Hepatic angiomyolipoma (AML) is very rare and only about 80 cases have been reported. The tumor is fundamentally heterogeneously composed of the three tissue components of blood vessels, smooth muscle cells (SMC), and fat cells. Two cases of hepatic AML are reported here, both of which are histologically composed predominantly of a fat cell element and resembled true lipoma (lipomatous AML). However, careful examination of both tumors revealed the presence of a small amount of epithelioid SMC, especially around blood vessels. Immunohistochemical study using monoclonal antibody for melanoma (HMB-45) clearly revealed a small amount of HMB-45-positive SMC around the blood vessels and scattered in the diffuse fat cell growth in both tumors. Since no liver tissue components or primary liver tumors are reactive with HMB-45 except AML cells, the presence of HMB-45-positive cells within the tumor clearly established the diagnosis of hepatic AML. Any fatty tumor or focal fatty lesion of the liver that superficially resemble true lipomas should be tested for the presence of HMB-45-positive SMC in the tumor to differentiate it from AML. 相似文献

The effects of high and low dietary fat (20% vs. 0.5% corn oil), and of the prostaglandin synthetase inhibitor indomethacin (0.005% w/w), on tumour incidence, tumour growth, hormone-receptor status and growth-factor expression were examined in dimethylbenzanthracene (DMBA)-induced rat breast cancer. The high dietary-fat group showed a significantly higher tumour incidence, larger tumour size and larger number of bromodeoxyuridine(BrdU)-positive cells of tumours as compared with those in the low dietary-fat group. Indomethacin reduced tumour incidence significantly, but conversely increased the tumour size and the number of BrdU-positive cells in both the high and the low dietary-fat groups. No significant difference was noted in the hormone-receptor status of the tumours. Growth factors (TGF-alpha and IGF-II) were somewhat highly expressed in the high dietary-fat group as compared with the low dietary-fat group, but indomethacin rather reduced the growth-factor expression. It is concluded that high dietary fat stimulates tumour incidence and tumour proliferation, while indomethacin has dual effects: a stimulating effect on tumour proliferation, but an inhibiting effect on tumour incidence. In this article, we describe the usefulness of thyroid needle biopsy in the differential diagnosis of thyroid disorders revealing unusual thyroid function. Firstly, we describe the relationship between thyroid function and its histology in 601 cases of chronic thyroiditis. In the histologic group A, the majority of the cases showed a latent or overt hypothyroidism and in histologic group B, hyperthyroid, euthyroid and latent hypothyroid cases were found in nearly equal frequency, respectively. In histologic group C, most cases were in euthyroid and in histologic group D, most cases showed a hyperthyroidism. In the silent thyroiditis and postpartum thyroiditis, known to show a characteristic clinical and laboratory finding, the histologic features of thyroid gland were as follows: the observed characteristic histologic changes in both diseases were an extensive follicular destruction associated with chronic diffuse thyroiditis. These destructive changes disappeared in association with the clinical and laboratory recovery. In the patients with iodine-excess hypothyroidism, the thyroid glands also revealed characteristic histologic changes. A marked hyperplastic change of follicular cells and a lack of colloid material in the follicular lumen was the predominant histologic feature. Based on our personal experiences, thyroid needle biopsy should be recommended as a useful tool for differentiation of causes of hyper- or hypothyroidism. 相似文献

Seasonal changes in the hypothalamo-pituitary-testes axis of the Japanese wood mice (Apodemus speciosus) were studied. The testes, epididymis, pituitary and hypothalamus were compared between mice in the breeding season (July) and non-breeding season (October) using morphological techniques, and the plasma testosterone level was evaluated by enzyme immunoassay. Significant differences in these tissues were observed between the breeding season and the non-breeding season. Specifically, differences in the non-breeding season included 1) a decline in testicular and epididymal weights, arrest of spermatogenesis and decrease of serum testosterone concentration; 2) a decrease in the number of luteinizing hormone (LH)-, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)-, prolactin (PRL)-, and growth hormone (GH)-immunoreactive cells, and decrease in the size of FSH, PRL, and GH-immunoreactive cells; and 3) an increase in the size of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-immunoreactive neurons. Our findings indicate that the male adult Japanese wood mouse exhibits unique seasonal changes in the hypothalamo-pituitary-testes axis which are not found in laboratory mice. 相似文献

An autopsy case of a 37-year-old man with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy is reported. Ragged-red fibers and crystalline inclusions in mitochondria were revealed by biopsy of the striated muscle of the patient. Mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) was diagnosed clinically. In addition to severe atrophy and degeneration of the generalized striated muscles and many foci of laminar necrosis of the cerebral cortex, the following abnormalities were observed: 1) hypertrophy of the myocardium, 2) fatty change of the liver, 3) focal sclerosis of the glomeruli and dilatation of the tubules of the kidneys, 4) hyalinous degeneration of the Langerhans' islands of the pancreas and 5) wavy change of the smooth muscle fibers of the muscularis propria of the gastrointestinal tract. We suggest that mitochondrial encephalomyopathy affects various organs and tissues, among which susceptibility of the muscular tissues--skeletal muscle, myocardium and smooth muscle--is high. 相似文献

Olive oil is a functional food shown to have a variety of bioactive effects. Therefore, we expect it to be a novel functional food with an exercise-mimetic effect on skeletal muscles. This study aimed to investigate the effect of olive oil on the endurance capacity and muscle metabolism in mice. Mice fed a 7% (w/w) olive oil diet for eight weeks showed improved treadmill running endurance and increased intramuscular triacylglycerol (IMTG) accumulation in the gastrocnemius muscle compared to soybean oil diet-fed controls. The increase in running endurance with olive oil intake was independent of the muscle fiber type. To elucidate underlying the mechanism of elevated IMTG levels, we examined the expression levels of the genes related to lipid metabolism. We found that the expression of diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase1 (DGAT1) was significantly upregulated in the muscle of olive oil diet-fed mice. In addition, the olive oil diet-fed mice showed no metabolic impairment or differences in growth profiles compared to the controls. These results suggest that dietary olive oil intake affects muscle metabolism and muscle endurance by increasing energy accumulation. 相似文献

BackgroundAlthough the clinical outcomes of arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR) have been reported, few studies have focused on diabetic patients. We investigated and compared the clinical results of ARCR in patients with and without diabetes.MethodsThis retrospective study involved 195 consecutive patients who underwent ARCR from 2015 to 2018 in our hospital. Twenty-seven and 168 shoulders were assigned to diabetes and non-diabetes groups, respectively. Diabetic patients with poor control were preoperatively hospitalized for perioperative diabetic control. We evaluated range of motion (ROM), Japanese Orthopaedic Association shoulder (JOA) score, Constant Shoulder Score, and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) score preoperatively and at 6 months and 1 year post-ARCR. Rates of rotator cuff retear 1 year post-ARCR and preoperative and postoperative stiff shoulder were also evaluated. We compared the results between groups and analyzed them statistically. A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant.ResultsPreoperative ROM, JOA score, Constant Shoulder Score and UCLA scores showed significant improvement at post-ARCR in both groups (p < 0.05). On comparing the groups, although preoperative JOA score and Constant Shoulder Score were significantly lower in diabetes group than in non-diabetes group (diabetic/non-diabetic group; 60.0/65.3 for JOA score; p = 0.003, 59.7/64.2 for Constant Shoulder Score; p = 0.003), there was no significant difference postoperatively (6 months post-ARCR; 88.0/89.7 for JOA score; p = 0.783, 88.1/88.6 for Constant Shoulder Score; p = 0.597, 1 year post-ARCR; 96.7/95.4 for JOA score; p = 0.238, 96.6/95.4 for Constant Shoulder Score; p = 0.248). Furthermore, preoperative and postoperative stiff shoulder and retear rates were not significantly different between groups (p = 0.152, p = 0.344, p = 0.347, and p = 0.563, respectively).ConclusionDiabetic patients showed comparable clinical results with non-diabetic patients post-ARCR. Perioperative diabetic control may be recommended for preoperatively uncontrolled diabetic patients. 相似文献
