Background Children with an intellectual disability (ID) have complex health needs that extend beyond the expected cognitive deficits, affecting a myriad of developmental domains. These children frequently receive inadequate health care such that their needs remain poorly managed.Methods Staff from the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network (N?=?160) completed a survey on attitudes, experiences, and training satisfaction when working with patients with ID. The 48-question needs analysis survey was distributed electronically to staff from a variety of disciplines and experience levels.Results Although staff considered themselves broadly competent in caring for children with ID, they were less confident in specific skills, such as managing associated challenging behaviours in the clinic. As confidence in skills such as these decreased, the desire for further training increased.Conclusion This study emphasises the importance of providing accessible, high-quality professional development resources to further develop these skills. 相似文献

Objectives
To explore the disclosure decisions made in the workplace by physiotherapy staff with a specific learning difficulty (SpLD).Design & setting
An exploratory qualitative design was used, which was informed by the social model of disability. The research was undertaken in North West England. It is presented according to the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research.Participants
A purposive sample of eight physiotherapists recognised as having a SpLD were recruited. All participants had studied on one of two programmes at a university in England between 2004–2012. Their NHS workplace experience was from across the UK.Data generation
In-depth, semi-structured interviews were undertaken within the university setting or via telephone. Interviews lasted 40 to 70 minutes and were digitally recorded. An interview guide was used to direct the interview.Data analysis
Interview data were transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis.Findings
Four participants were female. The mean number of years qualified as a physiotherapist was 4.5 years (SD = 2.27). Three themes were identified: ‘Disclosing during the workplace application’; ‘Positive about disabled people scheme’; ‘Disclosing in the workplace’.Conclusions
Disclosure of dyslexia is a selective process and is a central dilemma in the lives of individuals who have a concealable stigmatised identity. As a consequence, physiotherapy staff with dyslexia may choose to conceal their disability and not disclose to their employer. OBJECTIVES: All dental surgeons should be protected from hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection by immunisation, ideally administered and monitored via occupational health services (OHS). This study examined relevant OHS systems in place for dental primary care healthcare workers (DHCW) across all Health Board Areas (HBAs) in Scotland. It also explored the DHCWs' knowledge of, and access to, these systems in three HBAs. METHODS: Data from senior staff in all Scottish Health Boards and Primary Care Trusts were collected by self-completing questionnaires. Information from DHCWs was collected via telephone interviews with General Dental Practitioners (GDPs) and Community Dental Officers (CDOs) in each of Ayrshire and Arran, Highland and Lothian Health Boards. RESULTS: Thirteen of the 15 HBAs had robust HBV vaccination and monitoring systems. However, only 7/15 (47%) of these covered all DHCWs. Seven HBAs provided vaccination and monitoring for CDOs only, leaving GDPs to undertake these responsibilities for themselves. Of the 105 DHCWs approached, 82 gave an interview. These interviews highlighted major differences between HBAs in relation to access of DHCWs to OHS and indicated that CDOs had greater access than GDPs to OHS. Overall, 31% of DHCWs were not satisfied with the OHS available. CONCLUSION: In order to safeguard both staff and patients, significant further work is required to ensure that all DHCWs have access to appropriate OHS support for provision and monitoring of immunisation procedures and related functions such as management of sharps injuries. 相似文献
