Transient ST segment elevation occurring without anginal pain. Correlations with Prinzmetal's angina.

Two cases presenting with episodes of marked ST segment elevation occurring with, but most often without, anginal pain are reported. The changes were recorded through continuous ECG monitoring during Prinzmetal's angina and in the course of myocardial infarction. Such transient asymptomatic ECG abnormalities reveal silent acute myocardial ischemia and are often unrecognized. However, they may lead to severe arrhythmias or myocardial infarction, and sudden deaths occurring in the course of ischemic heart disease are likely to be explained on this basis. Transient episodes of silent ST segment elevation similar to those occurring in Prinztal's angina have been reported in various circumstances. They bring into discussion the delimitations of variant angina pectoris.     

A microplate immunoenzyme assay for anti-influenza antibodies.

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using horseradish peroxidase is described for the detection and quantitation of anti-influenza virus antibodies. Compared with complement fixation and hemagglutination inhibition tests, ELISA is far superior with respect to sensitivity and reliability. Non-specific viral inhibitors present in sera do not affect the titer in ELISA. Its sensitivity, close to that of radioimmunoassay permits detection of small amounts of antibodies in pulmonary secretions and supernatants from in vitro spleen cell cultures.     

The Cotard syndrome. Report of two patients: with a review of the extended spectrum of 'délire des négations'

The Cotard syndrome is characterized by the delusion where an individual insists that he has died or part of his body has decayed. Although described classically in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, physical disorders including migraine, tumour and trauma have also been associated with the syndrome. Two new cases are described here, the one associated with arteriovenous malformations and the other with probable multiple sclerosis. The delusion has been embarrassing to each patient. Study of such cases may have wider implications for the understanding of the psychotic interpretation of body image, for example that occurring in anorexia nervosa.
