OBJECTIVE: To examine children's competence while cycling, as demonstrated in mistakes in performance and failure to comply with safety rules. METHODS: Children in three age groups (8, 10, and 12 years) participated in a realistic yet simulated traffic environment. RESULTS: The boys' cycling speed increased steadily with age, while that of the girls increased from 8 to 10 but decreased at age 12. Most children had adequate motor control by age 10, and the youngest compensated for their less developed skills by cycling slowly and braking early at junctions. Serious mistakes, often related to the children's age and gender, consisted of the children failing to stop at signals or stopping too late, especially at short stopping range. CONCLUSIONS: There are considerable individual differences in children's cycling competence that are related to biological factors, such as age and gender, and psychological factors, such as rule compliance and choice of cycling speed.  相似文献

A developmentally immature sleep pattern has been identified in infants with a recent history of an unexplained life-threatening episode of sleep apnoea who are considered at risk for SIDS. In these infants there is a persistence of Sleep Onset REM Periods (SOREMPS) after prolonged wakefulness when compared to controls matched for age, sex, birthweight and race. The deletion (D) allele of an insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism at the locus for angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) has been reported to be an independent risk factor for myocardial infarction (MI), particularly in people lacking traditional risk factors. Furthermore, a borderline association between Lp(a) lipoprotein level and the I/D polymorphism at the ACE locus was reported in one study. We have searched for possible "level gene" or "variability gene" effects of ACE genes on Lp(a) lipoprotein, total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (HDLC), low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (LDLC), triglycerides (TG), apolipoprotein B (apoB), apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I), and body mass index (BMI). None of these variables differed significantly between genotypes in the I/D polymorphism in any of three population samples. A single population sample created by combining the three series, exhibited an insignificant trend towards individuals carrying the D-allele having a higher level of Lp(a) lipoprotein than those lacking it, and DD homozygotes had a significantly higher Lp(a) lipoprotein level than the combined group of ID/II individuals (p = 0.03). These results may indicate that the D-allele of the I/D polymorphism at the ACE locus could influence the level of Lp(a) lipoprotein.  相似文献

We report a family with two cases of severe pre-eclampsia/eclampsia in which very high levels of Lp(a) lipoprotein were found. The serum level of Lp(a) lipoprotein is genetically determined and the Lp(a) apolipoprotein has a close homology to plasminogen. Very high levels of Lp(a) lipoprotein might interfere with the fibrinolytic/thrombolytic process in man. A previous report suggested that a high maternal serum Lp(a) lipoprotein level can cause fetal growth retardation, and it is proposed that very high levels might lead to increased deposition of fibrin in the uterine spiral arteries in pregnancy, which is central in the pathogenesis of pre-eclampsia. If confirmed, a very high Lp(a) lipoprotein level could be one risk factor for pre-eclampsia that is genetically determined.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to assess the association betweenalcohol drinking before and during pregnancy and the risk ofspontaneous abortion using data from a case-control study conductedin Milan, Italy. A total of 462 women (median age 30 years)were admitted for spontaneous abortion (within the 12th weekof gestation) to a network of obstetrics departments in thegreater Milan area. Of these, 148 (32%) were between the fourthand the eighth week of gestation and 314 (68%) between the ninthand the 12th week. A control group was made up of 814 women(median age 29 years) who gave birth at term (>37 weeks gestation)to healthy infants (Apgar 5th minute 8, weight 3000 g) on randomlyselected days at the same hospitals where cases had been identified.A total of 212 cases (46%) and 355 controls (47%) reported alcoholdrinking before conception. Considering non-drinkers as thereference category, the relative risks (RR) of spontaneous abortionwere 1.2 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.9–1.6] and 0.8(95% CI, 0.6–1.1), respectively, in drinkers of one toseven and more than seven drinks per week before conception.No association emerged between the duration of alcohol drinkingand the risk of spontaneous abortion. A total of 166 cases (35.9%)and 263 (32.3%) controls reported any alcohol drinking duringthe first trimester of pregnancy. The corresponding relativerisk was 1.1 (95% CI, 0.9–1.4) and no relationship emergedbetween the number of drinks per week and the risk of abortion.Likewise, maternal wine and beer drinking in the first trimesterof pregnancy was not associated with the risk of spontaneousabortion. Evidence available from this and previous studies,although partially controversial, indicates that moderate (oneor two drinks per day) alcohol consumption does not increasemarkedly the risk of miscarriage.  相似文献

Haplotypic association of DDAH1 with susceptibility to pre-eclampsia   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Association between pre-eclampsia (PEE1) and the dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase (DDAH) 1 and 2 genes, which play a role in the regulation of nitric oxide synthesis and release, was studied. In a case-control study design single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were determined at eight sites in the DDAH1 gene and at one site (Pro231Pro) in the DDAH2 gene from 132 women with pre-eclampsia and 112 healthy controls. Three SNPs in the DDAH1 gene were associated with pre-eclampsia, showing complete linkage disequilibrium with each other, but none of the associations in the allele or genotype data reached statistical significance in either of the genes after the correction for multiple testing. Haplotype frequencies were estimated using a population based on a maximum likelihood method (EM algorithm). Four common DDAH1 haplotypes were present and a significant association of haplotypes H2 and H3 with pre-eclampsia (P=0.03) was found. The risk of pre-eclampsia was greatest in individuals (odds ratio: 3.93; 95% confidence interval: 1.54-9.99) who had two copies of the high-risk haplotypes (H2 or H3). The observed haplotypic association provides the first evidence of the importance of DDAH1 polymorphisms in pre-eclampsia susceptibility.  相似文献

Abstract

Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is associated with a constellation of complications affecting multiple organs, including neuropsychiatric manifestations (NPSLE) and ischaemic events, leading to increased long-term morbidity. Antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) are a major determinant of vascular inflammation and thromboembolic risk. The diagnostic role of anti-phosphatidylserine/prothrombin (aPS/PT) antibodies in this setting is incompletely defined.

Aim: To verify whether aPS/PT add to diagnostics and disease stratification in patients with SLE with or without other aPL.

Methods: 131 consecutive patients were studied, including 20 patients with SLE and secondary antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). aPS/PT IgG and IgM were assessed through ELISA and patients were stratified based on the presence of other aPL, on their clinical and laboratory features at time of blood sampling and on their clinical history. Synthetic indices of disease activity, chronic damage and cardiovascular risk were calculated at time of venipuncture.

Results: Fifty-one (38.9%) patients with SLE had aPS/PT and 15 (11.5%) patients had aPS/PT as the only aPL (aPS/PT-only). aPS/PT-only patients had a significantly higher prevalence of NPSLE than quadruple aPL-negative patients (p?=?.007). Patients with aPS/PT were more likely to have a history of ischaemia, thrombocytopenia and Libman–Sacks’ endocarditis. The presence of aPS/PT also associated with previous accrual of at least one damage item (p?=?.043), but had limited predictive values for damage progression in the short term.

Conclusion: aPS/PT antibodies provide non-redundant information that could contribute to risk assessment and stratification of patients with SLE.  相似文献

Studies from the last decade on factors influencing reproductive planning after genetic counselling were reviewed. Increased possibilities of DNA-analysis and prenatal diagnosis might have brought about a shift in the paramountcy of factors influencing reproductive planning after genetic counselling. In contrast to the literature in the seventies, the magnitude of the genetic risk was no longer found to be one of the decisive factors in postcounselling reproductive planning. Instead, the interpretation of the risk as high or low and the desire to have children appeared to be paramount. The impact of new developments in DNA-analysis in prenatal diagnosis and presymptomatic testing will be an important subject for future studies on factors influencing reproductive planning.  相似文献
