Low doses of oxytocin facilitate social recognition in rats   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
Social recognition of juveniles by adult male residents has been shown to be modulated by neurohypophyseal hormones. The decrease of social investigation behavior during a second encounter with the same juvenile serves as index for social recognition. In the present study it was found that low doses (0.09–6.0 ng · kg–1) of oxytocin (OXT) given subcutaneously dose dependently facilitated social recognition. The effect of OXT appeared specific, since no change in social investigation was found when a novel juvenile was tested during the second encounter. No disturbances of social recognition by the low doses of OXT could be detected, in contrast to higher doses of this hormone. Other neurohypophyseal hormones, vasopressin and vasotocin, did not facilitate social recognition when tested in the same range of low doses.  相似文献

The novel sewing ring concept consists of a detachable ring snap connection between valve housing or stent and suture cuff. The suture cuff itself is a memory metal ring of nickel-titanium (NiTi) that is embedded within a textile fabric torus. After a special training program the ring can assume two geometric shapes when alternately cooled and heated. Due to this physical property, the sewing ring can be safely fixed within a groove of the housing or stent by changing between room and physiological temperature. This allows the surgeon first to implant the sewing ring followed by arbitrary positioning and final fixation of the valve by the shape-memory effect. Additional advantages are an increased stiffening of the valve base for minimizing potential leaflet dysfunction, and reduced time and risk of implantation, particularly when a reoperation is necessary.  相似文献

The enigmatic nature of the experience of self-awareness is examined in the light of recent discoveries and, on this basis, combined with inferences derived introspectively from the experience of the phenomenon itself; a specific physical locus of this experience within the human brains is deduced-proposed. The fundamental premise in this work is that whereever conscious self-awareness is generated, the neuronal structure(s) involved must continually have access to an extremely precise representation of information derived from the sense of vision plus a great variety of other kinds of information so as to permit it to make decisions regarding actions (movements and their implementation) that promote the survival and perpetuation of the biological system in which the self is generated. First, a definitve set of criteria that define most of the inputs to and operations carried out by the self-awareness entity were assembled. This ensemble of functions was then compared with the connections and possible roles of specific neuroanatomical structures described in published literature, particularly the recent literature and particularly that concerned with the sense of vision. It was discovered that only one brain structure receives the prerequisite information from the sense of vision plus information derived from cortical memory stores plus a variety of other relevant sources needed to generate a coherent sense of selfness. This structure is the superior colliculus of the tectum. The superior colliculi not only receive a highly precise retinotopic representation of inputs to the eyes, but also receive inputs from a great variety of other structures, including many areas of the cerebral cortex, vestibular inputs, auditory inputs, "affective" inputs, and inputs that putatively define the positions of the eyes and of the head. This information, it is deduced, not only allows this structure to generate a continuing synthesis of representations of the self-vs.-environment, but also allows a part of it to assess the significance (probable meaning) of these integrated inputs with respect to the selection of an implementation of actions that serve the interests of the physical structure in which the self-experience is generated. The function of memory in this system not only involves the continually updated representation of where the self is with respect to items and objects in its environment, but also provides means through which the relevance of recorded experiences representing the past may be caused to affect the decision-making process.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

Seventy volunteers were injected with diazepam (0.3 mg/kg), scopolamine (8 g/kg), or placebo, followed 70 min later by another injection of physostigmine, physostigmine and methscopolamine (in case of diazepam treatment), or placebo. Physostigmine was given in two doses, 16 and 32 g/kg; methscopolamine, 8 and 16 g/kg. Subjects (Ss) were tested in groups of 5 in a double blind procedure with treatments distributed according to a Latin square design. Prior to treatment, Ss heard a series of lists of words, followed by an immediate recall test. Following the first injection, delayed free recall and recognition tests were given. The second drug was then injected, followed by a presentation of another two sets of lists which were tested similarly. Subjective feelings were also evaluated with a rating questionnaire.Diazepam and scopolamine did not affect recall of information which had been learned prior to drug injection. However, both drugs impaired the learning or acquisition of new information. Physostigmine, especially in its high dose, antagonized most of the memory deficits produced by scopolamine while those of diazepam remained. This is a strong indication that scopolamine acts centrally through an anticholinergic mechanism while diazepam may act through a different system.  相似文献

A repeated measures procedure, variable intertrial interval (ITI) spatial alternation, was used to assess scopolamine effects on memory, and to compare effects of the drug on discrimination processes with effects on storage. Rats learned in two stages to press left and right levers in alternation on discrete trials separated by 5 different ITI's ranging from 2.5 to 40 s and presented in random order during the experimental session. In the first stage, alternating discrimination, alternation was controlled by a light on over the correct lever at the time of the trial; in the second stage, variable ITI spatial alternation, a centrally located panel light signalled all trials and alternation was controlled by stimuli from prior trials (memory). Alternation response occurrence declined moderately (but significantly) with increasing ITI duration in both the alternating discrimination and variable ITI spatial alternation stages; response occurrence was also significantly decreased by scopolamine treatment in both stages. Accuracy of alternating discrimination performance was not significantly altered by either ITI duration or scopolamine treatment. Accuracy of variable ITI spatial alternation performance on a trial varied inversely with the duration of the ITI that preceded the trial. Scopolamine treatment significantly reduced accuracy of lever pressing in variable ITI spatial alternation but did not alter the slope of the curves relating accuracy to ITI duration. These effects indicate that the drug impaired discrimination processes but did not alter memory storage.  相似文献

Impaired working memory (WM) performance is considered as a central feature of schizophrenia. Divided into two components, verbal and spatial, WM has been shown to involve frontal and parietal regions. Verbal WM can be tested either visually or aurally. The present study aimed to test schizophrenic patients in both visual and auditory verbal WM in order to assess a possible distinct pattern of alteration of these two modalities. Twenty-four schizophrenic patients and 24 healthy controls were compared with 2-back continuous visual and auditory verbal WM testing. Both groups were also tested on a neuropsychological battery including Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). Schizophrenic patients were less efficient in both verbal WM tests. When taking age and educational level as covariates and both WM modalities as dependent variables, there was no differential effect of modalities across groups. In further exploratory analyses, partial correlations brought association between verbal WM and psychosocial adaptation, WCST and length of illness. These results suggest a similar pattern of alteration of both modalities of verbal WM in schizophrenic patients. The implications of this finding are discussed. Sandblasting is a procedure of increasing surface roughness. This treatment is common in the orthopedic field. An increased roughness may affect the endurance limit of the material. This study investigates the effect on the endurance limit of the Ti6Al4V due to two different sandblasting treatments: fine sandblasting and coarse sandblasting. Twenty hip stems, 10 finely sandblasted and 10 coarsely sandblasted, were tested under sinusoidal fluctuating bending. The staircase method was used to estimate the endurance limit of the material. The results show an important reduction in the endurance properties up to 40% for the coarsely sandblasted specimens. The failures of the sandblasted specimens were not due to material defects. Rather, the decreased endurance strength of the sandblasted stems was caused by surface defects, which act as crack initiators. By modulating the roughness with an appropriate sandblasting treatment, it is possible to limit the reduction in the endurance limit of the alloy.  相似文献

Individuals chronically exposed to low levels of organophosphate insecticides may present with subtle impairments in cognition. In addition, low level diisopropylflurophosphate (DFP) exposure (0.25 mg/kg per day for 2 weeks) in rats resulted in protracted working memory impairment [29]. The current studies attempt to show a temporal relationship between the DFP-induced impairment in performance of a spatial memory task and the protracted decrease in the expression of cholinergic receptors and acetylcholinesterase in specific brain regions. Cholinergic receptors labeled with the ligands [(3)H]epibatidine and [(3)H]AFDX-384 were affected to a much greater extent and for a longer period of time than were both acetylcholinesterase activities and cholinergic receptors labeled with [(3)H]QNB. Pre-testing administration of nicotine was shown to completely reverse this DFP-induced impairment in memory-related task performance. Additionally, prophylaxis with pyridostigmine bromide (PB) caused DFP-treated animals to exhibit near normal levels of memory-related task performance. These results are consistent with the development of a protracted phase of learning impairment to sub-acute DFP exposure, which may involve the loss of hippocampal nicotinic receptors, and may be prevented or reversed by PB or nicotine, respectively.  相似文献

Long-term memory formation for passive-avoidance learning in the day-old chick is known to have two distinct time windows of protein synthesis (F.M. Freeman, S.P.R. Rose, A.B. Scholey, 1995. Two time windows of anisomycin-induced amnesia for passive-avoidance training in the day-old chick. Neurobiol. Learn. Mem. 63, 291-295). The lobus parolfactorius (LPO) is thought to be an important site for the second wave of protein synthesis which occurs 4-5 h after training. Birds received bilateral intracranial injections of agonists and antagonists for the mu-, delta-, kappa-opioid receptors and the opioid receptor-like (ORL(1)) receptor directly into the LPO at 5 h post-training and were tested for recall 24 h later. Also, 100 microM beta-funaltrexamine (beta-FAN), a mu-opioid receptor antagonist, significantly impaired memory formation (P<0.01). The delta-opioid receptor was also involved in memory formation at this time-point since antagonism of this receptor by 1 mM ICI-174,864 caused amnesia (P<0.01) which was reversed by the agonist, DPLPE. The kappa-opioid receptor appeared not to be involved during the second phase of neuronal activity since neither stimulation by dynorphin nor inhibition by nor-BIN caused amnesia for the task. The ORL(1) receptor agonist orphanin FQ also had no effect suggesting that this receptor was not involved at this 5-h time-point. Cytosolic and mitochondrial protein synthesis has been shown to be important in passive-avoidance learning in the day-old chick. Both chloramphenicol (CAP) and anisomycin (ANI), inhibitors of mitochondrial and cytosolic protein synthesis, respectively, caused disruption when injected 5 h post-training into the LPO (P<0.05). Endomorphin-2 (Endo-2), a mu-opioid receptor agonist, reversed both the ANI- and CAP-sensitivity. However, DPLPE, a delta-opioid receptor agonist, only reversed the effect due to CAP. Possible mechanisms for these effects are discussed.  相似文献

PURPOSE: There is now a considerable amount of research relating to memory functioning in epilepsy. The majority of studies have focused on the retention of new information, and few reports have measured memory for past events. This study aims to redress this and measure the efficiency of remote memory in epilepsy. METHODS: A remote memory questionnaire was prepared and administered to three groups of patients with epilepsy and a control group without epilepsy. The questionnaire assessed knowledge of public events that occurred between 1980 and 1991, inclusive. The epilepsy groups comprised 33 patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), 33 with extratemporal epilepsy (ExTE), and 10 with primary generalized epilepsy (PGE). Thirty control subjects were tested. RESULTS: Patients with TLE performed significantly less well on the questionnaire than all other groups (p = 0.001), but no effect of laterality was recorded; patients with extratemporal or primary generalised epilepsy did not differ from controls. Performance on the questionnaire was not determined by verbal IQ, educational achievement, social class, or drug treatment, but was related to the number of generalised convulsions that had occurred since 1980. The strongest neuropsychological predictors of performance on this questionnaire were measures of verbal memory. CONCLUSIONS: The study demonstrated weak memory for past events in patients with TLE, thereby providing evidence of a broader memory disturbance in this group than has been previously highlighted. A test of remote memory, such as the one designed for this study, is easy to administer and provides clinically important information not available from conventional neuropsychological tests.  相似文献
