“Virginia Woolf's The Waves: A Lyrical ‘Sense of Continuity’ in a Sea of Dissociation”

ABSTRACT

The Waves, written in 1931 by Virginia Woolf, is an astounding depiction of an internal landscape richly full of dissociative phenomena. Although applauded for its genius and considered by many to be her highest literary achievement, critics complained that the language of the characters seemed artificial and a departure from the usual interior monologue appearing in other works that utilized stream of consciousness writing at the time. Woolf believed this work to be misunderstood as she often felt herself. This paper illustrates how The Waves might metaphorically connote the internal experiences of dissociating. The narrative of the novel illuminates the mapping of Woolf's internal system as it changes across a life span. Woolf deftly submerged not only the facts of her personal life in The Waves but, more important, revealed through both her literary method and language the dissociative nature of her own mind. By extrapolating from Woolf's autobiographies, journals, and letters, the parallels between fact and fiction become apparent.     

The Two-Part Film Technique: Empowering Dissociative Clients to Alter Cognitive Distortions and Maladaptive Behaviors

ABSTRACT

This paper describes and illustrates the two-part film (TPF) technique, an intervention characteristic of the Collective Heart model (Krakauer, 2001), a phase-oriented approach to treating dissociative disorders. Emphasis is on the technique's value in interdicting maladaptive interpersonal and intrapersonal patterns which perpetuate depression, anxiety, dissociation, and self-defeating behaviors. The approach is compared with similar internal screen techniques appearing in the hypnotic literature, and distinctive features of the TPF are noted. These include the minimally directive role of the therapist, reliance on the inner wisdom of the client, present and future orientation, and amplification of desired affective and somatic experiences. A verbatim clinical illustration is presented and discussed, with emphasis on the empowering impact of the TPF.     

Analyzing the Patient's First Name in the Search for Identity

A first name captures indispensable information about its bearer, including aspects of the individual's inner world and approach to the environment, the aspirations and attributions of the name-givers for the individual, and the transferences and countertransferences involving the feelings that a first name evokes. A name is therefore a code waiting to be deciphered that, when explored, can reveal its significance to its bearer. A name can impart multiple meanings; the process of interpreting a name is akin to peeling an onion layered in infinite sequences. This article proposes that an examination of the analysand's first name can be a useful clinical tool in psychoanalytic therapy. An exploration into the origin and meaning of a patient's first name through detailed inquiry and association can serve as a rich source of insight regarding relationships between name and self-identity, and can quickly expand the analytic process.     

青少年中华民族认同、国家自豪感与内群体偏好的关系

目的探讨中华民族认同、国家自豪感与内群体偏好的关系。方法选取596名青少年,应用中华民族认同量表、国家自豪感问卷、国民刻板印象问卷分别施测。结果中华民族认同与国家自豪感和内群体偏好有显著的正相关(r=0.34～0.51,P<0.01),中华民族认同和国家自豪感对内群体偏好有显著预测效果(P<0.01)。结论青少年的中华民族认同和国家自豪感可以预测国民印象中的内群体偏好。     

What is the UK Gender Duty and why is it linked to men's health?

Emerging from contemporary UK equality policy, the Gender Duty is not ostensibly about health, although men's health groups are keen to use it to bring about improvements in the health of men. Nevertheless, the status of men's health as an inequality is contentious and any links to equality policy should not be left unquestioned. In this article, I try to develop a critical but supportive perspective regarding the potential of equality legislation for improving men's health by describing the Gender Duty and exploring the links between equality and human rights and men's health.     

Abuse and neglect in adolescents of Jammu,India: The role of gender,family structure,and parental education

The present study aimed to assess the factor structure of the childhood trauma questionnaire (CTQ; Bernstein & Fink, 1998), and use it to describe the prevalence of abuse and neglect in Indian adolescents, and its associations with gender, family structure (nuclear vs. joint), and level of parental education. Participants were 702 adolescents from Jammu in the age range of 13–17 years (41.5% female). We found acceptance for a four-factor intercorrelated model for the CTQ with emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect (5 emotional neglect and 2 physical neglect items) factors following a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Forty-one to sixty-one percent of adolescents reported maltreatment which is higher in comparison with CTQ based studies from the West. Analysis of CFA with covariates (MIMIC model) indicated that males, and adolescents of less educated mothers’ and from joint families reported higher abuse and neglect, and sexual abuse, respectively, while fathers’ education level was not associated with abuse or neglect. Implications of these findings are highlighted.
