The extent to which individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) show lability in optimism was explored in the present study. The relationship between optimism and perceived disease severity was examined as well. Twelve individuals diagnosed with PD completed self-report measures for 70 consecutive days. All individuals in this study showed lability in optimism over short time periods; however, 67% of the sample showed no pervasive negative changes in optimism over time. Increased levels of optimism on one day were predictive of decreased perceived disease severity the next day for one-fourth of the sample, after controlling for negative affect. Individual differences in the relationship between optimism and disease severity provided support for the idea that living with chronic illness has no monolithic meaning. More optimistic individuals reported less need for assistance with basic functional abilities than less optimistic individuals. The usefulness of lability in optimism among individuals with PD is discussed.  相似文献

To examine the effects of pulmonary vascular pressures and flow on pulmonary blood volume (PBV), experiments were performed at constant heart rate and zone 3 conditions (mean left atrial pressure (LAP) above airway pressure) in six anesthetized, open-chest dogs. PBV was calculated as the product of electromagnetic aortic flow and pulmonary mean transit time for ascorbate, obtained without blood withdrawal by polarographic recording of aortic ascorbate changes. In three series of experiments LAP was raised similarly in three steps, from 4.5 to 14.8 mmHg: by mitral constriction which reduced pulmonary blood flow, by blood volume expansion which more than doubled pulmonary blood flow, or by a combination of the two procedures which kept pulmonary blood flow constant. In all three series, LAP and mean pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) rose in proportion, but PBV was better correlated to PAP (r=0.87±0.02) than to LAP (r=0.66±0.09). These experiments suggest that PAP is the most important factor in determining PBV under zone 3 conditions, whether PAP is raised by increasing pulmonary blood flow or by mitral constriction.  相似文献

The influence of inducing motor responses of low and high force at different times in the cardiac cycle was examined. A handgrip response was used which allowed the separation of response initiation from response completion. Based on earlier work, we expected initiation, rather than completion, to initiate poststimulus cardiac acceleration. We also thought that preparation for a high force response might alter preparatory changes of interbeat interval differently from preparation for a low force response. Fifteen college-aged male subjects performed a warned reaction time task in which a visual stimulus signalled a handgrip requiring either a high or a low force to close. NoGo trials in which an inhibit signal was presented occurred on 12% of the trials. Stimuli occurred either on the R-wave of the electrocardiogram or 300 ms later. Reaction speed was varied in different trial blocks by rewarding response times of 200 ms (+/- 50 ms), 300 ms, or 400 ms. Results based on the timing of response initiation were essentially identical to those based on the timing of response completion. High force relative to low force was associated with both earlier response initiation and earlier cardiac acceleration. Force did not alter preparatory cardiac deceleration. Force and response speed did, however, alter the level of heart rate after response occurrence. Thus, response initiation (or an earlier response process) appears to induce a cardiac acceleration whose level is influenced by the speed and force of the motor response.  相似文献

Two experiments were performed to explore further the relationship between the cortical slow potential change known as the “contingent negative variation” (CNV) and the concept of “expectancy.” In Experiment I, 24 male Ss were presented click pairs, with inter-click intervals of 800, 1600 and 4800 msec (2 blocks of 10 trials each, counterbalanced between Ss for order), and instructed to press a key after the second click. Interval by order by trials analysis of variance showed interval to be the only significant factor: CNVs were lower and RTs longer as interval increased. In Experiment II, 8 female Ss given 60 pairs of clicks, 30 each with separations of 1200 and 2400 msec, were instructed to respond as in Experiment I, and were asked to make a pretrial prediction of the interval they would next receive. Analysis of variance of RTs showed that Ss responded slower when the interval was other than that predicted. Prediction by reception by subjects analysis of variance of CNV amplitude at the 1200 msec point gave a significant F only for prediction, mean amplitude for short being higher than for long. A similar design applied to CNV amplitudes at both the 1200 and 2400 msec points when Ss received the long interval yielded a significant measurement point by interval predicted interaction; at the 1200 msec point, short predictions were followed by higher CNVs than were long predictions; at 2400 msec, the opposite was found. These data combine with those already in the literature to indicate that the relationship between “expectancy” and the CNV is far from simple, and that cognitive and motivational factors play a significant role in determining CNV amplitude.  相似文献

A continuous noninvasive method of systolic blood pressure estimation is described. Systolic blood pressure is estimated by combining two separately obtained components: a higher frequency component obtained by extracting a specific frequency band of pulse arrival time and a lower frequency component obtained from the intermittently acquired systolic blood pressure measurements with an auscultatory or oscillometric system. The pulse arrival time was determined by the time interval from QRS apex in electrocardiogram to the onset of photoplethysmogram in a fingertip beat-by-beat via an oximetric sensor. The method was examined in 20 patients during cardiovascular surgery. The estimated values of systolic blood pressure were compared with those measured invasively using a radial arterial catheter. The results showed that the correlation coefficients between estimated values and invasively obtained systolic blood pressure reached 0.97±0.02 (mean±SD), and the error remained within ±10% in 97.8% of the monitoring period. By using a system with automatic cuff inflation and deflation to acquire intermittent systolic blood pressure values, this method can be applicable for the continuous noninvasive monitoring of systolic blood pressure.  相似文献

In equine sport medicine, blood clotting and fibrinolysis variations are well investigated, given the practical implications of several pathophysiological conditions affecting the athlete horse such as exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH) and other bleeding disorders whose etiology and pathogenesis mechanisms are not yet clearly understood. The purpose of the present investigation was to gain evidence of a daily rhythm of several blood clotting indices such as prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), thrombin time (TT), plasma fibrinogen concentration and serum vitamin K concentration in the athletic horses. Blood samples from five thoroughbred mares were collected at 4-h intervals for 48 h (starting at 08:00 h on day 1 and finishing at 4:00 on day 2 via an intravenous catheter inserted into the jugular vein. Prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, thrombin time and plasma fibrinogen concentration were assessed by means of a Seac Clot 2 coagulometer (SEAC, Italy), while serum vitamin K concentration was measured by HPLC. Data analysis was conducted by one-way repeated analysis of variance (ANOVA) and by the single cosinor method. ANOVA showed a significant influence of time on all parameters investigated, in all horses, on either day. Cosinor analysis defined the periodic parameters and their acrophases (expressed in hours) during the 2 days of monitoring. PT showed a nocturnal acrophase, whereas serum vitamin K concentration acrophase occurred during the evening. The results of this study reflect the physiological peculiarities of the horse that is subjected to a number of exogenous (environmental, nutritional, physical) and endogenous stimuli capable of entraining the circadian rhythm specifically and thus producing time-dependent variations not always comparable with those observed in humans or laboratory animals.  相似文献

The purpose of this experiment was to study the brain potentials generated during spatial tasks related to the “schema corporel” (a mental map of sensory-motor relationships). Seven right-handed subjects performed a choice reaction-time task (Experiment 1), in which the spatial position of a visual stimulus (right or left of a fixation point) was varied independently of the spatial position of the response (right or left hand). The subjects also made self-paced extensions and flexions of the right and left index fingers (Experiment 2). Experiments 1 and 2 were performed with the hands both crossed and uncrossed. Spatio-temporal maps showed that the P300 component elicited by the choice RT situation in Experiment 1 was largest ipsilateral to the hand involved in the response, whether or not the hands were crossed. The later part of the pre-movement potentials during Experiment 2 and the motor potential were significantly larger contralateral to the moving hand under all conditions. Thus this pattern of lateralization can be attributed to the superimposition of a bilateral P300 wave on the asymmetrical motor potential. This suggests that distinct neuronal populations are involved in the generation of these two components. P300 latency and RT reflected the spatial conflict: both were longer when the stimulus and response were on opposite sides than when they were on the same side, even when the hands were crossed. However, the average P300 latency was not increased when the hands were crossed, whereas the average RT was substantially increased. Since the additional time required for programming the movement in the crossed hand situation had no effect on P300 generation, we infer that the P300 does not index this motor programming. However, P300 does reflect the stimulus-response spatial matching, since its latency was delayed by spatial conflict.  相似文献

We investigated changes in the P100 latency of the visual evoked potential (VEP) and the saccadic reaction time (SRT) in relation to the degree of activity of the shoulder girdle elevators. Muscle force was set in 10% increments from 0% to 50% of the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). The VEP was derived from a midline occipital electrode with reference electrodes on the ears when the right retina was stimulated through the eyelid by light emitting diodes while the eyes were closed. The P100 latency of the VEP was defined as the time from the stimulus onset to the main positive peak. The SRT was defined as the latency until the beginning of eye movement toward the lateral target, which was moved at random time-intervals. P100 latency was shortened until 30% of the MVC, and which it lengthened. The SRT changed in a pattern similar to that observed for the P100 latency. The ratio of the shortening in P100 latency relative to that of the SRT was approximately 20%. All data is presented as the mean value, plus the standard deviation. We believe that the information processing time in the neural pathway from the retina to the visual cortex was shortened up to a certain muscle force of the shoulder girdle elevators, and then this processing time lengthened. These findings indicate that shortening of information processing time in the neural pathway beyond the visual cortex is included in the shortening of the SRT.  相似文献

The influence of motor responding and typical psychophysiological tasks on heart rate was tested by manipulating motor requirements of reaction time (RT) and time estimation (TE) tasks. Thirty-four volunteers were assigned randomly to four groups. Two groups squeezed a hand dynamometer at the start of a trial and the other two groups squeezed at the finish of the trial. The force of the squeeze was also manipulated: either 3 kg (3) or 7 kg (7). The four groups were Start 3, Start 7, Finish 3, and Finish 7. All subjects participated in the TE and RT tasks. The dependent variables were measurements of forearm flexor muscle tension, heart rate and skin conductance. It was found that the manipulations of when and with what force a person squeezed the dynamometer resulted in reliable group differences in muscle tension. The magnitude of acceleratory components of the triphasic (acceleration-deceleration-acceleration) cardiac response was amplified by tension. The magnitude of the deceleratory component seemed to depend on both muscle tension and stimulus processing. Except for the magnitude of the response-bound deceleration, RT and TE produced very similar heart rate responses, and skin conductance did not differ among groups. The data were interpreted as providing evidence that motor response acts as an amplifier for the phasic HR produced by common psychological paradigms.  相似文献

The possible role of GABAergic mechanisms in the control of the basal ganglia output structures, the globus pallidus (GP) and the entopeduncular nucleus (EP), was studied in cats performing a conditioned flexion movement triggered by an auditory stimulus. The effects of discrete unilateral microinjections of low doses of the GABAA receptor agonist (muscimol 5–100 ng/ 0.5 l) and antagonist (bicuculline methiodide 25–150 ng/0.5 l) in the GP and the EP were tested on the motor performance of eight animals trained to release a lever in a simple reaction time (RT) schedule after an auditory stimulus. Control injections in neighboring structures did not induce any effect except with five- to tenfold higher doses in the closest injection sites. The dose of 20 ng muscimol injected into the ventral and medial part of the GP produced an arrest of the performance after a few unsuccessful trials (over the RT reinforcement limit of 500 ms), while muscimol injected in sites located in the lateral GP resulted in a dose-dependent lengthening in RTs, with a concomitant increase in the force change latency. In most of the subjects, the force exerted on the lever was higher after muscimol than after vehicle injection. Force change velocity was then significantly increased. In contrast, muscimol injected in the ventral and rostral region of the EP produced a decrease in RTs or a complete cessation of responding after a high number of anticipatory responses (release of the lever before the trigger stimulus). No significant changes in the force change latency could be observed while there was a non-significant tendency for the force levels to be lowered. Bicuculline injections in the EP were found to increase RTs with a concomitant increase in force change latency and a slowness of velocity, while no significant effect was observed following injections in the GP. These results suggest that a balance between GABAergic activity in the two output nuclei of the basal ganglia, the GP and the EP, is crucial for the correct initiation and execution of the conditioned motor task.  相似文献
