Obesity is associated with health consequences, and thyroid dysfunction may be an adaption to the increased energy expenditure in obesity. With the rising prevalence of obesity in childhood, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome may also increase. In the current study, we have shown gender differences in the association of thyroid hormones with obesity, and attempted to elucidate the relationship between thyroid hormones and anthropometric parameters and biochemical data in obese Japanese children. We analyzed anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, body composition, thyroid hormones, and lipid profiles in 283 obese children. The association between thyroid hormones and several parameters differed by gender. The free T3 to free T4 ratio (fT3/fT4) in boys was negatively associated with the quantitative insulin sensitivity check index, whereas in girls, thyroid-stimulating hormone levels were positively correlated with levels of glucose, diastolic blood pressure, and non-high density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and fT3/fT4 was positively correlated with uric acid levels. FT3/fT4 in boys with metabolic syndrome was relatively higher than in those without metabolic syndrome. The cause of gender differences is unknown. Therefore, further studies with larger sample sizes and a long-term follow-up period are needed to address the influence of thyroid hormones on various parameters. 相似文献

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to find whether a fast treadmill gait training
speed is effective for the gait training of stroke patients in the early rehabilitation
stage. [Subjects and Methods] Thirty-nine stroke patients were the subjects of our
investigation. They walked on a treadmill with handrail supports at a fast speed (130% of
their comfortable gait speed in the 2nd week). The treadmill gaits of the patients were
recorded using a 3-dimensional analysis system at two and six weeks after their
admissions. Intraclass Correlation Coefficients (ICC) of the temporal and spatial
parameters of the two periods were statistically analyzed. [Results] For all of the
patients, the ICCs of the measured parameters were greater than 0.58. In the case of
patients whose gait speeds of the two periods were close, the ICC units were greater than
0.7. [Conclusion] The fast gait speed training allowed us to expose the patients to a gait
speed that they were expected to acquire at a later stage of their rehabilitation. This

Summary Water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) insulin micelles were prepared, and the possibility of insulin absorption in a micellar form
was examined. In this preparation, insulin was trapped in oil droplets of oleic acid in glyceryl-α-monooleate. (1) W/O/W insulin
micelles were absorbed from the ligated jejunal loop of rabbits to the order of 12.3 to 58.5% of the dose given (10 U/kg body
weight) during the 3-h experimental period. (2) Alloxan diabetic rats were treated with intrajejunal administration of W/O/W
insulin micelles at a dosage of either 25 or 50 U/100 g body weight, three times daily for as longs as 14 days. During treatment,
a significant reduction in the daily excretion of urinary glucose was observed, concomitant with a decrease in fasting blood
glucose. Quantitative estimates suggested that the effectiveness of 25 U/100 g of intrajejunal W/O/W insulin micelles was
comparable to that of regular insulin at a dosage of 1 U/100 g i.m. These results would indicate that W/O/W insulin micelles,
when given enterally, are more effective in lowering blood and urinary glucose levels than W/O/W insulin emulsions in which

Sperm of the Pacific herring, Clupea pallasi, are unique in that they are immotile upon spawning in the environment. Herring sperm have evolved to remain motionless for up to several days after spawning, yet are still capable of fertilizing eggs. An egg chorion ligand termed "sperm motility initiation factor" (SMIF) induces motility in herring sperm and is required for fertilization. In this study, we show that SMIF induces calcium influx, sodium efflux, and a membrane depolarization in herring sperm. Sperm motility initiation by SMIF depended on decreased extracellular sodium (<350 mM) and could be induced in the absence of SMIF in very low sodium seawater. Motility initiation depended on > or =1 mM extracellular calcium. Calcium influx caused by SMIF involved both the opening of voltage-gated calcium channels and reverse sodium-calcium (Na(+)/Ca(2+)) exchange. Membrane depolarization was slightly inhibited by a calcium channel blocker and markedly inhibited by a Na(+)/Ca(2+) exchange inhibitor. Sodium efflux caused by SMIF-initiated motility was observed when using both extracellular and intracellular sodium probes. A Na(+)/Ca(2+) exchange antigen was shown to be present on the surface of the sperm, primarily over the midpiece, by using an antibody to the canine Na(+)/Ca(2+) exchanger. This antibody recognized a 120-kDa protein that comigrated with the canine myocyte Na(+)/Ca(2+) exchanger. Sperm of Pacific herring are now shown to use reverse Na(+)/Ca(2+) exchange in motility initiation. This mechanism of regulation of motility initiation may have evolved for both maintenance of immotility after spawning as well as ligand-induced motility initiation. 相似文献
