Studying the oscillatory potentials in diabetic retinopathy, the authors experienced several problems interpreting results of digital filtering. The main problem was the separation of the first potential from the a-wave, since their frequencies are within the same range. To improve the procedure of measuring implicit times and of calculating amplitudes, the filtering was started with a finite impulse response filter and followed by a fast Fourier transform. The power of the oscillatory potential was calculated by determining the dominant frequency in the Fourier transformed response and expressed in microwatts. A group of normal subjects was compared with a group of early diabetic retinopathy patients. It appears that even in pathological circumstances a quantitative expression of the oscillatory potential is possible. 相似文献

The construction of a needle-shaped multiwire microelectrode is described. It can be made with simple mechanical tools. The presented electrode assembly consists of 12 insulated nichrome wires (core diameter 25 μm) which are embedded in epoxylite resin. The straight-cut wire tips are aligned lengthwise and have a relative spacing of 150 μm. Outer dimensions vary from 100 × 180 μm at the level of the 1st electrode channel, to 100 × 100 μm at the level of the 12th channel at the tip. The configuration of this electrode was determined by its application: the laminar analysis of evoked potentials in the cortex of the rat. However, the number of channels, the diameter of the (nichrome) wire which determines the surface area of these channels, and the channel spacing can be easily adjusted during construction to meet other experimental requirements, such as the recording of single-unit activity. The electrode which is composed of biocompatible materials is suited for the study of field potentials and multiple-unit activity, in both acute and chronic experiments, and can be used repeatedly. To demonstrate the performance of the electrode assembly, a depth profile of field potentials is presented, accompanied by the corresponding current source density distribution. We have investigated the regulation of anN-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor-mediated synaptic potential by γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-mediated inhibition using extracellular and whole-cell voltage clamp recordings in rat auditory cortex in vitro. Single afferent stimulus pulses at low intensity elicited a slow extracellular negativity (Component C) that was mediated by NMDA receptors. At higher intensities, Component C was suppressed by recruitment of GABAergic inhibition. To understand the actions of GABAergic inhibition on Component C, we determined the effects of: (i) paired-pulse stimulation, which depresses GABAergic inhibition; (ii) pharmacological antagonism of GABA receptors; and (iii) afferent stimulation in slices from neonatal rats prior to the development of cortical inhibition. The results indicate that GABAergic inhibition prevents Component C fromoccurring, thereby preventing its reduction upon repeated stimulation. Whole-cell voltage clamp recordings were used to test the hypothesis that GABAergic suppression occurred by way of membrane hyperpolarization. At hyperpolarized holding potentials no NMDA receptor-mediated synaptic current was elicited, even with paired-pulse stimulation. At depolarized holding potentials a significant NMDA synaptic current was elicited despite the presence of GABAergic synaptic currents. We conclude that membrane hyperpolarization by GABAergic inhibition prevents the appearance and subsequent fatigue of an NMDA receptor-mediated synaptic potential. We modelled the responses of human primary sensorimotor areas and supplementary motor area to simple, self-initiated unilateral and simultaneous bilateral middle finger movements using a novel high-resolution electroencephalography technology. The results support the view that these cortical motor areas are involved in parallel and present similar activity in the preparation, initiation, and execution of the contralateral and bilateral movements. Furthermore, the left primary sensorimotor area (dominant hemisphere) appears to be activated more than the right primary sensorimotor area during the preparation and performance of the ipsilateral movements. 相似文献

Of all the electroretinogram (ERG) components (a-wave, b-wave, and oscillatory potentials) only one oscillatory potential, OP2, was found to be significantly correlated with the absolute intensity of the flash stimulus (i.e., the intensity of the stimulus irrespective of the state of retinal adaptation). Our finding was further confirmed in single cell recordings of lateral geniculate unit activity in rabbits in which peak time of OP2 was found to correlate better with the geniculate activity. For these reasons we have identified OP2 as the intensity coding oscillatory potential of the ERG. In order to investigate if this new feature could have some clinical significance, we examined photopic ERGs recorded from patients affected with various retinopathies. In most instances the peak time of OP2 paralleled that of the b-wave, that is, in the ERG with delayed b-wave the peak time of OP2 was also delayed, while in ERGs with normal b-wave peak time the peak time of OP2 was also normal. However, in some conditions (especially in cone-rod diseases) a delayed OP2 was found in ERGs with normal b-wave peak times. 相似文献

The study-test paradigm was used to investigate memory acquisition processes and the effects of repetition on long-term recognition memory. In this procedure, subjects are presented with a list of words (“targets”) to be memorized (Study series). They are later tested for recognition on a word list comprised of the target words mixed randomly with an equal number of new, distractor words (Test series). Both reaction time and the P300 component of the event-related brain potential were used as measures of processing time. During the Study series, large P300s were elicited despite a word category probability of 1.0. When the words from the Study series were divided on the basis of recognition performance, words that were subsequently recognized elicited P300s with shorter latencies than unrecognized words. P300 amplitude to words in the Study series increased with repetition while maintaining a constant latency. During the Test series, P300 latency and reaction time decreased with repetition for both target and distractor words. P300 amplitude to all words increased substantially over Test repetitions with target words eliciting larger P300s than distractor words. Words that were recognized more consistently during the Test series elicited larger and earlier P300s than words that were recognized less consistently. The P300 amplitude and latency results from both the Study and Test series are interpreted as reflecting the increased discriminability of the target words as the memory trace increases in strength. 相似文献

In the first experiment, 48 subjects carried out a visual spatial attention task. Stimuli were presented at the vertical meridian, either above or below a fixation dot, and the subjects were instructed to attend to one of these stimulus positions and ignore the other position. In three different conditions, the distances between stimulus positions and fixation were 0.5°, 0.9°, and 1.3°. Subjects searched for the presence of prememorized target letters at the attended location: memory load was one or four items in different conditions. The P1/N1 enhancement typically found on the horizontal dimension was not observed on the vertical dimension. Instead, a positive shift of the attended compared with the unattended stimuli was found, which was most prominent at anterior electrodes. This positivity showed effects of the distance manipulation. The N2b-P3a effect of attention and the effect of memory load (search negativity) normally present in this kind of selective search task were also found. Reaction times were faster when attention was directed above fixation than when it was directed below fixation. The event-related potential data suggested that this difference could be attributed to a more efficient neglecting of irrelevant stimuli presented below fixation. In Experiment 2, we examined whether the absence of the P1/N1 enhancement as the result of spatial attention in Experiment 1 could be attributed to (a) the presentation of stimuli along the vertical meridian instead of along the horizontal meridian, (b) the use of midline electrodes instead of lateralized electrodes, and (c) the relatively small spatial separation between the relevant and irrelevant stimuli. Twelve subjects searched for the presence of a single target letter at an attended position in three different conditions. In two of the conditions the letters were presented to the left or right of fixation. The distance between fixation and the stimulus positions was 1.3° in one of these conditions and 3° in the other condition. In the third condition, the stimuli were presented at 3° above or below fixation. In all three conditions effects similar to those in Experiment 1 were observed. In order to determine the extent to which distraction disrupts performance when attention is divided, the distribution of attention across five auditory input channels was assessed using the N1 component of the human auditory evoked potential. In addition, the possibility that methylphenidate (Ritalin) affects the distribution of attention across input channels was tested. Sixteen subjects performed a tone discrimination task under conditions of focused attention and divided attention, both with and without the presence of stimuli interposed between the points to be attended. The subjects performed in two sessions during which they received either methylphenidate (10 mg) or a placebo in a double-blind design. The results showed that the interposed stimuli were receiving some attention resulting in a disruption of performance. Methylphenidate did not affect the distribution of attention as reflected in the N1 wave. The data are interpreted as showing that: 1) distraction plays a major role in producing performance deficits observed with divided attention; and 2) methylphenidate does not appreciably affect the distribution of attention across input channels. 相似文献

Long time-constant EEG recording during paired stimuli has led to the discovery of the contingent negative variation or expectancy wave (Walter, 1964). This effect is produced when a conditional stimulus signals that an imperative stimulus demanding action, decision, or attention will follow at a short, constant time interval. Symbolic and meaningful stimuli were presented to subjects tachistoscopically, and the evoked responses in the brain were electronically averaged. The cerebral evoked responses to such psychological stimuli are more complex than to flashes. A slow negative DC potential shift (CNV) was seen during the interval between an auditory ready signal and the visual exposure if recognition of the stimulus was required, or if it was interesting. Following the visual exposure, a slow positive DC shift occurred. The method has been developed to study the brain responses to psychological stimuli. The amplitude of the responses relates to the information content and subjective factors rather than to the physical strength of the stimulus. 相似文献
