The aim of this study was to determine the number and size of apical non-myelinated (C) axons of healthy human premolars. The material was derived from a large collection of specimens prepared for a previous quantitative investigation on the myelinated (A) axons of human premolars. A total of 16 teeth (six maxillary first and five each of mandibular first and second premolars), removed from adolescents for orthodontic reasons, were used. Root discs of about 0.6 mm thickness were prepared at about 2 mm cervical to the root apex and processed for light and electron microscopy. The number of non-myelinated axons was determined by taking a total census of such fibres that could be identified and reconstructed by standardized composite electron micrographs from each root disc. The measurement of axons was done on a statistically representative sample of axons (n=1810) using an electronic image processing unit. The 16 teeth had an average of 2000 ± 1023 non-myelinated axons at the juxta-apical level (range 534–3912). The average diameter of the non-myelinated axons was found to be 0.5 ± 0.4 m (range 0.05–2.4 m). 相似文献

Summary The primary objective of this study was to determine the number and size of myelinated nerve fibers at the subcervical, midroot and juxta-apical levels of human premolars. Sixty-seven healthy premolars extracted from adolescents were utilized. Root-discs were prepared from the three sites and processed for light and electron microscopy. The myelinated nerve fibers were counted from semithin sections using a sampling microscope. The measurements were taken from composite electron micrographs using an electronic image processing unit. A total of 1883 myelinated axons from seven mandibular second premolars was gauged. The 67 teeth had an average of 312±149 myelinated nerve fibers at the juxta-apical level (range 18 to 728). The contra- and ipsilateral differences in means among the four groups of premolars were not significant (P>0.05). The number of nerves increased significantly (P<0.05) toward midroot and subcervical (P<0.001) levels in all groups. The average neural diameter was 3.51.0 m at the juxta-apical level, and the between-teeth difference in mean was found to be significant (P<0.01). There was no decline (P>0.05) in the diameter of myelinated nerve fibers toward midroot and subcervical levels. 相似文献

This in vitro study investigated the effect of sodium trimetaphosphate (TMP), added to toothpaste containing 250 p.p.m. fluoride, on enamel demineralization. Bovine enamel blocks (n = 96) were subjected to five pH cycles over a 7‐d period and treatment with suspensions of toothpastes containing 0, 250, 500, and 1,100 p.p.m. fluoride (as sodium fluoride), as well as with 250 p.p.m. fluoride containing TMP at 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, and 3.0%. Treatment with toothpaste suspensions was performed under agitation twice a day, for 1 min. Surface and cross‐sectional hardness, and fluoride firmly bound to enamel, were quantified. Data were subjected to one‐way anova , followed by Tukey's test. Low‐fluoride toothpastes containing TMP at 0.25–1.0% resulted in enamel mineral loss similar to that seen for the toothpaste containing 1,100 p.p.m. fluoride. Also, the addition of TMP to the toothpaste containing 250 p.p.m. fluoride promoted enamel fluoride concentrations similar to those obtained for the 500 p.p.m. fluoride group. The toothpaste containing 250 p.p.m. fluoride and 0.25% TMP led to the lowest mineral loss among all groups. It was concluded that the addition of as little as 0.25% TMP to a toothpaste containing 250 p.p.m. fluoride can reduce enamel demineralization to levels similar to those seen for a conventional toothpaste containing 1,100 p.p.m. fluoride, in vitro. 相似文献

Knowledge of impairments, wishes and expectations is essential to make correct decisions regarding oral rehabilitation. The purpose of this study was to investigate discomforts, wishes and expectations in patients’ with partial edentulism before entering oral rehabilitation. In Copenhagen, Denmark, and Malmö, Sweden, respectively, 20 patients with partial edentulism seeking rehabilitation were interviewed in a semistructured qualitative manner. The interviews were transcribed and analysed yielding overall domains. Six themes appeared as overall domains: (i) experienced impairments, (ii) experienced social awareness, (iii) expectation to treatment, (iv) expectation to durability/survival, (v) coping strategies dealing with the tooth loss including explanations of the tooth loss and (vi) modifications to experienced impairment. The impairments were mostly experienced as problems in social settings. Most participants expressed a simple wish to function normally; a fixed solution was preferred. Many Danish participants accepted a removable solution whereas only few Swedish participants did so. The domains ‘coping strategies’ and ‘modifications’ were not part of the chosen topics of interest, indicating a high wish of the participants to explain their tooth loss and how they coped with it. In conclusion, a large degree of social impairment was found in the patient group along with several coping strategies. The impairments were modified by a number of factors indicating that highly individualised care and treatment is needed. A state of normality was described as the primary treatment wish with a higher acceptance of removable solutions in Denmark than in Sweden. For final decision‐making, surrounding factors seemed to influence the patients’ choices. 相似文献

Minimally invasive endodontics emphasizes preservation of a maximal amount of healthy tooth tissue. However, whether the tooth structure preserved by minimally invasive endodontics can maintain higher fracture resistance is unclear. This study aimed to compare the biomechanics on teeth after minimally invasive (MI) preparation and straight‐line (SL) preparation using finite element analysis. Six finite element analysis models of a mandibular first molar were constructed and divided into two groups (MI and SL). Two loads of 250 N, one vertically stimulating the vertical masticatory force and the other given 45° to the longitudinal axis of the tooth, were applied. Stresses in the teeth were calculated and analyzed. Under both vertical and 45° loads, the greatest stresses were located at the margin of the cavities on the occlusal surfaces. The stress concentration areas of teeth with minimally invasive access cavities were smaller than those of teeth prepared with straight‐line opening in coronal and cervical areas. The stress concentration points in the cervical areas increased with the increase of canal taper in the coronal third. Minimally invasive access preparation reduced the stress distribution in crown and cervical regions. A smaller taper cervical enlargement caused lower stress in the cervical region. 相似文献

Previous studies have shown the role of cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions in the differentiation of the specific secretory cells of the tooth. In order to elucidate the mechanisms implicated in root dentin formation, we developed a co-culture system of human pulpal mesenchymal and epithelial root sheath cells. Root tips of premolars were cultured in Eagle's basal Medium supplemented with fetal calf serum, ascorbic acid, antibiotics and, for some of them, with sodium β-glycerophosphate. After 60 days of culture, cells were prepared for light and electron microscopy. Three main cell types were observed: (1) polygonal mesenchymal cells showing a functional polarity and producing a dense network of tactoid collagenous fibers. The latter had a specific circular organization that delimited small lacunae around the cells and mineralized in the presence of β-glycerophosphate; (2) spindle-shaped mesenchymal cells mainly localized inside epithelial-mesenchymal knots and synthesizing an abundant collagenous matrix; and (3) epithelial cells lying on the plastic culture dish, on the dense collagenous matrix, or on spindle-shaped cells. Epithelial cells deposited a structured basement membrane when they were lying on the plastic culture dish or on spindle-shaped cells. On the contrary, no basement membrane was found when epithelial cells were overlying the dense collagenous network. Immunoelectron microscopic analysis of type IV collagen and laminin indicated that these two specific basement membrane components were produced by all cell types. These results show that the co-culture system should be valuable for (1) studying the in vitro formation of human dental root hard tissues, (2) characterizing cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions implicated in dental basement membrane production, and (3) isolating populations of cells implicated in dental root formation. 相似文献
