Relations between handedness and interhemispheric processing in cognitive tasks were examined. Thirty six right-handers and thirty left-handers (familial and nonfamilial left-handers) were asked to add two numbers which were presented tachistoscopically. Two numbers were displayed either to one visual field, or one to the left and one to the right visual field simultaneously. In Experiment 1, the numbers were displayed in Arabic numerals, and in Experiment 2 one of the numbers was displayed in Kanji and one in Arabic numerals. The results of Experiment 1 showed a bilateral advantage, however no subject group difference was shown in the performance of the three (left unilateral, right unilateral, and bilateral) presentation conditions. Though familial left-handers showed a weaker tendency to different patterns than right and non-familial left-handers, the results of Experiment 2 were largely similar to those of Experiment 1. In vitro antifungal activities of naphtoquinone-derivatives, which are constituents of Shikon, roots of Lithospermum erythrorhizon, were investigated against several fungal pathogens. When the biological activity of these compounds was tested against fungi, a wide range of sensitivity was recorded. Shikonin was found to have a stronger than fluconazole against yeast-like fungi: four-fold against Candida krusei (minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC); 4 microg/ml) and two-fold (MIC; 4 microg/ml) against Saccharomyces cerevisiae, though it showed the same potency as fluconazole against C. glabrata. Deoxyshikonin also exhibited four-fold stronger activity against C. krusei (MIC; 4 microg/mi) and three-fold (MIC; 2 microg/ml) stronger against S. cerevisiae. Acetylshikonin and beta-hydroxyisovaleryl shikonin showed lower activities against all fungal pathogens except for C. krusei compared with the standard. Against the filamentous fungus, Trichosporon cutaneum, all naphthoquinones were found to have a range of activity with lower potency than standard. This result provides a rational basis for the clinical use of shikon and shows the possibility of its use in medicinal treatment as an anti-inflammatory agent with antifungal activity. 相似文献

Chondromas of the nasal septum are rare. A case of chondroma originating in the left side of the nasal septum is reported. The patient, a 61-year-old female, presented bilateral nasal obstruction, headache, and nasal bleeding. The tumor was removed surgically through the transpalatal approach under general anesthesia. Objectives
A combination of platinum-based chemotherapy and radiotherapy is the standard treatment for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). However, the efficacy of chemotherapy has reached a plateau. Many autophagy studies suggest that autophagy can either promote or suppress to cancer progression. Thus, a role of autophagy in the acquisition of chemoradioresistance has recently been a notable event. Therefore, we examined the relationship between autophagy and chemotherapy in NPC.Methods
The expression of Beclin 1 and microtubule-associated protein light chain 3 (LC3), a marker of autophagy, was determined by immunohistochemistry in the biopsy samples of patients with NPC before and after the first course of chemotherapy. Additionally, to investigate in the effect of autophagy suppression in chemotherapy, NPC cell line C666-1 cells were treated with cisplatin and/or chloroquine, an inhibitor of autophagy.Results
The expression of Beclin 1 increased after chemotherapy in all patients. In NPC cell line C666-1, compared to cisplatin alone, combination therapy (cisplatin and chloroquine) reduced cell viability, and promoted cell apoptosis.Conclusions
These results suggest that autophagy, represented by Beclin 1, is upregulated after chemotherapy in both in vitro and in vivo NPC studies. Inhibition of autophagy could therefore be new strategy for NPC treatment. 相似文献18.

The repertoire of lymphocyte receptor genes encoded in a germline is further diversified by a number of processes, including the template-independent addition of nucleotides (N regions) by means of terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT). Normally, mouse gammadelta T cells in the early fetal thymus, whose T-cell receptor (TCR) genes lack N regions and are encoded by Vgamma3-Jgamma1 and Vdelta1-Ddelta2-Jdelta2 with canonical junctions (invariant Vgamma3Vdelta1), are thought to be the precursors of dendritic epidermal T cells (DETC). We generated mutant mice whose endogenous TdT promoter was replaced with the lck promoter through homologous recombination. These mutant mice expressed TdT in fetal thymus, had abundant N regions and infrequent canonical junctions in gamma and delta rearrangements, and showed a decreased number of gammadelta T cells. Various Vgamma3Vdelta1 T cells, most of which had N regions in their TCR genes, were found to disseminate in the skin of newborn mutant mice, whereas normal numbers of DETCs with the invariant Vgamma3Vdelta1 rearrangement were observed in adult mutants. These data demonstrate that the regulation of TdT expression during fetal development is important for the generation of gammadelta T cells, and that Vgamma3Vdelta1 T cells, which have various junctional sequences in their TCR genes, randomly disseminate in skin, but invariant Vgamma3Vdelta1 T cells have a great advantage for proliferation in skin. 相似文献
