Seventeen autistic children were matched for age, race, and sex with 17 nonautistic children, and group differences in social skills were assessed. Appropriate social skills and levels of inappropriate assertiveness/impulsiveness were assessed and evaluated using the Matson Evaluation of Social Skills with Youngsters (MESSY). Significant differences in both the appropriate and inappropriate social behaviors displayed by the two groups were found. The implications of these results are discussed.  相似文献

The performance of 92 patients with unilateral temporal- or frontal-lobe excisions and 35 normal control subjects was tested under two experimental conditions (global, local) of a Stroop-type reaction-time task, employing either hierarchically structured letters or abstract designs as stimuli. In the local condition, subjects were asked to focus their attention on the small forms and to ignore the large form, whereas they were instructed to do the reverse in the global condition. The results showed that, in the local condition, the patients with right temporal-lobe lesions were less affected than the other groups by interference from the global aspect of the stimulus. This reduced sensitivity to the overall configuration of the stimulus was unrelated to the extent of hippocampal removal or to the presence of visual-field defects. These findings support the hypothesis that the human right temporal neocortex contributes to the global processing of visual information.  相似文献

Rats were given subcutaneous or intraperitoneal injections of scopolamine, intraperitoneal injections of atropine, or control injections, and trained on a simple swim-to-platform task. Errors were proportional to dose for both drugs over a wide range. No difference was found in the effects of intraperitoneal or subcutaneous scopolamine but scopolamine was 25 times more potent than atropine. The potency of both drugs in impairing swim-to-platform behavior was similar to their potency in abolishing the cholinergic component of neocortical low voltage fast activity. The electrocortical effect of anticholinergic drugs may be a major factor in the behavioral impairment they produce.  相似文献

The anterior hypothalamus-preoptic area and ventromedial hypothalamus are sexually dimorphic in the reproductively active whiptail lizard Cnemidophorus inornatus. The anterior hypothalamus-preoptic area, which is involved in the control of male-typical copulatory behaviors, is larger in males, whereas the ventromedial hypothalamus, which is involved in the control of female-typical receptivity, is larger in females. In the parthenogenetic whiptail lizard C. uniparens, which is a direct descendant of C. inornatus and exhibits both male-like and female-like pseudosexual behaviors, both brain areas are comparable in size to those of female C. inornatus. This study was conducted to determine whether these brain areas change in size in either species or sex during a time of year when these animals are reproductively inactive, or after removal of the gonads. In male C. inornatus both brain areas changed during reproductive inactivity (either seasonally or surgically induced) and became equivalent to the size characteristic of reproductively active female C. inornatus. When corrected for brain size, the anterior hypothalamus-preoptic area was significantly smaller in intact hibernating and castrated males than in intact males from the summer breeding season. Conversely, the ventromedial hypothalamus was significantly larger in intact hibernating and castrated males than in intact males from the summer breeding season. The two brain areas were not significantly different among the groups of female C. inornatus or parthenogenetic C. uniparens. These results suggest that 1) the brain of whiptail lizards may differentiate seasonally and 2) the female state may be a neutral one to which the male brain reverts during reproductive inactivity.  相似文献

An experiment is described in which deluded subjects with a diagnosis of schizophrenia or of delusional disorder (paranoia) were compared with a nondeluded psychiatric control group and a normal control group on a probabilistic inference task. Factors relevant to belief formation and maintenance were investigated. Deluded subjects requested less information before reaching a decision and were more ready to change their estimates of the likelihood of an event when confronted with potentially disconfirmatory information. No differences were found between the two diagnostic groups of deluded subjects. The results are discussed in light of prevailing theories of the importance of abnormal experience rather than reasoning biases in the formation and maintenance of delusional beliefs. It is suggested that a reasoning abnormality is involved, which may coexist with perceptual abnormalities.  相似文献

The acuity card procedure was used to measure grating acuity in 17 infants with regressed Stage 3 retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) who had no lasting anatomic changes in the retina or optic nerve. Results were compared with those of 28 healthy preterm infants and 28 infants matched by birth weight and gestational age who did not have Stage 3 ROP. Infants in the ROP group showed delayed grating acuity development until 2 years of age. This difference among groups was significant at the 3-5- and 10-12-month test ages but not at the 0-1-, 8-9-, and 16-18-month test ages. Post hoc analyses indicated that the delay in acuity development shown by the ROP group was due to the poor acuity scores of the infants in that group who had central nervous system abnormalities of periventricular leukomalacia or severe (Grade III or IV) intraventricular hemorrhage. When the data of these infants were removed from the analysis, the ROP group showed acuity development similar to that of both the healthy preterm group and the group of infants with matched birth weights and gestational ages who did not have Stage 3 ROP.  相似文献

3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase/Δ5−Δ4isomerase (3β-HSD) activity was measured in primary dissociated cell cultures prepared from telencephalons of developing zebra finches. 3β-HSD activity was confirmed after cultures were incubated with [7-3H]pregneno- lone (Preg) or (1,2,6,7-3H-) dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and3H-progesterone (Prog) and3H-androstenedione (AE) were detected in the medium. Product identity was confirmed by recrystallizations and by HPLC analysis. When DHEA was used as substrate,3H-estradiol and3H-estrone were also detected in the culture medium, presumably derived from the aromatization of3H-AE or3H-T produced from3H-DHEA. To test this idea, cultures were incubated with3H-DHEA together with radioinert AE or with fadrozole HCl, a potent and specific aromatase inhibitor. In the presence of radioinert AE,3H-AE increased but metabolites of3H-AE decreased in the media; in the presence of fadrozole,3H-estrogens decreased but3H-AE and its androgenic metabolite3H-5β-androstanedione increased. These data demonstrate 3β-HSD activity in the songbird brain. The presence of Prog and estradiol in these cultures suggest that Preg and DHEA can potentially serve as substrates for the ultimate formation of active sex steroids in the songbird telencephalon.  相似文献

To test whether newborn babies have voluntary control over their limbs, spontaneous arm-waving movements were measured in the dark while the baby lay supine with its head turned to one side. A narrow beam of light was shone over the baby's nose or chest in such a way that the arm the baby was facing was only visible when the hand encountered the, otherwise, invisible beam of light. The results showed the babies were capable of precisely controlling the position, velocity, and deceleration of their arms so as to keep the hand visible in the light. The findings indicate that newborns can purposely control their arm movements to meet external demands and that the development of visual control of arm movement is underway soon after birth.  相似文献

The paper presents the results of a pilot study which involved 50 nurses from several departments of internal medicine of The State Clinical Hospital of the Collegium Medicum, Jagiellonian University in Cracow. The results are based on the Statement Response Questionnaire. They show that the most common responses of the nurses in the face of anxiety expressed by patients are cheering up the patient, collecting information about the symptom, and offering explanation of the symptom. The least common responses included expressing one's own positive emotions and showing empathy towards the patient.  相似文献

Rabbits, chronically implanted with recording electrodes in the cerebellar interpositus nucleus and following acquisition of a classically conditioned eyelid response, were injected with haloperidol (HAL, 250 micrograms/kg). HAL significantly reduced the number of conditioned responses when a 75 and 85 dB tone conditioned stimulus (CS) was presented but not when a 95 dB tone CS was used. There was a corresponding decrease in interpositus activity at the 75 and 85 dB CS intensities but not at the 95 dB intensity. HAL appeared to disrupt CRs and interpositus activity by increasing the intensity threshold of the tone CS for eliciting conditioned responses. Possible mechanisms for the effect of HAL on neural circuitry involved in classical eyelid conditioning are discussed.  相似文献
