A new anthrax vaccine that could accelerate the immune response and possibly reduce the number of injections needed for protection would be desirable in a post-exposure setting.     

Unusual presentations of abdominal tuberculosis: A case series of clinical mysteries

Abdominal tuberculosis is one of the common extra pulmonary tuberculosis with diverse clinical manifestations. It has high disease burden in endemic countries like India leading to significant morbidity and mortality when left untreated. It is of vital importance to treat to prevent significant disease related mortality. We report 4 patients of abdominal tuberculosis who presented with atypical presentations. The aim of our case series is to know the uncommon presentations of a common disease.     

Toxic trace elements at gastrointestinal level

Many trace elements are considered essential [iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu)], whereas others may be harmful [lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), arsenic (As)], depending on their concentration and chemical form. In most cases, the diet is the main pathway by which they enter our organism. The presence of toxic trace elements in food has been known for a long time, and many of the food matrices that carry them have been identified. This has led to the appearance of legislation and recommendations concerning consumption. Given that the main route of exposure is oral, passage through the gastrointestinal tract plays a fundamental role in their entry into the organism, where they exert their toxic effect. Although the digestive system can be considered to be of crucial importance in their toxicity, in most cases we do not know the events that occur during the passage of these elements through the gastrointestinal tract and of ascertaining whether they may have some kind of toxic effect on it. The aim of this review is to summarize available information on this subject, concentrating on the toxic trace elements that are of greatest interest for organizations concerned with food safety and health: Pb, Cd, Hg and As.     

Gastrointestinal symptoms associated with enteric-coated sulfasalazine (Azulfidine EN tablets)

 To investigate both the incidence and the dosage used to treat gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms associated with enteric-coated sulfasalazine (Azulfidine EN, AZL) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), we studied the clinical history of 153 RA patients, and any available data on GI symptoms that might have been associated with AZL. GI symptoms appeared in 64 (42.5%) of the 153 cases. There were 19 events of nausea, vomiting, or dyspepsia, 14 events each of epigastric discomfort and reduction or loss of appetite, 10 events of epigastric, stomach, or abdominal pain, 9 events of heartburn, 8 events of mouth ulcer, 3 events each of loss of taste and abdominal bloating or borborygmus, 2 events each of diarrhea or loose stools, hematemesis or melanemia, and gastric or esophageal ulcer, and 1 event of stomatitis. These results indicate that GI symptoms associated with AZL are usually mild and treatment can continue, with almost all cases responding to a reduction in dose or drug cessation.
