Abstract: Two cases of moderately retarded adolescents with affective disorders have been treated for nine and five years, respectively. Rapid cycling episodes were seen in early adolescence and a long duration of episodes appeared in late adolescence. Extracranial metastasis of an intracranial anaplastic ganglioglioma through a ventriculoperitoneal shunt is reported. A 53-year-old woman was treated by surgery, radiation and chemotherapy and died 2 years later. At autopsy, multiple metastatic lesions were found in the spinal cord, and the abdominal and pleural cavities. Histologically, all the metastatic lesions were composed of atypical cells which resembled primitive glial elements found in intracranial anaplastic ganglioglioma, suggesting that anaplastic glial elements have a metastatic potential. Extracranial metastasis of ganglioglioma is a rare occurrence; however, the spread of glial elements through the shunt further suggests that caution is required in therapy and indicates a need for protective filters in the shunt system. 相似文献

In a case of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in a 59-year-old female, multifocal degeneration from the cerebral cortex through the visual pathway to the retina was detected clinically, electrophysiologically, and pathologically.Visual evoked cortical potentials (VECPs) showed a peculiar huge negative wave in the early stage but the amplitude reduced gradually. The a- and b-waves of the ERG were detectable in the final stage. Dynamic topography of VECPs revealed a delay of excitation in the visual cortex in the early stage, but a complete defect of the cortical potential and diminished reactivity of the brain stem were apparent in the later stage.Pathological findings were the spongy degeneration of the cerebral cortex, demyelination of the white matter and the optic pathway, and the degeneration of the nerve fiber layer and ganglion cell layer of the retina. 相似文献

To clarify the dopaminergic regulation of neuropeptide Y (NPY) neurons, the effect of haloperidol on NPY in basal ganglia and the cerebral cortex of the rat brain was investigated by sensitive radioimmunoassay and immunocytochemistry using antiserum against rat NPY. After repeated intraperitoneal injections of haloperidol (5 mg/kg) for 6 days, the content of immunoreactive NPY was significantly decreased in the caudate-putamen, but significantly increased in the lateral prefrontal cortex. After treatment for 21 days, the content of immunoreactive NPY in the caudate-putamen remained significantly low, but the extent of change in the lateral prefrontal cortex diminished. In the medial prefrontal cortex, piriform cortex, parietal cortex and nucleus accumbens, no significant changes were found after treatment for either 6 or 21 days. These findings were compatible with those obtained by immunocytochemistry using the same antiserum: an increase of immunoreactive fibers and terminals in the lateral prefrontal cortex and their decrease in the caudate-putamen. However, in the nucleus accumbens the density of immunoreactive fibers and terminals was decreased in the rostral portion, but not in the caudal portion after haloperidol treatment for 6 and 21 days. These findings suggest that dopaminergic afferents region-specifically regulate dopamine-sensitive NPY neurons in the rat brain. 相似文献

We investigated whether changes in myocardial uptake of fatty acid tracer after reperfusion following transient myocardial ischemia were closely related to alterations in intracellular fatty acid oxidation. METHODS: Using a fatty acid tracer of (131)I- and (125)I-labeled 15-(p-iodophenyl)-9-methylpentadecanoic acid (9MPA), the myocardial uptake and metabolites were determined by dual-tracer autoradiography and thin-layer chromatography in rats 3 or 14 d after reperfusion following 5 or 15 min of ischemia induced by coronary artery ligation. RESULTS: 9MPA metabolites processed via beta-oxidation were lower in the ischemic region (IR) than in non-IR 3 d after 5 min of ischemia, despite no reduction of tracer uptake in IR. Oxidation of 9MPA was recovered 14 d after 15 min of ischemia in association with normalization of tracer uptake in IR, whereas both uptake and oxidation of 9MPA were markedly impaired 3 d after 15 min of ischemia, accompanied by slow clearance of myocardial tracer. CONCLUSION: Normal uptake of fatty acid tracer early after reperfusion does not always imply preserved intracellular fatty acid oxidation.
