The incidence of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) and salivary immunoglobulin A concentrations [IgAs] of nine individuals were examined during 12 weeks of moderate exercise training, and compared to ten sedentary controls.
Changes in maximal oxygen uptake were assessed at initial, mid-point and final evaluations (T1–3), while changes in [IgAs] and salivary immunoglobulin concentration-salivary albumin concentration ratio ([IgAs]:[Albs]) were monitored at T1 and T3. During the 12 week period, symptoms of URTI were self-recorded daily. During the period of
training the level of fitness significantly increased (P<0.05) in the exercise group. The number of days recording symptoms of influenza, but not of cold, and total light URTI symptoms was significantly reduced in the exercise group during the last weeks of training. A significant increase in
[IgAs] and in [IgAs]:[Albs] was found in the exercise group after training. Both [IgAs] and [IgAs]:[Albs] were significantly related to the number of days showing symptoms of influenza (P<0.01) and the total number of days of sickness (P<0.05). These data provide quantitative support for the belief that regular, moderate exercise results in an increased [IgAs] at rest and [IgAs]:[Albs], which may contribute to a decreased risk of infection.

The purpose of this study was to quantify the neuromuscular cervical adaptations to an 8 week strength training programme.
Seven healthy men, with no pathological conditions of the neck, performed a lateral flexion isometric resistance-training
programme three times a week. The training sessions consisted of one set of ten contractions, each of 6 s duration, at 60%
of the predetermined maximal voluntary isometric torque (MVTim) (warm-up) and two sets of eight contractions, each of 6 s duration, at 80% MVTim. The training effects were evaluated in three ways: muscle size, strength and fatigability. The cross-sectional areas (CSA)
of the trapezius (TRP) and sternocleidomastoideus (SCM) muscles were determined using a computerised tomographic scanner.
Results showed an increase in the CSA of TRP and SCM muscles after training, 8.8% at C5 level and 6.4% at C7 level for SCM
muscle and 12.2% at C7 level for TRP muscle. Strength increased significantly under both isometric and isokinetic conditions
(35% and 20%, respectively). Muscle fatigability in lateral flexion was quantified during a sustained isometric contraction
at 50% of MVTim. The shift of the mean power frequency of the electromyogram power spectrum density function of SCM muscle toward lower frequencies
was less after training (14.6% compared to 6.8%). These results indicate the beneficial effect of a strength-training programme
which increases neck muscle size and strength during lateral flexion, and decreases the fatigability of the superficial muscles
of the neck.

Summary The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between several physical fitness parameters and eyesight divided into 3 grades in visually handicapped boys and young male adults, and to investigate the effect of mild exercise training on physical and psychic symptoms as well as cardiorespiratory fitness. Four subjects were totally blind (TB), 6 were semi-blind (SB) and 27 had amblyopia (AM). Physical fitness tests consisted of maximal oxygen uptake (V
O
2max), maximal pedalling speed and power, maximal stepping rate, and isometric knee extention strength. Compared with AM and SB groups, the TB group was inferior in all physical fitness parameters. Especially,V
O
2max in TB (26 ml · kg–1 · min–1) was about 56% of that in agematched Japanese sighted subjects and was significantly low compared with the AM and SB groups. Both muscle strength and maximal pedalling power corresponded to about 50% that of the age-matched sighted group. Six SB and 4 TB students (¯x=17.7 years) were trained for 6 weeks on a bicycle ergometer at an intensity of 50%V
O
2max. Training was undertaken for 3 days per week and maintained for 60 min per session. After training, physical and psychic symptoms determined by the Cornell Medical Index improved significantly. These results indicate that low physical work capacity in visually handicapped boys and young male adults is due to the lack of physical activity, and that mild endurance training is effective in improving physical and psychic symptoms as well as cardiorespiratory fitness. 相似文献

Summary The purpose of this study was to compare two ways of estimating both fatigue and fitness indicators from systems model of the effects of training on performance. The model was applied to data concerning the training of a hammer thrower. The variations in performance were mathematically related to the successive amounts of training. The model equation was composed of negative (NF) and positive (PF) functions. The NF and PF were associated with the fatigue and fitness estimated in previous studies. Using another method, fatigue and fitness indicators were estimated from a combination of NF and PF. The influence of training on performance was negatively associated with fatigue (NI), and positively to fitness (PI). The changes in performance were well described by the model in the present study (r = 0.96,N = 19,P<0.001). Significant correlations were observed between NF and NI (r = 0.93,P < 0.001) on the one hand and between PF and PI (r = 0.90,P < 0.001) on the other. The absolute values and the time variations of PI and NI were closer to the change in performance than NF and PF. The NF and PF were accounted for mainly by the accumulation of amounts of training. On the other hand, NI and PI were accounted for rather by the impact of these amounts of training on performance. 相似文献

The status of training in clinical genetics and genetic counseling in Asia is at diverse stages of development and maturity. Most of the training programs are in academic training centers where exposure to patients in the clinics or in the hospital is a major component. This setting provides trainees with knowledge and skills to be competent geneticists and genetic counselors in a variety of patient care interactions. Majority of the training programs combine clinical and research training which provide trainees a broad and integrated approach in the diagnosis and management of patients while providing opportunities for research discoveries that can be translated to better patient care. The background on how the training programs in clinical genetics and genetic counseling in Asia evolved to their current status are described. Summary The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) can be suppressed in darkness if a subject tries to imagine that he looks at a head fixed target. This mental suppression of VOR was used to induce adaptive changes in VOR gam during 3 h of active head oscillations in complete darkness. VOR gain changes were tested by asking the subject to look at a visual target; then passively or actively the head was turned in darkness while the subject fixated the same target. Corrective saccades occurring at the end of the movement when lights were turned on give an elegant measure of VOR gain. Three hours of training induced in 3 subjects a mean of 10.9% and 11.4% decrease of VOR gain for passive and active conditions, respectively. This demonstrates that reflex adaptation can be obtained without external cues, and probably with only an internal reconstruction of target and eye movement. 相似文献

Summary Haematological changes were studied in cross-country skiers during a 33-week training season (7 h a week). The daily amounts of training were calculated from the duration and the intensity of the exercise and then used to estimate training responses associated with a first order transfer function. The profile of system training responses (STR) was determined by convolution between the amounts of training and a first-order transfer function. Linear regressions were used to determine correlation coefficients between STR and iron status indices. Among the values for the time constants of decay, the one giving the best fit between STR and iron status indices was chosen. A relationship was noted between on the one hand STR and changes in serum ferritin concentration ([FERR]) and on the other hand STR and change in mean cell volume (MCV). The [FERR] was decreased and MCV was increased by training. It is suggested that a decrease in [FERR] could have been related to a decrease in total body iron stores. However, large and rapid changes in [FERR] could not have been a reflection of changes in total body iron stores. Equilibrium between [FERR] and total body iron stores could have been temporarily altered by the effects of training. Moreover, iron stores did not seem to have been sufficiently depleted to restrict erythropoiesis. The MCV increased slightly in response to intense training suggesting that training enhances the proportion of young erythrocytes. 相似文献

be culturally bound. Blood Glucose Awareness Training (BGAT) is a psycho-educational program for patients with type 1 diabetes
mellitus. It is focused on improving recognition and management of extreme blood glucose levels, and is the best documented
American psycho-educational program for this purpose. A randomized controlled clinical trial of BGAT's long-term benefits
in a non-American setting has been lacking. One hundred and eleven adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus from Switzerland and
Germany participated. After a 6 months baseline assessment, subjects were randomly assigned to receive either 2 months of
BGAT (n = 56) or a physician-guided self-help control intervention (n = 55). BGAT improved recognition of low (p = 0.008), high (p = .03), and overall blood glucose (p = 0.001), and reduced frequency of severe hypoglycemia (p = 0.04), without compromising metabolic control. BGAT reduced both the external locus of control (p < 0.02) and fear of hypoglycemia (p < 0.02). Effect of relaxation training on cardiac parasympathetic tone 总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
To examine the hypothesis that the relaxation response is associated with an increase in cardiac parasympathetic tone, the frequency components of heart rate variability during relaxation training were investigated in 16 college students. Electrocardiograms and pneumograms were recorded during a 5-min baseline period followed by three successive 5-min sessions of the autogenic training (relaxation) or by the same periods of quiet rest (control), while subjects breathed synchronously with a visual pacemaker (0.25 Hz). Although neither the magnitude nor the frequeney of respiration showed a significant difference between relaxation and control, the amplitude of the high-frequency component of heart rate variability increased only during relaxation (p= .008). There was no significant difference in the ratio of the low-frequency (0.04–0.15 Hz) to the high-frequency amplitudes. The increased high-frequency amplitude without changes in the respiratory parameters indicates enhanced cardiac parasympathetic tone. Thus, our results support the initial hypothesis of this study. Enhanced cardiac parasympathetic tone may explain an important mechanism underlying the beneficial effect of the relaxation response. 相似文献
