Process and Outcome of Rehabilitation of Homeless Veterans and Their Relationship with Personality Style

Abstract

Treatment process and outcome data for 225 consecutive admissions to a rehabilitation program for the homeless were reviewed. The Northeast Program Evaluation Center's criteria were employed to evaluate participation and outcome (e.g., general, employment, and housing) for participants. Significant relationships were found between predominant personality features and degree of participation in program and living arrangements at discharge.     

Measuring health outcomes of adolescents: report from a pilot study

There is a need to understand the practicality, validity and reliability of using utility measures with children and adolescents. We designed a pilot study in order to help guide the selection of an appropriate health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL) questionnaire for adolescents to be used in the context of a large randomised controlled trial (RCT) of family therapy versus standard treatment for adolescents aged 11–17 years. The pilot study was carried out on a school sample of adolescents in the same age range as the RCT. Adolescents were asked to fill in three HRQoL questionnaires: the standard EQ-5D, the licensed Health Utilities Index HUI, and the child-friendly version of the standard EQ-5D: the EQ-5D for youth (EQ-5D-Y). This report explores the problems with the language and concepts embodied within those HRQoL questionnaires and open discussion regarding how we can value the health of adolescents for cost-utility analysis in a larger study.     

An Adolescent Boy with Urticaria to Water: Review of Current Treatments for Aquagenic Urticaria

Abstract: We report the case of an adolescent boy with aquagenic urticaria unresponsive to oral antihistamine therapy. We successfully treated his condition by topical application of a petrolatum‐containing cream as a protective coating. To our knowledge, this is the first report showing the use of topical therapy alone to treat aquagenic urticaria in a child. Based on the effectiveness, safety profile, and ease of use, clinicians may wish to consider this regimen as a first‐line therapy.     

Early cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita masquerading as ulcerated retiform purpura: a diagnostic trap

Cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita (CMTC) is a rare congenital cutaneous vascular anomaly with a reticular marbled erythematous pattern, which can result in isolated benign skin lesions or less commonly be associated with systemic anomalies. Occasionally, the characteristic pattern of CMTC lesions is masked on initial presentation, creating a diagnostic conundrum that can result in unnecessary workups to rule out vasculopathy. We present the case of a female newborn with a red-blue ulcerated skin lesion on the right leg and foot, which initially appeared as retiform purpura but evolved to exhibit the mottled pattern of CMTC by 5 days of age. Clinicians must be made aware of this potential diagnostic trap in early CMTC to avoid invasive skin biopsies and unnecessary laboratory testing in neonates.
