Detailed Diurnal Rhythm of Sensitivity to Melatonin Injections in Turkish Hamsters, Mesocricetus brandti

A diurnal rhythm of sensitivity to exogenous melatonin was defined in adult male Turkish hamsters, Mesocricetus brandti. Melatonin was administered daily by subcutaneous injections (15 micrograms in 0.1 ml 10% ethanolic saline) for 10 weeks in animals exposed to 16 L:8 D. As in golden and Djungarian hamsters, two periods of melatonin sensitivity were identified. The first, in late afternoon, persisted for 6 hr, from 7 hr to 1 hr before lights off. The second period was briefer, of only 2 hr duration in the late night, terminating at the time of lights on. Melatonin injections given during these sensitive periods promoted testicular regression in most animals; melatonin administered at other times of the day was without effect on testicular function in most animals of these groups. Gonadal regression induced by properly timed melatonin injections was rapid, in many groups nearly complete in 6 to 7 weeks. The results are discussed in relation to the function of pineal melatonin in photoperiodic time measurement in hamsters.     

An Unusual Form of Skin Tuberculosis Following B.C.G. Vaccination

A 25-year-old female has had brown to erythematous telangiectatic patches and grouped papules on her face, neck, arm, and trunk since childhood following B.C.G. vaccination. Histopathologically, the lesions consisted of hyperkeratosis, slight acanthosis, tuberculoid granulomas with some Langerhans type giant cells in the mid-dermis. Although various forms of cutaneous tuberculosis after B.C.G. vaccination have been reported, it was difficult for us to assign the patient's skin lesion to any specific disease entity. Remission of her cutaneous lesions occurred clinically and histopathologically after treatment with isoniazid and rifampin.     

鸡矢藤提取物对小白鼠离体子宫的作用

鸡矢藤[Paederia Scandens]提取物0.32mg 加入营养槽内,对小白鼠各期离体子宫的收缩张力、收缩强度、收缩频率以及子宫活动力均有增强作用。与给药前比较,诱导期组分别增加85%、47%、21%和72%;动情期组分别增加70%、77%、41%和41%;非动情组分别增加47%、76%、62%和66%,而且三组间作用无显著性差异。本品还能增强 PGE_2对小白鼠离体子宫的收缩张力、收缩强度、收缩频率以及子宫活动力。与 PGE_2的作用比较,分别增加34%、39%、9%和45%,但收缩频率增加无统计学意义(P>0.05)。上述结果表明,鸡矢藤提取物对小鼠子宫有显著性兴奋作用,而且还能增强PGE_2对小鼠子宫兴奋作用,其机制尚待进一步研究。     

A case of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in a patient with Crohn's disease]

Although adenocarcinoma is a well known complication of chronic inflammatory bowel disease, primary gastrointestinal lymphoma occurring in Crohn's disease is rare. A 40-year-old man with 10 year-history of Crohn's disease had multiple longitudinal ulcerative lesions on descending colon in follow-up colonoscopic examination. Microscopic examination of proximal descending colon revealed peripheral T cell lymphoma and other site of the descending colon was consistent with Crohn's disease. The patient reached complete remission of malignant lymphoma after three cycles of combined chemotherapy. He has been well for 10 months with sulfasalazine maintenance therapy but was admitted to the hospital due to spontaneous bowel perforation of ascending colon. Right hemicolectomy was done, but the patient died of post-surgical recurrent mesenteric abscess and sepsis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma complicating Crohn's disease in Korea which was confirmed by immunohistochemical studies.     

The study of diethylstilbestrol toxic effect in the mouse sertoli cell line by comparison of miRNA and mRNA expression

It is important to acknowledge the harmful effects of environmental chemicals in human’s lives. The toxic effects of Diethylstilbestrol (DES), one of the endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), have been documented in many studies. As expected, DES affect male gendal hormone as well as female’s; therefore, epigenetic study should be considered. In this study, microarray technology was used to study harmful effects on the level of genomics, and here, two types of microarray chips- the Agilent mouse genome 4 × 44 K array for gene expression profiling and the Agilent mouse miRNA v13 for miRNA expression profiling-was used to study the relation between gene and miRNA expression profiles. As a result, we identified 4 miRNAs (miR 203, 350, 421, and 466i) that were similarly expressed at 3 hrs and 24 hrs of DES treat times. Twenty one genes matched between predicted target for 4 miRNAs and 118 genes expressed similarly. These genes have functions related to cell differentiation and cell cycle. Therefore, DES affects cellular function and induces toxicity in TM4 cells. In future studies, it is necessary to find more related functions and mechanisms of DES in the system.
