AimThis study aimed to investigate the differences in fine motor and coordination skills between boys with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and typically developing (TD) boys and the effect of methylphenidate (MPH) in boys with ADHD.MethodsFourteen boys aged 7–12 years who were diagnosed with ADHD and previously treated with MPH were instructed to tap their thumbs and index fingers together repetitively for 10 s after attaching magnetic sensors. The participants executed “in-phase” and “anti-phase” tapping. A two-way analysis of variance for comparing boys with ADHD and TD boys and the paired t-test to investigate the effect of MPH between sessions with and without MPH were performed.ResultsBoys with ADHD showed a significantly lower “number of taps” and a significantly higher “average of local maximum distance” than TD boys. “Energy balance” was significantly lower in ADHD boys than in TD boys. MPH caused a significant difference in the “standard deviation (SD) of phase difference” in “anti-phase tapping.”ConclusionOur studies indicated that finger-tapping movements in boys with ADHD tended to be significantly wider and fewer than those in TD boys, and MPH may improve the phase difference of bimanual fine motor coordination skills in boys with ADHD who are above 1.0 SD. The results should be interpreted with caution because we conducted statistical tests for many outcomes and groups without considering the multiplicity factor from an exploratory perspective.  相似文献

We explored the relationship between hand orientation and movement time. Three groups of participants (n = 8 per group) were asked to grasp an object rotated in one of the following planes: (1) coronal; (2) sagittal; (3) horizontal. In the coronal plane, the rotational requirements directly mapped onto the neuromuscular demands associated with a single joint-level degree of freedom movement. A simple lawful relationship was found between the extent of rotation (pronation or supination) and duration. Reach-to-grasp movements to objects rotated in the sagittal and horizontal plane produced different movement patterns. These patterns increased the muscle level degrees of freedom recruited (higher neuromuscular demands) and movement duration increased correspondingly though not in a simple manner. The results of the present study show unambiguously that object orientation influences the duration of reach-to-grasp movements.  相似文献

ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to determine how electronic consults (eConsults) are used in vascular surgery in a veterans health care setting and whether their use is safe for patients.MethodsA retrospective review was performed of all eConsults completed by the vascular surgery service at the Ann Arbor Veterans Affairs Healthcare System between October 10, 2012 and November 15, 2013. Patients' demographics and comorbidities were collected. eConsult recommendations and patient and provider compliance with recommendations were collected. Data on adverse outcomes up to 1 year after consultation and data on all-cause mortality at 1 year and 5 years were collected.ResultsBetween October 10, 2012 and November 15, 2013, of 350 eConsults completed, 123 (35%) were for peripheral artery disease, 93 (27%) for carotid stenosis, and 57 (16%) for abdominal aortic aneurysm. Unique recommendations were made for 291 consults (83%). Medication recommendations were made in 140 consults (40%). The most commonly recommended medication was cilostazol. Compliance with medication recommendations ranged from 30% to 61%. Noninvasive imaging was recommended in 220 consults (60.3%). Procedures overall were recommended in only six consults (1.7%). Five-year all-cause mortality for categorized diagnoses ranged from 8.3% for nonabdominal aneurysm to 28.1% for abdominal aortic aneurysm.ConclusionsWithin the Veterans Affairs vascular surgery service, eConsults provide a safe and effective means of triaging and providing recommendations for patients with vascular disease. eConsults used to augment traditional consultations may provide an important means of reducing clinic congestion for providers and reducing time and cost for patients.  相似文献

Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) experience considerable difficulties coordinating and controlling their body movements during functional motor tasks. Thus, it is not surprising that children with DCD do not perform well on tests of physical fitness. The aim of this study was to determine whether deficits in motor coordination influence the ability of children with DCD to perform adequately on physical fitness tests. A case–control study design was used to compare the performance of children with DCD (n = 70, 36 boys, mean age = 8y 1mo) and Typically Developing (TD) children (n = 70, 35 boys, mean age = 7y 9mo) on measures of isometric strength (hand-held dynamometry), functional strength, i.e. explosive power and muscular endurance (Functional Strength Measurement), aerobic capacity (20 m Shuttle Run Test) and anaerobic muscle capacity, i.e. muscle power (Muscle Power Sprint Test). Results show that children with DCD were able to generate similar isometric forces compared to TD children in isometric break tests, but were significantly weaker in three-point grip strength. Performance on functional strength items requiring more isolated explosive movement of the upper extremities, showed no significant difference between groups while items requiring muscle endurance (repetitions in 30 s) and items requiring whole body explosive movement were all significantly different. Aerobic capacity was lower for children with DCD whereas anaerobic performance during the sprint test was not. Our findings suggest that poor physical fitness performance in children with DCD may be partly due to poor timing and coordination of repetitive movements.  相似文献

Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) often experience difficulties in handwriting. The current study examined the relationships between three motor assessments and the spatial and temporal consistency of handwriting. Twelve children with probable DCD and 29 children from 7 to 12 years who were typically developing wrote the lowercase letters “e” and “l” in cursive and printed forms repetitively on a digitizing tablet. Three behavioral assessments, including the Beery–Buktenica Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration (VMI), the Minnesota Handwriting Assessment (MHA) and the Movement Assessment Battery for Children (MABC), were administered. Children with probable DCD had low scores on the VMI, MABC and MHA and showed high temporal, not spatial, variability in the letter-writing task. Their MABC scores related to temporal consistency in all handwriting conditions, and the Legibility scores in their MHA correlated with temporal consistency in cursive “e” and printed “l”. It appears that children with probable DCD have prominent difficulties on the temporal aspect of handwriting. While the MHA is a good product-oriented assessment for measuring handwriting deficits, the MABC shows promise as a good assessment for capturing the temporal process of handwriting in children with DCD.  相似文献

The current research aimed at examining the executive function (EF) of young adults with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) in comparison to young adults without DCD. The study used a randomized cohort (N = 429) of young adults with DCD (n = 135), borderline DCD (n = 149) and control (n = 145), from a previous study. This initial cohort was asked to participate in the current study three to four years later. Twenty-five individuals with DCD (mean age = 24 years, 1 month [SD = 0.88]; 18 males), 30 with borderline DCD (mean age = 24 years, 2 month [SD = 0.98]; 18 males) and 41 without DCD (mean age = 25 years, 2 months [SD = 1.91]; 20 males) participated in this study. Participants completed the BRIEF-A questionnaire, assessing EF abilities and the WURS questionnaire, assessing attention abilities. The DCD and borderline DCD groups had significantly lower EF profiles in comparison with the control group but no significant differences were found between the DCD and borderline DCD groups. While a high percentage of attention problems were found in both DCD groups, the executive functioning profiles remained consistent even when using the attention component as a covariate. The study results suggest that young adults with DCD have EF problems which remain consistent with or without attention difficulties.  相似文献

Summary The central changes associated with a period of strength training have been investigated in a group of 32 young healthy volunteers. Subjects participated in one of three 12 week training programmes, which required different degrees of skill and coordination. Study 1 consisted of unilateral isometric training of the quadriceps with the contralateral leg acting as a control, the apparatus providing firm back support and a lap strap. In Study 2 training consisted of unilateral concentric leg-extension with back support and hand-grips. In Study 3 subjects performed bilateral leg-extension with no back support. Measurements of maximum voluntary isometric strength were made at 2–3 week intervals and a continual record was kept of the weights lifted in Studies 2 and 3. The largest increase in isometric force was seen for the trained leg in Study 1 (approximately 40%). There was no significant change in strength in the contralateral untrained leg. In Studies 2 and 3 there was a large increase in training weights (about 200%) associated with smaller increase in isometric force (15–20%). It is concluded that a large part of the improvement in the ability to lift weights was due to an increased ability to coordinate other muscle groups involved in the movement such as those used to stabilise the body. The importance of these findings for athletic training and rehabilitation is discussed.  相似文献
