Two natural populations ofDrosophila melanogaster selected for fast and slow female remating (Gromko and Newport,Behav. Genet.18: 621–632, 1988) were analyzed for correlated responses to selection. Several of the correlated responses differed between the lines derived from the two different source populations. In particular, the degree to which female receptivity to remating was dependent on the number of sperm in storage ceptivity to remating was dependent on the number of sperm in storage remained high in one pair of fast and slow selected lines but not in the other. In the line which retained sperm dependence (JEFFERS), fast and slow remating was achieved by changes in the threshold at which remating occurred. In the other line (COMP) changes in the temporal pattern of sperm use were seen. Thus both the level of the receptivity threshold and the existence of a sperm effect appeared to be selectable features of this species. Mated female attractiveness and receptivity were shown to be genetically distinct from virgin female attractiveness and receptivity. Summary The vestibular signal of head motion in space must be complemented by a neck signal of the trunk-to-head excursion in order to provide the individual with information on trunk motion in space. This consideration led us to study psychophysically the role of vestibular-neck interaction for human self-motion perception. Subjects (Ss) were presented with passive horizontal rotations of their trunk and/or head (sinusoidal rotations, f=0.025 –0.4 Hz) in the dark for vestibular and neck stimulation, as well as for combinations of both. Ss' perception was evaluated in terms of gain (veridical perception of stimulus magnitude, G=1), phase, and detection threshold. (1) Perception of trunk rotation in space. During vestibular stimulation (whole-body rotation) and neck stimulation (trunk rotation with the head kept stationary) the frequency-transfer characteristics underlying this perception were very similar. The gain fell short; it was only about 0.7 at 0.4 and 0.2 Hz stimulus frequency and was further attenuated with decreasing frequency. In contrast, the phase was close to that of actual trunk position. The gain attenuation was found to be a function of the peak angular velocity of the stimulus, a fact, which we related to a velocity threshold of the order of 1 deg/s. During the various vestibular-neck combinations used, Ss' perception was again erroneous, reflecting essentially the sum of its two non-ideal constituents. However, there was one noticeable exception; during the combination head rotation on stationary trunk, Ss veridically perceived their trunk as stationary (compatible with the notion that the sum yielded zero). (2) Perception of head rotation in space. During vestibular stimulation, Ss' estimates showed the same non-ideal gain-vs.-frequency characteristics as described above for the trunk. Neck stimulation induced an illusion as if the head had been rotated in space. This neck contribution was such that, when it was combined with its vestibular counterpart during head rotation on stationary trunk, the perception became almost veridical. On closer inspection, however, this neck contribution was found to reflect the sum of two components; one was the non-ideal neck signal contributing to the perception of trunk in space, the other was an almost ideal neck signal of head-on-trunk rotation. (3) The results could be described by a simple model. In this model, the erroneous vestibular signal head in space is primarily used to create an internal representation of trunk in space. To this end, it is combined with the closely matching neck signal of trunk to head. The perception of head rotation in space is achieved by summing this trunk in space signal with the almost ideal head on trunk signal, again of nuchal origin. These seeming complex interactions have two implications: (i) the head is referred to trunk coordinates, whereas the trunk is referred to space coordinates; (ii) there is at least one condition in the dark where orientation is correct (despite an erroneous vestibular signal), i.e., during head rotation on stationary trunk.Supported by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, SFB 325  相似文献

Eye movements were recorded electro-oculographically in three patients with a small ischemic lesion affecting the left frontal eye field (FEF) and in 12 control subjects. Reflexive visually guided saccades (gap and overlap tasks), antisaccades, predictive saccades, memory-guided saccades, smooth pursuit and optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) were studied in the three patients. Staircase saccades and double step saccades were also studied in one of the three patients. For both leftward and rightward saccades, latency in the overlap task (but not in the gap task) and that of correct antisaccades and of memory-guided saccades was significantly increased, compared with the results of controls. There was a significant decrease in the amplitude gain of all rightward saccades programmed using retinotopic coordinates (gap and overlap tasks, predictive and memory-guided saccades), whereas the amplitude gain of corresponding leftward saccades was preserved. Such an asymmetry between leftward and rightward saccades was significant. In the staircase paradigm as well as for the first saccade in the double step paradigm (with the use of retinotopic coordinates in both cases), the amplitude gain of rightward saccades was also significantly lower than that of leftward saccades. Moreover, in the double step paradigm, the amplitude gain of the first rightward saccade was significantly lower than that of the second rightward saccade (programmed using extraretinal signals), which was preserved. The percentage of errors in the antisaccade task did not differ significantly from that of normal subjects. In the predictive saccade paradigm, the percentage of predictive rightward saccades was significantly decreased. The left smooth pursuit gain for all tested velocities, the right smooth pursuit gain for higher velocities, and the left OKN gain were significantly decreased. The results show, for the first time in humans, that the FEF plays an important role in (1) the disengagement from central fixation, (2) the control of contralateral saccades programmed using retinotopic coordinates, (3) saccade prediction and (4) the control of smooth pursuit and OKN, mainly ipsilaterally. In contrast, the left FEF did not appear to be crucial for the control of the only type of saccades programmed using extraretinal signals studied here.  相似文献

The cardiovascular system was simulated by using an equivalent electronic circuit. Four sets of simulations were performed. The basic variables investigated were cardiac output and stroke volume. They were studied as functions (i) of right ventricular capacitance and negative intrathoracic pressure; (ii) of left ventricular relaxation and of heart rate; and (iii) of left ventricle failure. It seems that a satisfactory simulation of systolic and diastolic functions of the heart is possible. Presented simulations improve our understanding of the role of the capacitance of both ventricles and of the diastolic relaxation in cardiovascular physiology.  相似文献

A method to analyze the fractal system in the time domain is presented so that the dynamic behavior of the system can be studied. The fractal system is represented by a set of linear time-varying differential equations whose order depends on the order of the system under non-fractal condition. Four different types of fractal system are considered and their solutions in the time domain are presented. These analyses show that the fractal system is dynamically more stable with smooth changes of magnitude and less oscillatory than the non-fractal system. Examples of the physiological system of the conduction pathways in the heart and also the polarization phenomena of noble metal are presented to illustrate the phonomena.  相似文献

Summary The rhythm of renal sodium and potassium excretion was measured in 4-h-intervals in 12 subjects. Each person exhibited clear circadian variations of each variable with a maximum between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. In each subject and for both circadian rhythms the oscillation mean was correlated to the range of oscillation (amplitude).Increase in sodium or potassium excretion during 1 day resulted in an increase of oscillation range. The oscillation means of sodium and potassium periodicity did not correlate.The properties of biological control systems with oscillating correcting variables are comparable to those of technical control systems. Summary A little over 40 years ago, anesthesiology in the United States became recognized as a specialty. At that time, its practice was largely that of an art, the science of which was yet to come. A finger on the pulse, observation of color, skin turgor, perspiration, and perhaps a blood pressure cuff in adults, and an estimation of the reflex signs of anesthesia were the standards for the assessment of the patient status and the depth of anesthesia. How far have we come in the intervening years? The journey, as reflected in the experience of one physician, will be held up to the looking-glass; easily as astounding as that through which Alice passed.Caught as we are in the socio-economic climate of the present, how shall we react? Has the gadgetry and electronics of this day given us a meaningful cost-effective handle on a decreased morbidity and mortality? What impact is there on decision-making and outcome? What indeed is the contribution of the machine versus the newer agents, techniques, and the advanced educational milieu.The first attempts at monitoring were clearly directed toward the cardiovascular system. The devices developed were simple and non-invasive. The Riva-rocci method of measuring blood pressure was first applied in anesthesia by Harvey Cushing at the turn of the century. But it was 40 years before the electrocardiogram was introduced as an instrument of potential importance. It took another 25 years for it to have general acceptance, and even later for the anesthesiologist to become comfortable with it as a diagnostic tool. In the early 40s, Peterson, at Pennsylvania, began the applications of invasive blood pressure monitoring for clinical purposes. Subsequently, the use of the central venous catheter, and finally the Swan-Ganz catheter, became acceptable. The application for the technology of cardiac output was a long time in gaining clinical credence. However, this last link surely depended on the computer to make it a clinically useful instrument. The measurement of the cardiovascular system was first, because the means were there.The assessment of respiratory function was more cumbersome, and while the pneumotachygraph was available 40 years ago, its vagaries made it a research tool. Meters for respiration also were available, but too cumbersome for clinical use. The integration of respiratory measurements and blood gas analysis have gone hand-in-hand, the latter far outstripping the former in clinical utility. Shall it be invasive or non-invasive, what is the price? Lastly, our technology has introduced the means for what is a meaningful clinical measurement of neurological and neuromuscular activity. Nerve-muscle stimulators, electromyography, processed electroencephalogram, and the evoked potential as devices for assessment are only the beginning. In all this technological advance there is the black box and the electronic marvels that are part of this age. While invasive techniques surely have a place, the utilization of non-invasive techniques like the measurement of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and all the agents that we employ have changed forever the nature of our practice. Finally, the need to document the anesthesia course objectively will, and has already begun, to impact on our practice. How did we get where we are and where are we going will be explored in this personal journey.  相似文献

目的:探讨电子鼻技术应用于白及及其近似饮片快速辨识的可行性。方法:收集134批白及及其近似饮片(白及45批、天麻30批、玉竹30批、黄花白及29批)作为待测样品,使用PEN3型电子鼻采集样品嗅觉感官数据作为自变量X,基于2020年版《中华人民共和国药典》和地方标准的鉴别结果,以及各饮片高效液相色谱法(HPLC)指纹图谱和原始采购信息,获得辨识模型的标杆数据Y,分别采用主成分分析-判别分析(PCA-DA)、偏最小二乘法-判别分析(PLS-DA)、最小二乘法-支持向量机(LS-SVM)及K-最近邻(KNN)4种化学计量学方法建立45批白及与89批非白及的二分类辨识模型和上述4种饮片的四分类辨识模型Y=F(X)。结果:经留一法交互验证,在二分类辨识中,上述4种模型分类正判率分别为97.01%、97.01%、98.51%和97.01%;在四分类辨识中,这4种模型分类正判率分别为97.76%、89.55%、98.51%和97.01%。二分类和四分类辨识模型的最高正判率均可达到98.51%,且均以LS-SVM算法为最优,最优核函数分别选择径向基核函数和线性核函数。最优模型判别结果良好,没有未分类样...  相似文献
