Heart rate reactivity to mental stress is substantially blunted early after heart transplantation, suggesting that the loss of neural modulation limits the cardiovascular response to mental stress. We tested whether reactivity to mental stress recovers during the first year after heart transplantation. Hemodynamic and respiratory responses to mental arithmetic challenge were studied in 20 heart transplant recipients 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery. A normal comparison group was studied at equivalent intervals. Heart rate reactivity to mental arithmetic was significantly reduced in the cardiac transplant group compared to the normal subjects. This effect persisted up to 1 year after transplantation. Heart period variability in the heart transplant recipients was minimal in all three-test sessions. The findings suggest that no functional reinnervation or other compensatory adaptation occurs up to 1 year after heart transplantation.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Although beef is a main source of protein in Western diets, very little has been published on allergic reactions to beef or the main allergens implicated in these reactions. The aim was to evaluate the IgE antibody response to beef in suspected meat-allergic subjects and assess cross-reactivity of beef with other vertebrate meats. METHODS: Fifty-seven sera from suspected meat-allergic subjects were tested by grid blot for specific IgE antibodies to vertebrate meats (beef, lamb, pork, venison, and chicken), and the patterns of recognition of meat proteins were assessed by immunoblot studies. RESULTS: A 160-kDa band, identified as bovine IgG, was detected in raw beef in 83% (10/12) of beef-allergic subjects but in only 24% of the beef-tolerant subjects. IgE reactivity to a band of similar mol. mass was detected also in lamb and venison, but rarely in pork or chicken. Complete inhibition of the IgE reactivity to the bovine IgG was obtained with lamb, venison, and milk. IgE reactivity to this band also completely disappeared when beef or lamb extracts were separated under reducing conditions, indicating conformational epitopes. CONCLUSIONS: Bovine IgG appears to be a major cross-reacting meat allergen that could predict beef allergy. Further studies with oral IgG challenges should be performed to document the conclusion that in vitro reactivity correlates with clinical hypersensitivity. The role of bovine IgG in other bovine products such as milk, dander, or hair must also be studied, and the hypothesis that it is a cross-reacting allergen with other mammalian products validated.  相似文献

This experiment tested the hypothesis that inotropic cardiovascular reactivity to stress is related to performance on heartbeat discrimination tasks. The experiment also compared the efficacy of a specific modification of two popular heartbeat discrimination paradigms, Whitehead's and Katkin's. Subjects were 48 male undergraduates who performed both discrimination tasks and then were subjected to mental arithmetic stress. Results indicated that high cardiovascular reactors were better detectors than low reactors. Results also indicated that subjects performed better on the modified Whitehead task than on the modified Katkin task.  相似文献

This study provides the first psychophysiological analysis of narcissism by measuring autonomic responses during active and passive anticipatory coping in 40 undergraduate men who scored high or low on the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI). Compared to the low NPI group, the high NPI group showed greater preejection period (PEP) shortening, cardiac deceleration, and skin conductance response (SCR) habituation during anticipation of an aversive stimulus (p < .02). As expected, SCR and PEP reactivity were greater during active than passive coping. In the case of PEP, this effect emerged only in the low NPI group; the high NPI group showed the greatest PEP reactivity during the first task, regardless of coping demands. These data support hypothesized relationships among narcissism, psychopathy, and psychological predictors of cardiovascular disease, and suggest that a psychobiological dimension may underlie important features of narcissism.  相似文献

We examined the long term predictivity of heart rate reactivity (HRR) and its relation to cardiovascular and biochemical activity during rest and during tasks requiring active and passive coping. HRR was determined in 28 young men by measuring peak heart rate change to cold pressor one year after performing tasks eliciting active and passive coping. Heart rate change to cold pressor was significantly correlated with change to active coping (r= .65, p<.01) and to passive coping (r= .53, p<.01). Responses to the tasks were equivalent for Type A and B subjects. On the other hand, high HRRs were significantly more reactive than low HRRs with the effect being most apparent during active coping. HRR appeared to be a trait stable over one year which predicted enhanced cardiac, neuroendocrine, and neuromuscular response.  相似文献

Cerebral blood flow (CBF) and oxygen consumption (CMRO2) were measured during acute and long-term ethanol intoxication in the rat. The purpose was to investigate whether the adaptive changes (development of tolerance) occurring in the CNS during ethanol intoxication were associated with changes in CBF and/or CMRO2. Consistent with other studies we found that acute severe ethanol intoxication (median blood alcohol concentration (BAC=5.4 mg/ml)) caused a significant decrease in CBF and CMRO2. After 3–4 days of severe intoxication (BAC of 6.6 mg/ml) these physiological variables were less affected indicating that functional tolerance had developed: CMRO2 and CBF during acute ethanol intoxication were 9.3 ml/100 g/min and 60 ml/100 g/min respectively; after the long term intoxication period these variables reached 11.2 ml/100 g/min and 78 ml/100 g/min respectively, i.e. values not significantly lower than those of the control group. After induction of hypercapnia (PaCO2 about 80 mmHg) CBF increased by 360% in the control group; in the acutely intoxicated group CBF increased by only 127% and in the long term intoxicated group by 203 % indicating that the cerebrovascular CO2-reactivity had also adapted to the ethanol intoxication. It is concluded that adaptive changes of the CNS to chronic ethanol intoxication comprise alterations in CMRO2, CBF and cerebrovascular reactivity.  相似文献

Eating behaviors are influenced by the reinforcing properties of foods that can favor decisions driven by reward incentives over metabolic needs. These food reward-motivated behaviors are modulated by gut-derived peptides such as ghrelin and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) that are well-established to promote or reduce energy intake, respectively. In this review we highlight the antagonizing actions of ghrelin and GLP-1 on various behavioral constructs related to food reward/reinforcement, including reactivity to food cues, conditioned meal anticipation, effort-based food-motivated behaviors, and flavor-nutrient preference and aversion learning. We integrate physiological and behavioral neuroscience studies conducted in both rodents and human to illustrate translational findings of interest for the treatment of obesity or metabolic impairments. Collectively, the literature discussed herein highlights a model where ghrelin and GLP-1 regulate food reward-motivated behaviors via both competing and independent neurobiological and behavioral mechanisms.  相似文献

Barbiturates are used clinically as anaesthetics and to reduce raised intracranial pressure. One side effect is hypotension, usually ascribed to a depression of cardiac contractility, while their effects on the resistance vessels are more controversial: both vasodilation and vasoconstriction have been described. This study analyzes the effects of thiopental on basal vascular tone in the cat skeletal muscle. We found that total resistance increased by almost 20% at low (50mol/l) and decreased down to about 50% of control at high (350 mol/l) plasma concentrations of thiopental. The vasoconstriction dominated in the large arterioles (i.d. >25 m) and the vasodilation in the small arterioles (i.d. <25 m). A dosedependent inhibition of myogenic vascular reactivity (here defined as the maximum resistance increase to a transient rise in transmural pressure) coincided with the vasodilation. Autoregulation of blood flow was depressed by thiopental. During vasoconstriction there was a net transcapillary fluid absorption and during vasodilation a net fluid filtration. The fluid movements could be ascribed to variations in capillary hydrostatic pressure. If applicable to the cerebral circulation these results suggest that thiopental at high plasma concentrations might induce, instead of reduce, interstitial brain oedema.  相似文献

  1. We have investigated the role of endogenous nitric oxide on renal vascular reactivity in late pregnancy in in situ blood perfused kidneys of α-chloralose anaesthetized Wistar-Kyoto rats. Nitric oxide synthesis inhibition was achieved by intravenous administration of NG-nitro-L-arginine or NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester.
  2. Intra-arterial mean blood pressure was lower in pregnancy compared with nonpregnant controls. Following nitric oxide synthesis inhibition mean blood pressure increased in both pregnant and nonpregnant groups, but remained lower in pregnant animals.
  3. Basal renal perfusion pressure was similar in pregnant and nonpregnant groups. Intravenous administration of NG-nitro-L-arginine resulted in dose-dependent increases in renal perfusion pressure but responses were substantially depressed in pregnancy.
  4. Renal vasoconstrictor responses to regional angiotensin II (AII) were decreased in pregnancy, whereas those to noradrenaline (NA) did not differ from nonpregnant controls. NG-nitro-L-arginine (5 mg kg−1) potentiated renal responses to regional AII and NA in both groups, but AII responses remained lower in pregnancy. Blunted renal AII responses in pregnancy were still evident following large doses of NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (100 mg kg−1).
  5. The results demonstrate that nitric oxide synthesis inhibition increases renal perfusion pressure to a lesser extent in pregnant compared with nonpregnant rats, and that reduced renal pressor responses to AII are still evident in pregnancy after nitric oxide synthesis inhibition.
  6. These results suggest that although endogenous nitric oxide synthesis modulates renal vasoconstrictor responses in both pregnant and nonpregnant animals, this mechanism does not fully account for the blunted renal vasoconstrictor responses to regional AII or nitric oxide inhibitors in near term pregnant rats. The nature of this important physiological vasodilator mechanism in pregnancy remains to be elucidated.
