We used in vitro DNA amplification by the polymerase chain reaction and nonradioactive probes for prenatal diagnosis of beta thalassemia in Chinese from the Guangdong province. Exact molecular diagnoses were made in all 20 fetuses studied over a 6-month period. We conclude that this method of prenatal diagnosis for beta thalassemia is a viable approach in many parts of the world where this disease is common. 相似文献

Due to the long half-life of 137Cs (t1/2 ∼ 30 years), the selective extraction of cesium (Cs) from high level liquid waste is of paramount importance in the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle to avoid long term surveillance of high radiotoxic waste. As 1,3-di-octyloxycalix[4]arene-crown-6 (CC6) is suggested to be a promising candidate for selective Cs extraction, the improvement in the Cs extraction efficiency by CC6 has been investigated through the optimization of the effect of dielectric media on the extraction process. The effects of the feed acid (HNO3, HCl, and HClO4) and the composition of the diluents for the ligand in the organic phase on the extraction efficiency of Cs have been investigated systematically. In 100% n-octanol medium, Cs is found to form a 1 : 1 ion-pair complex with CC6 (0.03 M) providing a very high distribution ratio of DCs ∼ 22, suggesting n-octanol as the most suitable diluent for Cs extraction. No significant interference of other relevant cations such as Na, Mg and Sr was observed on the DCs value in the optimized solvent system. Density functional theory (DFT) based calculations have been carried out to elucidate the reason of ionic selectivity and enhanced Cs extraction efficiency of CC6 in the studied diluent systems. In addition to the ionic size-based selectivity of the crown-6 cavity, the polarity of the organic solvent system, the hydration energy of the ion, and the relative reorganization of CC6 upon complexation with Cs are understood to have roles in achieving the enhanced efficiency for the extraction of Cs by the CC6 extractant in nitrobenzene medium.Separation scheme was developed for selective extraction of long-lived fission product 137Cs using substituted calix crown 6 ether from aqueous acidic solution. 相似文献

Basal cell proliferation is a common finding in a benign hyperplastic prostate gland. Occasionally, basal cell hyperplasia is so florid that it can be mistaken for prostatic adenocarcinoma. We characterized histological, ultrastructural, and immunohistochemical features of florid basal cell hyperplasia from transurethral resections (n = 11) and prostatectomy specimens (n = 4). Fifteen cases of prostatic adenocarcinoma were used as comparison. Intraluminal calcification was present in 40% of florid basal cell hyperplasia cases (6 of 15) and a unique finding of intracytoplasmic hyaline globules was detected in 53.3% of florid basal cell hyperplasia cases (8 of 15). Ultrastructural analysis revealed luminal calcification and intracytoplasmic electron-dense globules in foci of basal cell hyperplasia. Crystalloids, a frequent finding in low-grade prostate cancer, were absent in all 15 cases of florid basal cell hyperplasia. By immunohistochemistry, the basal cell-specific 34betaE12 and p63 as well as glutathione-s-transferase pi were positive in all basal cell hyperplasia cases but negative in all prostatic adenocarcinomas. These distinguishing features of florid basal cell hyperplasia are helpful in differential diagnosis from prostatic adenocarcinoma. Cytokeratins 8 and 18 were both positive in basal cells, benign secretory cells, and carcinoma cells, failing to be of discrimatory value. Immunostaining for alpha-methylacyl-coenzyme racemase, a new prostate cancer marker, was negative in hyperplastic basal cells but detected a distinct minor benign cell population in basal cell hyperplasia of possible neuroendocrine origin. 相似文献

The ACR Dose Index Registry (DIR) provides a new source of clinical radiation exposure data that has not been used previously to establish or update the relative radiation level (RRL) values in the ACR Appropriateness Criteria (AC). The results of a recent review of DIR data for 10 common CT examinations were compared with current ACR AC RRL values for the same procedures. The AC RRL values were previously determined by consensus of members of the AC Radiation Exposure Subcommittee based on reference radiation dose values from the literature (when available) and anecdotal information from individual members’ clinical practices and experiences. For 7 of the 10 examination types reviewed, DIR data agreed with existing RRL values. For 3 of 10 examination types, DIR data reflected lower dose values than currently rated in the AC. The Radiation Exposure Subcommittee will revise these RRL assignments in a forthcoming update to the AC (in October 2018) and will continue to monitor the DIR and associated reviews and analyses to refine RRL assignments for additional examination types. Given recent attention and efforts to reduce radiation exposure in CT and other imaging modalities, it is likely that other examination types will require revision of RRL assignments once information from the DIR database is considered. 相似文献

Heme/porphyrin-based electrocatalysts (both synthetic and natural) have been known to catalyze electrochemical O2, H+, and CO2 reduction for more than five decades. So far, no direct spectroscopic investigations of intermediates formed on the electrodes during these processes have been reported; and this has limited detailed understanding of the mechanism of these catalysts, which is key to their development. Rotating disk electrochemistry coupled to resonance Raman spectroscopy is reported for iron porphyrin electrocatalysts that reduce O2 in buffered aqueous solutions. Unlike conventional single-turnover intermediate trapping experiments, these experiments probe the system while it is under steady state. A combination of oxidation and spin-state marker bands and metal ligand vibrations (identified using isotopically enriched substrates) allow in situ identification of O2-derived intermediates formed on the electrode surface. This approach, combining dynamic electrochemistry with resonance Raman spectroscopy, may be routinely used to investigate a plethora of metalloporphyrin complexes and heme enzymes used as electrocatalysts for small-molecule activation. 相似文献

While most women with epilepsy can expect a normal pregnancy outcome, epilepsy remains a significant contributor to both maternal and perinatal morbidity. Pre-pregnancy planning must address reliable contraception and optimisation of antiepileptic drug (AED) regimens to minimise teratogenic risk while maintaining seizure control. The most recent data from the AED registries regarding malformations is presented in this review, as is the limited data on the newer AEDs and studies linking neurocognitive outcomes to AED exposure.
