Solidang,a computer code for the computation of the effective solid angle and correction factors for gamma spectroscopy-based waste assay

Detection efficiency calibration of gamma spectroscopy for waste assay systems is a difficult and time-consuming task. Commonly, reference waste packages are used for efficiency calibration but these are sometimes difficult to build, are expensive and have limited use since there is large variability of parameters which influence the assay. Numerical calibrations, however, are an interesting alternative and have begun to find more and more application in waste assay. A dedicated computer code, Solidang, has been developed to compute detection efficiencies for gamma waste assay. Solidang uses the effective solid angle approach to derive detection efficiency and aims at improving and facilitating the calibration of gamma waste assay systems and at serving as a tool to investigate the influence of the many system and sample parameters involved.

Summary: Recent progress in meniscal repair technology has included the development of bioabsorbable implants that can be inserted without a posterior incision. Satisfactory success rates have been reported. Reports of complications have been rare. Fusospirochetal superinfection of pre-existing oral lesion in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome

Three patients with AIDS presented with nonbleeding, painful, fetid, oral ulcers overlaid with a grayish-black semiadherent membrane at the sites of a pre-existing lesion. These lesions persisted despite treatment directed toward the primary etiology (cytomegalovirus, Kaposi's sarcoma). Gram- and Giemsa-stained smears of teased membrane fragments revealed an impressive bacterial flora with fusiforms and Borrelia-type spirochetes. Prompt treatment with penicillin brought amelioration of symptoms and sloughing of the overlaying membrane.     

Implications for the present and direction for the future

Numerous angiographic trials have demonstrated that the atherosclerotic process can be modified through reductions in levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Recent research has focused on other potential modalities by which atheroroma development might be inhibited. These newer strategies include reduction of the oxidative potential of LDL particles through modification of dietary fat intake; prevention of LDL oxidation through the use of antioxidants; and inhibition of monocyte and macrophage function by omega-3 fatty acids and leukotriene-1 antagonists. Inhibition of acyl-coenzyme A:cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT) may block intestinal cholesterol absorption and reduce synthesis of very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), while simultaneously enriching high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Modification of cholesterol ester transfer protein may be associated with improved reverse cholesterol transport or enlarged HDL particles. In the future, a wide variety of therapeutic modalities may be available for use alone or in combination to reverse atherosclerosis or prevent its progression.
