surprised and were taught using photographs of known people. The participant was tested using novel photographs of familiar and unfamiliar people, which looked at whether he could demonstrate a learnt concept to the novel photographs. The results showed that the four emotions had been learnt and were able to be successfully generalised to the novel photographs.  相似文献
