Objective

To determine the mosquito repellent activity of herbal essential oils against female Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus.

Methods

On a volunteer''s forearm, 0.1 mL of each essential oil was applied to 3 cm×10 cm of exposed skin. The protection time was recorded for 3 min after every 30 min.

Results

Essential oil from clove oil in olive oil and in coconut oil gave the longest lasting period of 76.50 min and 96.00 min respectively against Aedes aegypti. The citronella grass oil in olive oil, citronella grass oil in coconut oil and lemongrass oil in coconut oil exhibited protection against Culex quinquefasciatus at 165.00, 105.00, and 112.50 min respectively.

Conclusions

The results clearly indicated that clove, citronella and lemongrass oil were the most promising for repellency against mosquito species. These oils could be used to develop a new formulation to control mosquitoes.  相似文献

Sensitization to olive oil is seldom reported in the literature. By use of epiculaneous tests a delayed type of hypersensitivity to pure freshly-prepared olive oil could be demonstrated in two patients. Patch tests with certain major constituents of olive oil; the methyl ester of linoleic acid, the glyceryl ester of palmitic acid, the glyceryl ester of stearic acid, glyceryl trioleate and glycerids of arachidic acid, appeared to be negative. In one patient a weak, reaction to balsam of Peru was found, ft is concluded that Sensitization to olive oil must be taken into consideration, especially when it is used as a vehicle in patch testing.  相似文献

The toxicity profile of HIDROX? (Hydrolyzed Aqueous Olive Pulp Extract; OPE) was characterized in a series of toxicology studies. A limit dosage of 2000 mg/kg produced no toxicity in mice (acute oral NOAEL: 2000 mg/kg). In rats, an acute oral NOAEL of 2000 mg/kg was established, based on reductions in weight gains in both sexes at 5000 mg/kg. Reduced gains in female rats at 1500 and 2000 mg/kg were not significantly different from control values. Daily oral dosages of 1000, 1500 and 2000 mg/kg/day for 90 days produced small decreases in body weight gains at 2000 mg/kg/day in the male rats and in all groups of female rats. Feed consumption was comparable to controls. There were no adverse clinical, hematologic, biochemical, organ weight or gross necropsy effects. Focal, minimal or mild hyperplasia of the mucosal squamous epithelium of the limiting ridge of the forestomach occurred in some rats at 2000 mg/kg/day; this change was attributed to local irritation by repeated intubation of large volumes of viscous, granular dosing suspension. A NOAEL of 2000 mg/kg/day was established for the 90‐day study, based on the lack of significant adverse effects. Toxicokinetic data indicated that hydroxytyrosol (HT, the major component of OPE) was rapidly absorbed. Mean concentrations were measurable through 1 to 4 hours (tlast) at 1000 and 1500 mg/kg/day and through 8 hours at 2000 mg/kg/day. Dosages of OPE ranging from 500 to 2000 mg/kg/day did not adversely affect any of the mating, fertility, delivery or litter parameters investigated in an oral rat dosage‐range reproduction study. Adverse effects were also absent in a rat developmental toxicity study in which pregnant dams were treated with 1000, 1500 or 2000 mg/kg/day on days 6 through 20 of gestation. Plasma levels for pregnant and lactating rats were comparable to non‐pregnant rats; minimal levels crossed the placenta. Quantifiable levels were not identified in maternal milk or plasma from nursing pups. A bacterial reverse mutation and a CHO chromosome aberration assay revealed evidence of mutagenic activity at high dosages with S9 metabolic activation. However, three rat micronucleus evaluations performed after single and repeated (28‐day) dosages of up to 2000 mg/kg/day and dosages of 5000 mg/kg/day for 29 days resulted in negative findings; therefore, OPE was not considered to be mutagenic in this in vivo assay.  相似文献

Forty three strains were isolated from knots induced by Pseudomonas savastanoi in different olive cultivars. All the selected bacteria were shown to produce variable amounts of the plant growth hormone indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). Amplification of the intergenic transcribed spacers (ITS) between 16S and 23S rDNA genes, allowed the clustering of the isolates into seven distinct groups. All isolates from ITS group 1 were positive to the Pseudomonas savastanoi pv. savastanoi specific iaa L gene as shown by PCR. Partial sequencing of 16S rDNA gene confirmed the identity of these isolates to Pseudomonas savastanoi strains and allowed to tentatively assign the other isolates from the remaining ITS groups to Pantoea oleae/agglomerans, Burkholderia cepacia, Pseudomonas putida, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and Hafnia alvei. Identification of endophytic knot-derived isolates revealed association of various saprophytic and putative human pathogenic bacteria with P. savastanoi pv. savastanoi in knot environment of olive infected trees.  相似文献

Objective

The ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids can suppress immune system functions. This property may cause adverse effects by impairing host resistance to infection. The present study focused on estimating the impact of different dietary lipids on the immune system of mice after a secondary infection with Listeria monocytogenes.

Methods

BALB/c mice were divided into five dietary groups of olive oil, fish oil, sunflower oil, high-oleic sunflower oil, or low fat that was administered for 8 wk. The mice were immunized with 103 colony-forming units. Thirty-eight days later, each mouse was challenged with 104 colony-forming units. Mice survival and bacterial clearance from livers and spleens were determined. In addition, cytokine, chemokine, and adhesion molecule productions were quantified from the sera.

Results

Survival percentage in mice fed a fish oil diet was 100% and bacterial numbers from spleen were decreased at 72 h. Interleukin-12, intercellular adhesion molecule-1, and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 productions were decreased. Levels of tumor necrosis factor-α and interferon-γ were increased, whereas macrophage inflammatory protein-1α (MIP-1α) production was unaltered.

Conclusion

Immune defense in mice fed a fish oil diet was improved after secondary exposure, acquiring an adequate resistance. This result could be attributable to an increase of a T-helper type 1 response.  相似文献

Introduction: The levels of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) and arachidonic acid (AA, 20:4n-6) are critical for the normal structure and function of the brain. Trans fatty acids (TFA) and the source of the dietary fatty acids (FA) interfere with long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) biosynthesis.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of TFA supplementation in diets containing different proportions of n-9, n-6, and n-3 FA on the brain FA profile, including the retention of TFA, LC-PUFA levels, and n-6/n-3 PUFA ratios. These parameters were also investigated in the liver, considering that LC-PUFA are mainly bioconverted from their dietary precursors in this tissue and transported by serum to the brain. Also, stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1 (SCD1) and sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c) gene expressions were evaluated.

Methods: Male CF1 mice were fed (16 weeks) diets containing different oils (olive, corn, and rapeseed) with distinct proportions of n-9, n-6, and n-3 FA (55.2/17.2/0.7, 32.0/51.3/0.9, and 61.1/18.4/8.6), respectively, substituted or not with 0.75% of TFA. FA composition of the brain, liver, and serum was assessed by gas chromatography.

Results: TFA were incorporated into, and therefore retained in the brain, liver, and serum. However, the magnitude of retention was dependent on the tissue and type of isomer. In the brain, total TFA retention was lower than 1% in all diets.

Discussion: Dietary n-3 PUFA decreased TFA retention and increased DHA accretion in the brain. The results underscore the importance of the type of dietary FA on the retention of TFA in the brain and also on the changes of the FA profile.  相似文献

Aim of the study

Olive (Olea europaea) leaves are used as anti-rheumatic, anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, antipyretic, vasodilatory, hypotensive, antidiuretic and hypoglycemic agents in traditional medicine. Recently, it has been shown that olive leaf extract (OLE) has calcium channel blocker property; however, its influences on nociceptive threshold and morphine effects have not yet been clarified.

Materials and methods

All experiments were carried out on male Wistar rats. The tail-flick, hot-plate and formalin tests were used to assess the effect of OLE on nociceptive threshold. To determine the effect of OLE on analgesic and hyperalgesic effects of morphine, OLE (6, 12 and 25 mg/kg i.p.) that had no significant nociceptive effect, was injected concomitant with morphine (5 mg/kg and 1 μg/kg i.p., respectively). The tail-flick test was used to assess the effect of OLE on anti- and pro-nociceptive effects of morphine.

Results

The data showed that OLE (50-200 mg/kg i.p.) could produce dose-dependent analgesic effect on tail-flick and hot-plate tests. Administration of 200 mg/kg OLE (i.p.) caused significant decrease in pain responses in the first and the second phases of formalin test. In addition, OLE could potentiate the antinociceptive effect of 5 mg/kg morphine and block low-dose morphine-induced hyperalgesia.

Conclusion

Our results indicate that olive leaf extract has analgesic property in several models of pain and useful influence on morphine analgesia in rats. Therefore, it can be used for the treatment and/or management of painful conditions.  相似文献
