Optically stimulated luminescence in forensics

Tracking the former location of a radioactive source represents an attractive attribute in today's society, where the threat of a radiological dispersal device (RDD) is considered high. Development of a novel, retrospective detection technique based on optically stimulated luminescence is underway. This will allow confirmation of the former location of a radioactive source. Materials near the source's former location may be probed for information on accumulated dose by taking advantage of radiation-induced charge trapping that occurs in many common materials. The prototype detector design and analysis techniques are described.     

Skeletal maturation of Indian children

Summary The skeletal maturation of 486 children from birth to 6 years of age has been assessed by studying the radiographs of both the hands and the wrists. It was observed that the skeletal development was more advanced in girls than in boys. There was no difference in the sequence of appearance of ossification centres as compared to that given by other workers. The skeletal maturation of the children in our series was delayed by 1–2 years as compared with studies on African and Chicago children. Disorders of micturition: neuropharmacologic basis and results of drug therapy.

The clinical use of various pharmacologic agents in problems of micturition is based on the new concepts of intrinsic urethrovesical innervation, presence and regional predominance of autonomic neuroreceptors, and experimental evidence of the effects of various drugs on the bladder and the urethra. A new concept, relating to the processes that control bladder filling and emptying, is coming into being and replacing the traditional concept based on anatomic grounds alone. On the basis of the published data, and from personal experience both experimental and clinical, pharmacologic agents singly or in combination can be effectively and safely used in various problems of micturition such as incontinence (enuresis, stress incontinence in women, postprostatectomy, urgency incontinence), and functional outflow obstruction caused by neurologic or non-neurologic disease processes.
