The anterior hypothalamus-preoptic area and ventromedial hypothalamus are sexually dimorphic in the reproductively active whiptail lizard Cnemidophorus inornatus. The anterior hypothalamus-preoptic area, which is involved in the control of male-typical copulatory behaviors, is larger in males, whereas the ventromedial hypothalamus, which is involved in the control of female-typical receptivity, is larger in females. In the parthenogenetic whiptail lizard C. uniparens, which is a direct descendant of C. inornatus and exhibits both male-like and female-like pseudosexual behaviors, both brain areas are comparable in size to those of female C. inornatus. This study was conducted to determine whether these brain areas change in size in either species or sex during a time of year when these animals are reproductively inactive, or after removal of the gonads. In male C. inornatus both brain areas changed during reproductive inactivity (either seasonally or surgically induced) and became equivalent to the size characteristic of reproductively active female C. inornatus. When corrected for brain size, the anterior hypothalamus-preoptic area was significantly smaller in intact hibernating and castrated males than in intact males from the summer breeding season. Conversely, the ventromedial hypothalamus was significantly larger in intact hibernating and castrated males than in intact males from the summer breeding season. The two brain areas were not significantly different among the groups of female C. inornatus or parthenogenetic C. uniparens. These results suggest that 1) the brain of whiptail lizards may differentiate seasonally and 2) the female state may be a neutral one to which the male brain reverts during reproductive inactivity.  相似文献

Purpose: It was investigated whether alterations in neuronal structure and function occasioned by strabismic amblyopia also may be reflected in alterations in the expression on Y type neurons of a Cat-301 antibody sensitive antigen in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) and cortex of our cat model of strabismic amblyopia. Methods/Results: The percentage of positively labelled cells was reduced in LGN laminae that received input from the deviated eye in strabismic amblyopic cats compared with normal cats. In the strabismic cortex, the density of immunopositive neurons was significantly reduced compared with normal, the effect being most pronounced in layer IV Conclusions: Despite previous physiological recordings indicating a decrease in X-cell associated acuity in strabismic amblyopia, the present findings imply that the changes in the early visual experience occasioned by strabismus also produce specific molecular changes in theY neuronal class.  相似文献

目的:研究用图形视觉诱发电位(PVEP)和离散富里叶变换(DFT)作视力客观估计的方法。方法:检测对象为33只正常眼。用翻转频率为10次/秒,条纹张角分别为30、20、18、12、10、6、4和2弧分的垂直方波光栅图形刺激,记录相应的稳态图形视诱发电位。用离散富里叶交换提取WEP频谱中10Hz成分的幅值。以光栅条纹张角为横坐标、相应的VEP频谱幅值为纵坐标作关系曲线,取阈值附近的近似线性部分的数据点作直线回归,用外推法求得阈值和视力。结果:比较VEP所测之视力与用国际标准视力表所测之视力,可见在本研究中70%的受检眼VEP视力估计较准确。结论:用本研究中的VEP技术客观地测量视力可靠性较高。眼科学报1997;13:59~61。  相似文献

The application of spin-echo magnetic resonance imaging sequences on non-invasive temperature imaging for temperature mapping of human limbs is investigated. In an in vitro expriment performed on a meat sample, the equilibrium magnetisation P and the spin-lattice relaxation time T1 are calculated from the values for the repetition time TR and the signal intensities obtained by a spin-echo sequence at different tissue temperatures tures as measured by a fibre-optic probe. T1 is linearly correlated to the tissue temperature, and P is linearly correlated to the reciprocal value of the absolute temperature. Both effects, taken together, lead to a non-linear dependency of the signal intensity on temperature. Therefore a TR leading to maximum temperature dependency of the signal intensity is calculated and used in the futher experiments. In the in vivo experiments, the lower legs of two volunteers are cooled from outside. Images are acquired with a spin-echo sequence (1.5T, TR=1200 ms, TE=10 ms). A rise in signal intensity in the muscle with falling skin temperature is observed, particularly in more peripheral muscle layers. This study shows that spin-echo sequences can be used to monitor temperature changes and temperature differences in living muscle tissue.  相似文献

The synthesis of nerve growth factor (NGF) by the hippocampus raises the possibility that NGF may play a role in the regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPAA). Subchronic cold stress has been shown to activate the HPAA in a mild noninvasive manner, to stimulate serum glucocorticoid levels, and to perturb NGF binding in hippocampus and basal forebrain. One or repeated episodes of cold stress increased NGF mRNA levels in the hippocampus and p75NGFR mRNA levels in the basal forebrain. These changes were not due to elevated serum glucocorticoid levels since treatment with exogenous corticosterone had no effect on NGF and p75NGFR mRNA levels. Adrenalectomy did not prevent the stress induced increases in NGF and p75NGFR mRNA. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Electrical stimulation of the phrenic nerve afferents evoked excitatory responses in the right inferior cardiac sympathetic nerve in chloralose-anaesthetized cats. The reflex was recorded in intact and spinal cats. The latency and threshold of the volley recorded from the phrenic nerve as well as of the cord dorsum potentials evoked by electrical stimulation of the phrenic nerve indicated that group III afferents were responsible for this reflex. The phrenicocardiac sympathetic reflex recorded in intact cats was followed by a silent period. The maximum amplitude of the reflex discharges was 800 microV, the latency was 83 ms and the central transmission time 53 ms. Duration of the silent period lasted up to 0.83 s. In spinal cats the reflex was recorded 5.5-8 h after spinalization. The maximum amplitude of the spinal reflex discharges ranged from 22 to 91 microV and the latency from 36 to 66 ms.  相似文献

We have previously shown that the morphological and biochemical maturation of developing rat hypothalamic dopaminergic neurons is accelerated when they are cocultivated with pituitary intermediate lobe cells, one of their targets. Only two subsets of hypothalamic dopaminergic neurons (arcuate, A12, and periventricular, A14, nuclei) may project to the pars intermedia. In order to determine whether the two populations are equally responsive to coculture conditions, we microdissected the hypothalamus of 17-day-old rat fetuses in two fragments containing cell bodies from the A12 and from the A14 regions, prepared neuronal cultures from both portions and incubated them separately with intermediate lobe cells. The presence of intermediate lobe cells increased tyrosine hydroxylase levels in both dopaminergic neuron subsets, but morphological differentiation was accelerated in dopaminergic neurons originating in the arcuate nucleus only. We then investigated whether physical contact between developing arcuate neurons and their target cells was a prerequisite of the morphological effect by interposing a semipermeable membrane between cultivated neurons and intermediate lobe cells in transwell culture dishes. The morphological effect was no longer observed under transwell coculture conditions, pointing to the involvement of membrane-bound molecules. Accordingly, the stimulating effect of coculture on arcuate dopaminergic neurons was completely abolished by the removal of polysialic acid on neural cell adhesion molecules by endoneuraminidase N treatment. Thus, maturation of A12 and A14 dopaminergic neurons exhibits differential susceptibility to intermediate lobe target cells, and polysialylated-NCAM is required for the contact-dependent effect.  相似文献

The temporal structure of spike trains recorded from optic fibers and single units of the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) and primary visual cortex of the cat was studied with a novel method of inter-spike interval analysis. ON type relay cells of the LGN exhibited a multimodal interval distribution preferring a distinct interval (fundamental interval) and its multiples during the sustained light response, whereas most OFF cells showed a broad, unimodal distribution. The general pattern of the interval distribution was relatively independent of stimulus size and contrast and the degree of light adaptation. Simultaneously recorded S-potentials originating from the retinal input generally produced only a single peak at the fundamental interval length. Therefore, the multimodal interval distribution of LGN cells seems to be a result of intra-geniculate inhibition. Cortical cells also showed a weak tendency to fire with spike intervals similar to LGN cells. Therefore, the regular firing pattern observed at peripheral stages of the visual pathway can persist at higher levels and might promote the occurrence of oscillatory activity.  相似文献
